Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage news & patch notes

Hey everyone, Aoki here, producer of the Legacy VIRTUA FIGHTER Project. 

On June 18, we rolled out an update for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage (Ver.1.11). This patch fixes an issue where the game failed to launch if two or more players were registered on the system’s block list, along with a crash that could happen when matching against players using multiple Switch 2 consoles. Updates for other platforms are on the way as well and we appreciate your patience while we get them ready. 

Next, I want to talk about a change we made in Ver.1.10: Combo damage scaling no longer being applied to downed opponents. Since this gets a bit technical, I want to break it down for you. 

In Ver.1.10, we adjusted how combo scaling works when a player chooses not to tech roll after being knocked down. In previous versions, just staying down instead of tech rolling was often the safest, most reliable option. 

That’s because it came with a few key advantages: 

• Damage remained low since combo scaling still applied to ground follow-ups (OTG / on the ground hits). 

• Players could avoid aggressive setups designed to catch tech rolls (aka “tech traps”). 

• Overall, the risk was pretty low. 

The downside, though, was that this created a meta where not tech rolling became the go-to choice way too often, which slowed down matches and hurt the pacing overall. This adjustment was made specifically to address that situation. 

With this change, there will be more situations where OTGs are unscaled, increasing the risk of staying down. So, while we want to encourage players to tech roll more often, the goal isn’t to remove that tactic entirely. It should still be a viable option in the mind games of battle when used intentionally. 

On top of that, the game already has plenty of moves that can relaunch or pick up a downed opponent. Because of that, we think this opens up even more room for players to experiment, whether that’s discovering new combos or calling out an opponent who chooses not to tech roll and punishing them with unscaled follow-ups. 

Switching gears, EVO 2026 was just held in Las Vegas as the third official stop in the VIRTUA FIGHTER Open Championship 2026. There were incredibly high-level matches across the board, and the energy in the venue was electrifying. A big congratulations to Tricky for earning their spot in the Special Event. 

Next up is Battle Arena Melbourne 16 in Melbourne, Australia and we’re looking forward to seeing what new challengers rise up there.

This is Seiji Aoki, producer of the Legacy Virtua Fighter Project. 

First, Id like to thank you for the incredible support. We’ve been thrilled to see players around the world jumping into the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage, Update Ver. 1.10 and the demos on each platform. The response has been fantastic, and the entire development team is truly grateful. 

As you know, we love to hear your feedback as it plays a huge role in how we shape Virtua Fighter’s evolution, so please continue to share your thoughts with us and join the conversation on our official Discord if you haven’t already, to let us know what you think. 

That said, with Ver. 1.10, we made some major changes to the game’s stagger system, and I’d like to provide some insight into why. Stagger has been part of Virtua Fighter since the very beginning, dating back to the arcade era when the game was designed primarily for lever‑based arcade sticks. Even when VF5 first came to consoles, many players were still using arcade sticks, so the system stayed largely the same. 

Over time, especially as the esports scene has evolved, we’ve seen a big shift in how people play. More players now use gamepads and leverless controllers, which led to noticeable differences in how stagger felt depending on your setup. Arcade stick users generally recovered from stagger more easily, while pad players often had a harder time, especially online. We also heard feedback about the physical noise of rapid stick inputs during recovery, which could be frustrating for players playing at home. 

Last year, we held the first global Virtua Fighter Open Championship, and during that period it wasn’t easy to make frequent balance changes. Even though we’d been discussing possible updates to stagger for a while, we held off until the tournament wrapped up. With VFOC now complete, we felt this was the right moment to make meaningful adjustments, which led to the current stagger reduction. 

These changes were guided by a few clear principles: 

• Fully charged attacks no longer cause stagger 

• Attacks that knockdown during stagger still behave as before 

• Moves that relied heavily on stagger now use an easier‑to‑recover hit reaction instead 

• Moves that transition into special stances, like Sarah’s Flamingo, still retain their stagger behavior 

• Wall‑related staggers remain unchanged for now, as altering them would greatly reduce the variety of wall combo options 

You may notice that the stagger recovery UI still displays lever‑style inputs, which can be confusing depending on your controller. This is something we’re aware of and continue to evaluate. As you can hopefully see, these updates reflect how play environments have changed over time, along with the feedback we’ve received from the community. We’ll keep exploring ways to improve the experience going forward. 

As I mentioned in my last producer letter, we’ll be inviting two players to take part in a special event for Virtua Fighter Open Championship 2026 at EVO Japan this weekend. I’ll be attending the event in person as well, and I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with all of you.

Big news today: Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is now live on Nintendo Switch 2! The first ever VF to hit a Nintendo platform. We’ve also dropped demo versions on PS5, XBOX series X|S and Switch 2, plus the Ver.1.10 update. So jump in and please share your feedback with me in the official Discord as it really helps us shape what comes next. 

I also want to give a huge shoutout to Tonchan, our first-ever global champion of the Virtua Fighter Open Championship Global Finals. His play was impeccable and he took home the $100,000 grand prize. Massive congrats! To everyone who made it to the finals or fought through the regional qualifiers: thank you. We’re grateful for electrifying energy you brought to the tournaments. 

