Greetings Commanders, Friendly Fixer here!
I wanted to take a moment to share some updates on our journey to Steam. The team has been working hard to ensure this transition is as smooth as possible for all of you.
We are fully committed to ensuring that the Steam launch provides a great experience for every Commander. A major part of this is finishing the work on a new user experience (NUX) designed to help new Commanders get into the game. What we have now is an early framework to guide players through the first parts of the game. We want to see how well that does in preparing players and then we will add or adjust content to fit. Bottom line, we wanted to take the extra time to ensure we get things right; it’s better to launch when we’re confident the foundation is solid than to rush a release that doesn't meet our standards.
As time marches on we are focusing our efforts on providing a stable, high-performance environment for the game. We have a lot of experience with browser gaming, and we know it comes with unique challenges, particularly regarding browser compatibility and caching. Moving to Steam allows us to overcome these limitations and provide a more stable client with better performance expectations.
I want to be clear: if you prefer to continue playing outside of Steam, Kixeye.com remains a fully supported option, where gold continues to be cheaper. If you have historically experienced account issues on that platform, we encourage you to reach out to our support team now so we can get ahead of any problems before the migration.
In addition, we are preparing for a major change at the end of this year. On September 30, 2026 Facebook Web Gaming is shutting down. Because we have the game available on Kixeye.com this isn’t a catastrophic situation for War Commander, but it does provide us with another reason for why we are launching on Steam.
I want to manage expectations a bit; we aren’t aiming to over-hype the launch. Our goal is to deliver a stable, reliable client that meets our performance goals. That said, we are seeing some immediate gains and we have seen:
Better, more stable frame rates
Faster game loading and asset caching
Better control of audio playback and new music
Improved input capture and more consistent keyboard controls
We have optimized the client to ensure that players with even lower-end systems can still enjoy a solid, responsive experience. We are confident that if you can run the web game, then the desktop client will be faster and smoother for you. We suggest the following as a minimum specification:
OS: Windows, Mac (Linux to come if able)
Processor: Dual Core 1.8GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: DX9 (shader model 2.0) capabilities
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 2 GB available space
Sound Card: Any compatible with OS
We aren't forgetting about you! While we have some exciting plans coming down the line, we want to keep the focus on our current gameplay first. As a start, we are excited to roll out new audio additions to the game starting next week, so keep an ear out for those changes. We also have listened to the feedback about Strike Ops gameplay and are bringing back Holdout instead. We have a whole roadmap in mind for the early access period but aren’t quite ready to pull the trigger on those items yet. So for now we’ll bring Holdout back while we work with the community to figure out something exciting to replace it. Hang in with us and we look forward to sharing more about what’s coming next as we approach launch.
As part of our ongoing efforts to bring War Commander to Steam, we wanted to share some behind-the-scenes details about how we’re handling logins and account connections. War Commander is technically a cross platform game as it is playable on both Facebook and Kixeye.com. However, the backend server code makes a lot of assumptions about the platforms and doesn’t know anything about an external authorization (auth) source like Steam. This requires several changes to both the server and the client as a first step for a desktop version of War Commander.
Whether you’re a long-time player or new to the battlefield, we know how important it is to have a seamless experience when accessing your account.
When you launch War Commander through Steam, the login process begins with the Steamworks SDK. This toolkit, provided by Steam, allows us to integrate their platform’s features into our game. One of the key features we use is the authentication ticket.
When you start the game, the Steam client generates a unique authentication ticket for your session. This ticket is sent to our servers as part of the request to load the game. On our end, we verify the ticket using the Steam Web API, which confirms that the ticket is valid and gives us your Steam ID. This process ensures that your login is secure and tied directly to your Steam account.
Once we have your Steam ID, the next step is to check if it’s already linked to an existing War Commander account. Here’s what happens behind the scenes:
- If we find a match: Great! You’re logged in and ready to play.
- If we don’t find a match: No problem. We’ll create a brand-new War Commander account for you, linked to your Steam ID.
This means that even if you’re new to the game, you can jump right in without any extra account creation steps.
While the previous method works great for NEW accounts, we know that many of you have been playing War Commander for years. Your accounts are already tied to platforms like Facebook or Kixeye.com and that’s why we’re working on a feature to let you link your existing accounts to Steam.
On game launch, if we don’t find a War Commander account linked to your Steam ID, we’ll prompt you to log in with your Facebook or Kixeye.com credentials. Once you log in, we’ll associate your Steam ID with your existing account. This way you can keep your existing base, platoons, alliance, and be able to play from either platform whenever you like! This feature is still in development, but we’re excited about the flexibility it will offer. Whether you’re a veteran commander or a new recruit, you’ll have the freedom to manage your account across platforms.
By integrating Steam’s authentication system and building tools for account linking, we’re making it easier than ever to access War Commander while keeping your account secure.
We hope this gives you a glimpse into some of the work happening behind the scenes!
War Commander, our long‑running MMO real‑time strategy title known for its base‑building warfare and large‑scale tactical battles, is officially preparing to launch on Steam. This marks a major milestone for the game and we'd like to provide a preview of what to expect over the coming months.
The road to Steam begins with internal work on the Steam API. At this point we are integrating Steam's SDK and creating a login flow for both new and existing users. During this time we will conduct an internal only Tech Test focused on core systems; rendering performance, server stability, and a new PC‑optimized interface. This phase allows the team to identify foundational issues early, as well as build a strong foundation for development on desktop.
Once the technical groundwork is solid, the team will open the gates to a select group of community testers. We'll share how you can join this group at a later date, so stay tuned!
The external Beta Test will center on game client stability, UI refinement, and testing a new user experience. Player feedback during this stage will help shape how War Commander is played on desktop as well as guiding everything from new control inputs to quality‑of‑life improvements.
With the game now stable and feature‑complete enough for broader play, War Commander will enter Steam Early Access. This phase invites the full community to participate in ongoing development, as well as providing a way for us to ensure the new user experience is understandable and will work for new players. Early Access will allow the team to roll out new content, refine progression systems, and ensure the game thrives in a modern PC environment.
Our goals:
For longtime fans, the Steam release represents a fresh start with improved performance and a more accessible platform.
For newcomers, it’s a chance to jump into a classic RTS reborn for today’s players.
