A new patch for Way of the Hunter is now available on all platforms. For quite some time, herd genetics weren’t behaving the way they should, even careful management didn’t really pay off. That’s been sorted out in today’s patch. Herd genetics should now respond properly to your management again, and habitats should be working as intended.
We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this caused. We know this issue has been frustrating, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to report it and stick with us.
Fixed: Fitness potential and herd genetics not responding correctly to player management
We are aware that a few additional issues still need attention. We are currently planning one more patch for Way of the Hunter, addressing bugs reported by the community. If you run into any issues, the single best place to report them is the THQ Nordic Redmine - thanks!

Hello Hunters,
As many of you know, Way of the Hunter 2 recently entered Early Access. It’s been quite a ride so far — as with any game launch, there were a few hiccups along the way — but overall the response from you, the players, has been incredibly positive and motivating for the entire team. Thank you for that. It truly means a lot to us.
Over the past couple of months, our focus has been almost entirely on getting the sequel ready and supporting it through its Early Access launch. That said, we want to reassure you that we have not forgotten about the first game or the community that helped it grow into what it is today.
You may have noticed a small update downloading for Way of the Hunter. This was only a minor asset change in the main menu to update the Way of the Hunter 2 banner window with the current information. Even though we have been very busy lately, rest assured that we have also been monitoring issues in the first game.
Several players have encountered bugs that we still plan to revisit and continue investigating. This includes the so-called “fitness bug,” which we are fully aware of and have been tracking internally. While we cannot yet provide a clear timeline for when this issue will be resolved, it remains on our list of priorities that we intend to address first.
If you run into an issue in Way of the Hunter and haven’t reported it yet, please do so via the THQ Nordic Redmine, to help us track and investigate the problem. Also, if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Way of the Hunter 2 in Early Access. There’s currently a launch sale, which makes this a great opportunity to jump in at a lower price, experience the game as it evolves, and have a real say in shaping its future updates and features.

We’ve been quiet for a while, focused on the development of Way of the Hunter 2. Now, we’re ready to invite you in. Before we start talking about the new hunting game in detail, we want to build it together with player feedback at the core. That’s why we’re opening applications for a closed beta gameplay test - a small, focused test with players from our community who care about hunting games and thoughtful feedback.
This is not a marketing demo. It’s a work-in-progress development build, and your feedback will directly help shape what comes next.

The test will run for a limited time, with free play during the test period and direct feedback channels to the team.
The closed beta is PC (Steam) only.
A Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is required, which is why all participants need to be 18+.

THQ Nordic and Nine Rocks Games are excited to announce Elkcrest Island, the fifth and final map DLC for Way of the Hunter, and for the first time ever, it is completely free. Serving as a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated players and community who have supported the game over the past 3.5 years, Elkcrest Island marks a celebratory close to the Way of the Hunter journey before the studio turns its full focus to the next title in the franchise. Update 1.31 is now live, and it brings Elkcrest Island, a remote northern wilderness, rich with North America's most iconic game species. This isolated, sparsely populated landscape also debuts a new predator in the franchise: the North American cougar! And the most requested animal is making a comeback: Merriam’s wild turkey.
Players can explore dramatic hills and mountain ranges to scout major big game, from moose and elk to Bighorn sheep, caribou, Sitka deer, Wood bison, and the imposing Kodiak bear. Those seeking variety can head to serene lakes and open plains, home to wild ducks, surf scoters, pheasants, and lesser scaup. Alongside the free DLC map Elkcrest Island, update 1.31 is now live on all platforms. The game will identify weaker animals in affected habitats and increase their fitness by 50% toward the habitat’s gene-pool maximum, which means a small boost to those, who have lost their herd management progress. As part of this process, the game will automatically trigger a new in-game year the first time you load in after the update, but only for those affected saves.
Additional improvements:
Some herd management stats that previously failed to load correctly should self-correct over the next two in-game years.

