WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes news & patch notes

Hey everyone, Thank you for all the feedback you’ve been sharing with us since the release of WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes. We’d like to use this opportunity to let you know what the next steps are and at the same time answer some of the most frequent questions that arose on Steam after WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes launched. On August 23, 2023 WARSAW was updated to WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes and became available on Steam as a free game featuring:

• New playable hero
• Two new enemy units
• New storyline, complete with animated and voiced cutscenes
• New, fully voiced Polish narrator (with complete subtitles)
• New soundtrack
• New location type to interact with on the map
• Tons of new entries for the codex including photos, posters and newspapers

Alongside there have been two beta branches with older versions of the game available to all the players. That beta has run its course and will close in 30 days. On April 5th, 2024, we will retire all the beta branches from WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes. Players who had the game in their library before August 23, 2023, will receive an update that adds a special launcher. This launcher will allow you to choose which version of the game you want to play - WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes or the older version of the game (with improved controller support, optimization, balance updates, bug fixes, and other quality-of-life changes). Those of you who did not purchase the previous version of the game and did not have it in their library prior to the WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes launch will retain access to that version only. Q: Why did you remove a strategic element from the game, making the gameplay too linear? A: The removal of the “momentum” system was required to follow for historical accuracy - this means that Rising cannot falter based on the player’s choices that are not true to the historical facts. Currently the linear mission progression requires the player to undertake a mix of both the actual missions that happened in real life, as well as a degree of random missions to make each gameplay that much different but it does not affect the historical milestones of the actual Rising. The second thing altered was the omission of three missions to choose from - what now remains is a random mission that propels the story forward in linear fashion, although the random missions are still chosen from a pool of available ones. WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes remains a tactical turn-based RPG with a wide roster of playable characters with their own unique skills, that tells the story of Warsaw Rising - now presented in more accurate chronological order. When playing the game you will experience:

• Tactical turn-based gameplay with rpg elements and resource management
• Extensive roster of characters with their own unique skills
• Collection of weapons that players can find on different missions
• Numerous enemies and enemy vehicles with their own sets of skills and strategies
• The events of the Warsaw Rising accompanied by historical characters, places and documents

Q: Game became a visual novel now. A: WARSAW RISING’S gameplay remains the same as in the older version and now players also have the opportunity to learn more about the events, people, and places of the Warsaw Rising. WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes is a turn-based rpg that has an extensive, tactical combat system where players can develop their characters that have their own playstyle, weapons and story. It portrays the events of the 1944 Warsaw Rising, one of the most tragic chapters in the city’s long history. Q: Game is not historically accurate. A: We partnered with Institute of Polish Remembrance to expand on the historical aspect of the game, to enrich WARSAW RISING with the addition of authentic events, characters, missions, cutscenes and Warsaw Rising day by day diary. Warsaw Rising Museum and Institute of Polish Remembrance supplied us with the materials that contributed to the historical accuracy of the game - photos of people and places, notes, and newspaper clippings. Q: I lost access to the game that I paid for. How do I get it back? A: Access to the older version of the game was never removed - it required you to access the beta branch to play it. Starting from April 5th 2024 we will introduce a launcher that allows owners of the older version of the game to choose which version they want to play. We greatly appreciate your support, comments and feedback for WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes. UPDATE: We decided to postpone the beta branch deactivation by two weeks into the second half of April.

We are releasing the first hotfix for WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes:

• fixed issue where "Parasol" Soldier's skill, "A Risky Gambit", caused the game to soft-lock during combat upon usage.

Hey everyone, Yesterday’s launch of the new Free version of WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes was a technically challenging affair. Switching the game live, from one version to another, with a major overhaul of the features and content, Steam page assets, the name of the game and the price tag was not without its challenges and we had all hands on board for this. It was never our intention to remove the access to the original version of the game. Unfortunately due to the technical challenges outlined above we ran out of time yesterday and didn’t make it available for the launch of WARSAW RISING. Sorry! As a result we’ve prepared a Legacy Version branch where everyone can access WARSAW as it was before August 23rd and experience the original version of the game. In order to access the Legacy Branch of the game please select WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes in your Steam Library, right click on the title, select “Properties” and then “BETAS” tab. Choose “Legacy Version” which should automatically update to the version of the game from before August 23rd. Moreover, we will continue to iron out the bugs and hotfix both the WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes version of the game, as well as the Legacy Version. Our aim is to introduce the existing Bootcamp Branch changes (controller support, patches, etc) into the Legacy Version after extensive testing in the near future. We want to make sure that you can enjoy both WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes and have a chance to come back to the Legacy Version, if you feel like it. WARSAW RISING focuses more on the historical accuracy when compared to the 2019 original. It was important to get the events, places and people right. For this to work, we had to adjust the strategic layer of the game. We achieved this by removing the "momentum" system and the random mission generation, because they allowed for unpredictable and unhistorical progress of the uprising (ie. Śródmieście falling in the opening days of the struggle). The game now follows a more linear but also a more authentic timeline. The rest of the strategic layer, however, remains intact. Random calendar events, hero recruitment, inventory, character progression, hospital are all still in the game. In addition to historical missions, the game will present you with randomly generated ones, similar to the 2019 original. Five years ago WARSAW launched. A game focusing on a history of the city and it’s history that is not as widely recognised as we felt it needs to. WARSAW reached hundreds of thousands of players on different platforms and was included in the Polish history books, was recognised by German Digital Culture Foundation as a valuable educational tool to teach about World War II and received a lot of attention from both the players and gaming media from more than 40 countries that covered both the game and the theme of Warsaw Rising. We always felt the story of WARSAW deserves to be shared with many more players and we partnered with Institute of Polish Remembrance (IPN) to expand on the historical aspect of the game, to enrich WARSAW with new historical events, characters, missions, cutscenes and Warsaw Rising day by day diary with support both from IPN and Warsaw Rising Museum. The end goal is to make sure the game can be a learning tool for students of Polish history both locally and abroad. The new version of the game removes the strategic layer that we felt did not support the more narrative driven elements of the game, as well as adds new enemy characters, a new playable Hero and a Polish native narrator on top of numerous other text based additions and factual revisions. All these changes deserve a new title of the game and we present to you WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes, that the game will from today be called. But what’s most important is from today, WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes becomes a Free game. Available for everyone to download, enjoy and experience the Warsaw Rising as they never have before. This wouldn’t be possible without IPN’s support as WARSAW RISING: City of Heroes officially becomes a title joining other historical games – Cyphers Game and Szybowcowa 82 to allow players to learn about Polish history. Hey everyone, For the past year or so we have been approaching WARSAW with ideas on how we can deliver on expanding the game in significant ways. We always felt that the deep and engaging gameplay, numerous colourful heroes to choose from and adherence to realities that Warsaw inhabitants faced during the tragic months of 1944 were strong basis, but wanted to be able to build upon them. Hello everyone! Welcome to another Development Update on the changes we are implementing for Warsaw: Homecoming. Before we begin, please consider joining our official Discord channel, which has a shiny brand-new section dedicated to Warsaw. If you feel an urge to discuss (or contest!) any of the following design choices directly with us devs, then you can do so there. Now, today we're going to be taking an in-depth look at some of the changes planned for our battle system. As we have previously discussed last month the plan is to significantly up the tempo, remove the awkward pauses, increase lethality, and streamline some of the mechanics. Let's see how we're proposing to do that: Changes TL:DR;

• New lane system with a single, long lane
• New cover system (with heavy and light variants)
• New activation system with individual action points
• New range system
• Streamlined ammunition
• Revamped UI