Hi hunters,
After Update 1.29.1 went live, many of you reported issues that needed our immediate attention. Some players experienced certain herds losing their genetic potential after loading a save, with a few habitats affected more heavily than others. For those impacted — we’re genuinely sorry.
The addition of turkeys in 1.29.1 unexpectedly put pressure on parts of the herd-management logic, which caused some herds to break and trigger resets. That one’s on us, and we’re truly sorry for the frustration it caused. Over the past two days, we’ve been digging into the issue, and the hotfix for Update 1.29.1 is now available on PC.
Corrects the English name for Merriam’s turkey (other localizations will be fixed in an upcoming update).
Resolves an issue where Mule deer near the lodge could spawn in unusually high numbers.
Stops the herd-genetics reset from happening going forward.
Protects save files for anyone who had not loaded the game after Update 1.29.1. If you backed up your save or hadn’t launched the game yet, your herds should remain intact.
We want you to know that we’re still actively investigating the issue. Today’s hotfix focuses on preventing any further progression loss while we continue looking into the issue.
Fixed: An issue where certain herds would lose their genetic potential after loading a game.
Fixed: Mule deer near the lodge spawning in unusually large herd sizes.
Fixed: The turkey’s subspecies incorrect name in English localization (more localizations are on the way).

Turkey season is here! Maybe you’re already thinking about Thanksgiving - the stuffing, the pies, the turkey. But before you ruffle its feathers, the long-requested turkey has officially arrived in Way of the Hunter, free for all players. Right now, they might be easy to catch (after all, we want everyone to have a turkey on their plate for Thanksgiving dinner!), but rest assured, they will be harder to hunt after the holidays.
Update 1.29.1 is now available on all platforms, bringing a small focused patch, adding turkeys to Nez Perce Valley & Matariki Park. Find their need zones to unlock more details in the in-game encyclopedia.

This patch adds a handful of cosmetic touches to capture the Halloween spirit and set the right eerie mood for your hunts. You’ll find pumpkins decorating lodges and cabins across Nez Perce Valley and Transylvania, and glowing animal eyes lighting up the night on all maps after sunset.

A new brand will be coming to Way of the Hunter soon. Their mascot is already roaming some of our mountain regions. Any guesses?
With the help of our friends Matthias Schultner, and Amelie Eichinger-Noll, we headed into the Austrian wilderness to record the Bergara B-14 Wilderness HMR for Way of the Hunter. We spent the day capturing both video and sound—bringing the rifle’s real voice into the game.
Authenticity is at the heart of Way of the Hunter, and working with trusted hunting brands like Bergara helps us honor the traditions and respect for nature that inspire the game.
Hotfix Patch 1.28.1 is now live on all platforms, fixing pedicles on Common eland so they properly scale with horn size and correcting the in-game encyclopedia entry to display the right score range.

The Common eland has arrived in Tikamoon Plains – a true giant among antelopes and a worthy challenge for any hunter. Strong, resilient, and majestic, the eland will put your tracking and shooting skills to the test. This update also brings a range of gameplay improvements and refinements. Aiming now feels smoother thanks to reduced blur on iron sights, and the zeroing for the Prairie Hunter the Jack iron sight has been adjusted to 50 meters for more accurate shots. We’ve also refreshed the audio experience with updated sound effects for the Steyr-Gams rifle and several rifles from the Hunter’s Advantage Pack.
Update 1.28.1 also brings important fixes inspired by your reports. The electronic caller delay has been resolved, its UI now updates correctly, and the hunter sense dot alignment on the Prairie Hunter the Jack has been corrected. We’ve also smoothed out some localization issues and minor environmental glitches, like the levitating grass on Nez Perce Valley. For more details, please check the patch notes below.

Update 1.28 is now live on all platforms, bringing the Hunter’s Advantage Pack! Expand your arsenal with three specialized rifles and a versatile electronic caller - crafted to handle every hunting scenario. From small game to apex predators and the toughest big game, this pack equips you with the precision, power, and adaptability to always stay ahead in the hunt.
The Hunter’s Advantage Pack DLC for Way of the Hunter includes the Antoillier Universal Electronic Caller, the bolt-action Vanhoutte Hawk Long Range, the lever-action Prairie Hunter the Jack, as well as the double-barreled Mordecai Doublejab, and is out now. The pack is part of Update 1.28 and is sold separately from the base game at an SRP of €4.99 / $4.99. The base game is required to play the DLC. Known for their commitment to precision, clarity, and craftsmanship, this proud optics brand is now officially a part of the in-game gear lineup, with their iX6 3-18x44 scope available free for all players. Designed for mid-to-long range shooting and low-light conditions, this premium scope delivers next-level accuracy for those who demand precision in every shot.
While this may be a more focused update, it brings meaningful improvements that enhance how you see and play. Alongside the addition of the Integrix scope, the headlamp has been upgraded with doubled range, offering better visibility during nighttime hunts. A visual issue with grass pop-in has also been resolved to maintain immersion across natural environments.