So, firstly, we are removing the two lane (4x2) system from the game. We anticipate that this decision might prove controversial for some of you, but we strongly believe that this is the correct way forward. When we started creating Warsaw we had two possible plans in mind: either a single lane, or a 3x3 grid. The 4x2 arrangement we ended up with was a bad compromise, and while it has some benefits, it also brings a lot of problems. The new single lane will be 6 spots wide on each side, and it will not collapse in on itself when there is an empty spot available. This will allow us to retain tactical movement (such as that which we had in the original game) while also introducing big improvements. It will allow us to create a better combatant UI, more intuitive skill ranges, and generally a better visual arrangement of elements on the screen. Cover will work in a different way in Homecoming. The barricades will now become a part of a cell (or a cell modifier, if you will), rather than taking up their own place. They will be split into two categories: heavy and light, each with distinct bonuses. In addition, the penalty of getting shot while out of cover will be much harsher, increasing the importance of keeping your head low. Activation points are now individual instead of being shared. Each character will be able to store up to 3 AP, and will regenerate 2 AP each round. Actions mostly cost 1 AP, which means you'll be able to perform more than one action in an activation. However, some (usually destructive) skills or manoeuvres can cost more... leading to some interesting choices. The range system has been completely revamped. Range will be relative to the position the character is standing in. For example, you may have a pistol skill with range 1, which can only be used from the first spot. Meanwhile, a weapon with range 2 can hit up to two spaces forward, so you can either shoot at the second enemy from the first spot, or shoot at the first enemy from the second spot (and so on). All of the usual features (like area of effect and minimal ranges) remain. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34601314/e3f0397ca8b8151bb0207bfac3fc6c99dbf7360e.jpg Ammunition is being streamlined into a single, unified resource. Ultimately, we decided that the split into three types didn't produce anything meaningful enough to justify its inclusion, and the same effect can be achieved by scaling the amount of ammo you have to use accordingly. The new system will be more readable and easier to understand. Less inventory mess too! Finally, we will be completely reorganising the UI. Important character information such as health, AP, debuffs, etc, will be now displayed next to the character. This will allow for a little more breathing space at the sides of the screen, and the challenges will be integrated at the top instead of sitting awkwardly in the middle. We are also looking at improving the bottom section of the battle UI thanks to the new ammunition system, but we are not ready to share any of the visuals yet. Well, that's it for this month, folks! Hey guys, As you are probably aware we have announced a new, refreshed version of Warsaw called Warsaw: Homecoming, which is currently in development. Starting today, we will be posting monthly Development Updates detailing project progress and giving you a peek behind the curtain. Before we get started, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Bartek. I am one of the owners at Pixelated Milk, and the guy who oversees projects at the studio. You are likely familiar with me, since I am the person who usually writes these posts and answers on the forums (@barjed), but I'd like to introduce myself anyway. Fresh start and all that. Now, let's dive in!

The Goal

There's no escaping the fact that Warsaw had issues at launch. Some of those issues were addressed in patches, but many still remain. Our goal with Homecoming is therefore to completely overhaul the game. We'll be adding new features, improving the old ones, and even including some new assets! Our hope is that the new product will satisfy the veterans of the game and also attract new fans. Please also remember that Warsaw: Homecoming will be free to the existing owners of Warsaw. Improvements: Battle System

Three main issues we will be addressing in the Battle System are battle pacing, skill ranges and ammunition. Right now the battles feel way too slow and you often end up with a single enemy who cannot easily be targeted, which is very frustrating. Damage and health calculations will be re-calibrated across the board. Lethality will also increase, and with it, the general pacing of the battles will also improve. The character positioning system will be upgraded dramatically. We want to preserve the tactical nature of character placement, but also feel the current iteration is needlessly confusing (two lanes) and leads to un-intuitive situations. Finally, the importance of ammunition will be increased. We want to streamline the management of individual bullets, while retaining the signature feel of being low on expensive ammunition. This will also result in expensive skills feeling more impactful and powerful.

Improvements: The Narrative

A completely new storyline is coming to Warsaw, which will tie all of the existing content together in a neat and emotional narrative. Currently-limited stories and character arcs will be expanded, the events of the Uprising will be explained in greater detail, and the whole experience should be greatly improved. The presentation of the story will also be refreshed with a brand new interface that will unify both the existing emergent events and the new critical path storyline.

Improvements: The Strategy Layer

While clearly inspired by XCOM, the strategy layer fell short in Warsaw, and will be reworked. Following feedback, the current "calendar" will be dropped completely (it was clunky and not very intuitive). Instead, we will mesh this layer with the newly added narrative. Your decisions will be tied with the historically unfolding events of the Uprising, and should be much more hard-hitting this time around. They will lead to branching outcomes. For example, by electing to aid a particular section of the Uprising, you will unlock a new character... at the cost of losing someone else.

Improvements: The Exploration

Without disrupting the general flow of the exploration sections of Warsaw, we feel we can improve them significantly to enhance gameplay. Enemies will be much more threatening. They will gain the ability to move instead of just passively sitting there. RNG will be dropped for Mission generation. Instead we will prepare a selection of handmade, high-quality missions with better placement for interesting objectives, secrets, and more. New points of interest will be added to the maps.

Improvements: Theme

There is a lot of historical accuracy in Warsaw already. Authentic weapon types (including some rare ones like Błyskawica), characters based on reality (such as the Berling's Soldier), events dealing with historic occurences (Pasta's destruction, etc). The theme grows weaker in some parts of the game however - such as in the gameplay itself. For this reason, we want to align the theme of the game more closely with the gameplay. You will see an Uprising even more similar to that of reality, with insurgents getting pushed back to the Śródmieście, and missions less about attacking and more about defending against the superior German forces.

Improvements: Soundtrack

One area we've focused on especially for improvement is the game's soundtrack. Our plan is to provide a new, immersive soundtrack for Homecoming of greater quality (and quantity). It will also be a great tool to illustrate the shifting tides and emotions of the new storyline of the game.

Improvements: A Shedload of Other New Stuff

As you can see, Homecoming focuses mostly on the fundamentals of the game, and that's our priority. However, we do want to expand the rest of the game too. You can expect new enemy types and items in addition to everything listed before. - So, that's all for today! Hello everyone, I have two exciting pieces of news to share with you all. Firstly, Warsaw is changing hands and returning to Pixelated Milk! This means that we will assume ownership of the IP and the publishing rights for the game. This is also why we have been silent recently regarding future updates for the game. No longer. The year is coming to an end and we wanted to share the newest update with you today. While working on the console versions of WARSAW (available on Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Xbox series S and X as well) we decided we will want to touch upon and improve certain areas of the game. And these are now – courtesy of the backport - hitting your PC’s today. To make sure this is not something that we are forcing down your throats we will include this as a beta branch of the game where you will be able to feedback the content and take it for a spin before this is rolled into a patch for everyone. To touch upon all the new features incorporated into WARSAW please find the list below: - Reworked tutorial – which should offer a better introduction to the game for those who hadn’t had the chance to pick it up yet. And for those who had, all the stuff we have added post-launch will now be a part of the tutorial as well - Full control support – with native glyphs for all the already not so next gen controllers for PS4, Xbox and Switch - Optimization – a lot of the stuff has been rewritten with performance in mind. Any stutters or lag you had encountered should now be adjusted - Quality of life changes – major of which is the opportunity to change the party formation during city traversal - UI improvements for a better UX - Bug fixes and balance changes – including achievement fixes and addressing the save file problem encountered when the game is closed during saving The build will be firstly available on the beta branch – here’s how to access it: 1. For starters, you must have WARSAW added to your Steam library. 2. Right click on WARSAW on the library list and open Properties. 3. Click on the BETA tab, go to beta Dropdown list and choose the “bootcamp” branch. 4. No password is required so Steam should start downloading the game automatically. 5. Play the game! • Full controller support - with native glyphs for PS4, Xbox and Switch controllers
• Optimization - a lot of the back end stuff has been basically rewritten with performance in mind. Any stutters or lag you had encountered before in the game should be now gone
• Revamped tutorial - a better introduction to the game if you hadn't played it yet. All the stuff we have added post-launch will now be a part of the the tutorial as well.
• Quality of life changes - including the requested adjustment of the party formation while exploring. We also have prepared a couple of small UI tweaks for better UX.
• Bug fixes and balance changes - as usual! This will include achievement fixes and also a fix for the dreaded corrupted save file problem that happens if you kill the game during saving.

You won't have to wait too long for these changes. Stay tuned!

Ding, ding, ding! The progression update is here! Because this is such a big change to how the underlying systems of the game work, we've made a new Feedback topic for these changes exclusively. You can find it here. Please let us know if things now feel better, worse, easier, harder or anything else you can think of! We'll be tweaking the balance of the new XP systems in the upcoming days, before the patch goes to the public branch to make sure it's balanced well. So here's what you get in this patch.

Experience Points

• Your characters now gain XP by completing certain tasks in the game, like fighting enemies or completing Missions.
• XP can be spent on acquiring new Skills and Perks.
• Characters no longer have to follow a randomized progression tree. All Skills are available for purchase from the get go.
• XP is unique per character. That's a nice, powerful Franek you have there. Shame if something would happen to him...
• Commendations can be used to grant additional XP points to any character you want, even ones that did not participate in a given mission.

Challenges

• Two optional challenges are now generated in each battle you fight
• These are small objectives like achieving victory without moving, avoiding a certain type of ammunition, prevailing in a set number of turns, etc.
• Completing these optional challenges will net you additional XP for all participating characters

Perks

• Characters can now buy Perks by spending XP in addition to Skills
• Perks confer passive bonuses to attributes, like Accuracy, Health, Resilience, etc.
• There are over 20 perks available to buy for each character

Hey everyone, we managed to complete a part of the planned update early, so we're pushing it ASAP to the Bootcamp branch as "Żmija" part 1. You are now able to see their skills (complete with full tooltips) and attributes. We have also added some requested information to Characters' entries like their epliogues and names of their personal missions. Codex UI has been refreshed to bring it in line with the rest of the UI and to make it more readable. Hey everyone! New stuff is coming to Warsaw later this month as discussed in the previous update. Let's take a look at how all of those changes will impact both the character progression and the codex.

CODEX

"Żmija" will bring a significantly improved codex experience to you all. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34601314/c03934d54d6a5fe62952ebfcf4319f1934447dfc.png

• UI was completely redone in order to make it more consistent with the rest of the game. The previous iteration had a very tiny text box with large fonts, which made reading stuff a chore. For the new version the "front page" was removed and integrated with the entry list to reduce the amount of clicks necessary to access an entry.
• Locked parts of an entry (mainly in the characters' backstories) are now clearly marked with a grey color. Entry parts are also now separated for additional readability.
• You have asked for the epilogues to display in the codex and we have listened. Unlocked epilogues are now permanently added to a characters' codex entry.
• We now display skills of characters, weapons and ENEMIES (!) in the codex. You can check tooltips of German abilities to better prepare for what lies ahead.
• Attributes (health, accuracy, resistances, etc.) of characters and enemies are now displayed in the codex.
• Finally, the codex can be accessed from any part of the game, including from the battle!

CHARACTER PROGRESSION

This is another total makeover of an important system that will be a part of the "Żmija" update.

• Characters now gain experience (XP) for winning fights, completing missions and so on.
• XP is gained per character. Benched characters do not gain XP.
• Additional XP can be gained by awarding medals to characters. This way your old medals will be still useful in the new system and you will also have a way to boost your reserve insurgents.
• Old characters levels (Rookie, Veteran, etc.) are gone!
• Randomized character skill trees are gone!
• Instead all Skills now have a XP cost added to them. A character can "buy" any skill at any time as long as he or she has XP to pay for it.
• New feature is added to the game - Perks!
• Perks are passive attribute bonuses, which increase health, accuracy, resistances, etc. A number of perks are available in the game. Perks are "bought" using XP, just like skills. After a perk is bought, it is automatically applied to a character from now on. More ways to customize your guys and gals!
• Another new feature is added to the game - Battle Challenges!
• Each battle in the game now has two optional challenges that you can complete for additional XP. These range from limiting yourself to a particular type of ammo, not moving, etc. Challenges should result in more varied battles and provide a more rewarding experience with their risk/reward scenarios.

We have also fixed a number of bugs reported by you on our forums and did additional balance passes to various element of the game. See you in "Żmija" later this month!

Hello everyone, as you no doubt have noticed, there was a delay with "Radosław" and "Żmija" updates. This was due to some behind the scenes stuff and also us re-evaluating the upcoming features. I would like to apologize to everyone, who were eagerly waiting for the updates in December. We will strive to do better in the future. Both content updates are still happening. We have merged the first part of "Radosław" with the public branch today. The rest of the "Radosław" will be combined with the "Żmija" and will be released this month (January). A refreshed Codex, bug fixes, balance tweaks and most importantly, the revamped character progression system will be available soon. NEW BOSS - Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34601314/915893277229dfef12a582df58b49cdb0bc0f8ff.png A new type of a German tank takes to the field. Brummbär is a more resilient, more deadly variation of the Panzer IV. With over 90% damage reduction and a devastating main cannon this one will be a challenge for the insurgents. This enemy also comes with it's own, new mission type you can embark on from the Hideout.

These can be used from any place and may target any enemy on the grid. No ammo needed! The kicker here is that these melee attacks are not very powerful; still, they can be quite useful in a pinch. And wait, there's more! Multiple melee attack types are now available in the game. Some characters simply deal damage while others also push or pull the enemies for some additional utility! NEW FEATURE - EASY MODE You asked for it and we delivered. A fourth difficulty, "Easy", is available now for the more casual players who want a more relaxed challenge level in the game. NEW CHARACTER - ERNEST BUDNIK THE EXECUTIONER Within the ranks of the Home Army, there are men and women tasked with carrying out death sentences issued by the Polish Underground State. When justice falls short, they act. Ernest is one such executioner. Ernest wields revolvers and machine guns. He also has a whole arsenal of unique skills. First and foremost, he's able to apply Awareness to any ally which lets them target any position on the enemy grid while attacking. He's no slouch in other areas, though: Guillotine turns his revolver shots into Critical Hits, On the Mark ignores any Accuracy or Dodge modifiers of the enemy while using machine guns, and to round it all off, he has the ability to heal himself upon killing an enemy. With "Żniwiarz" deployed, we have reached the end of our roadmap for October. Killing the operator early prevents the launcher from firing, but if you wait too long, the Wurfgerät 42 will rain fire upon your team for devastating AOE damage. NEW NARRATIVE EVENT - "Step by Step" Surrounded and left with no options, a family attempts a daring escape.

NEW PLAYABLE CHARACTER - JAN CIEŚLAK THE WATCHMAN {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34601314/6e355a4d505f91280ebe640bd628ce455e82291c.png Jan is a member of the famous 1107th Home Army platoon which consisted in large part of deaf and mute resistance fighters. He wields rifles and grenades. His combat efficiency depends on the positioning of the enemy. As such, comboing him with characters who are able to reposition the Germans will be of great help. In addition, he can increase the activation costs of the enemy to 2 points instead of the usual 1. The nature of his condition also grants him increased resistance to Suppression. On the flip side, due to his inability to communicate through speech, he cannot pass any narrative event checks that rely on Charm, Academics, or Intuition. NEW ENEMY - JAEGER Deadly and effective, the Jaeger will move to benefit from any cover available on the map while buffing himself at the same time. - Significantly increased the chance of recruitment for the Ex-Prisoner, the Uhlan and the Radiooperator. Most of you haven't seen them even once so here's a shot in the arm!

QUALITY OF LIFE

- Refreshed the Commander interface in the Hideout. Active missions and excursions are now displayed on the minimap. Excursions have received a face-lifting to make them more pleasing to the eye and to also make them consistent with the rest of the game.

BUG FIXES