Looking ahead: we announced at the VFOC global finals, the VIRTUA FIGHTER Open Championship 2026 kicks off this May, starting at EVO Japan. This time it isn’t just about crowning the strongest player, we really want to focus on bringing the global VF community together. 

Anyone can join the official qualifiers, no matter your region. At the end of the season, the top players from each region will receive invites to a special event. Two slots will be determined at EVO Japan, and Tonchan, our 2025 Global Champion, will join as the defending champ. 

We’re teaming up with tournaments around the world too and we’ll share more details once everything is finalized.

Hi everyone! This is Seiji Aoki, producer of the Legacy Virtua Fighter Project. 

To the entire Virtua Fighter community: thank you so much for your passion and unwavering support. Your dedication is an integral part of what keeps VF alive, and I’m grateful to have you, and the team is excited to continue this journey with you in the year ahead. 

This update marks my 12th Producer Letter, and one year since the launch of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Since then, we’ve released Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage on additional platforms, welcoming tons of new players in the process. It’s been amazing to see players from all over the world jump in and enjoy the game together and seeing our community grow means a great deal to the entire team. 

We know many of you have been waiting patiently for news on the Nintendo Switch 2 version, so I’m happy to share that it will be released in just under two months on March 26! Ahead of launch, we’ll be running an open beta test starting February 18. Please stay tuned for more details. 

We're also excited for the release of update Version 1.08 today, which includes a variety of bug fixes and adds Arabic and Hindi language support to Steam. We hope this makes the experience more enjoyable for players in these regions, and we look forward to your thoughts! 

Next up, on March 1, we’ll be hosting the VIRTUA FIGHTER Open Championship Global Finals at TOKYO NODE HALL in the Toranomon Hills Station Tower in Tokyo. For all fans who would like to attend, seating for general spectators is now open! Along with the tournament, we’ll have giveaways, merch for sale, demo stations, a Mini tournament, food and drinks, and more available. If you can, I’d love you to join us to cheer on the competitors and hang out with the VF community to celebrate this milestone event.

Just last month, the final qualifier for the Virtua Fighter Open Championship, wrapped up at Thaiger Uppercut 2025. Huge congratulations to Leolao for earning the last spot in the Global Finals! Hi everyone, this is Seiji Aoki, Producer of the Legacy Virtua Fighter Project. 

It’s surprising, but this marks the 10th Producer Letter! I sincerely thank each of you for taking the time to read these updates each month. 

How’s Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage treating you so far? Though it launched a few weeks ago it’s been incredible to see so many of you diving into the new content we’ve worked hard to deliver. Theres so much Im proud of in this title, but one of the most is the cross-platform play. Truly unifying the global Virtua Fighter community like never before is amazing and seeing everyone connected and competing across platforms brings me so much joy. 

As always, we’re committed to keeping the game fresh with regular updates, and your feedback plays a key role in shaping its future. Please continue to share any ideas or suggestions with us on our official Discord. We love hearing from you! 

A big congratulations to player GentlemanThief, champion of the “NORTH AMERICA #2” online qualifier. We look forward to seeing you in action at the Global Finals! And to everyone who participated; thank you for giving it your all and contributing to the excitement of the competition. 

This past weekend, we held the final offline qualifier at Thaiger Uppercut 2025 in Thailand and locked in the last spot of the VFOC. With our 10 competitors locked-in they will need to prep for the ultimate showdown: the Virtua Fighter Open Championship Global Finals, happening on March 1, 2026 at TOKYO NODE HALL in Toranomon Hills Station Tower, Tokyo. Fun fact: this will be held at the highest-altitude venue ever used for a fighting game tournament. Just another example of how we’re elevating the fight to the next level, both figuratively and literally! 

Whether you’re joining us in person or cheering on the competitors online, we can’t wait to share this memorable experience with you. And keep an eye out for exclusive merchandise that will be available at the finals, we’ll provide more details soon!

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to all the players who participated, your dedication and competitive spirit made for incredibly exciting matches. 

With Shiokara’s win, the Global Finals now includes seven confirmed competitors. The remaining spots will be determined through three remaining events: 

• The offline tournament “Thaiger Uppercut 2025”, taking place in Thailand this November. 

• The online qualifiers, “EUROPE” and “NORTH AMERICA #2”, which are both open for entry.  

We would also like to extend our gratitude to everyone who participated in the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage Closed Beta Test. Now on to some VIRTUA FIGHTER Open Championship (VFOC) news. Coming in hot is the deadline to register for the first of four online VFOC qualifiers on June 20th. As a reminder, these qualifiers offer a chance to compete for a spot to the Global Finals. I encourage you to sign up today and mark your calendars – I promise it won’t be one to miss!  

Also, the registration deadline for the second VFOC offline qualifier – the "ASIA Qualifier in JAPAN", is on June 22. To add to the excitement, all participants who enter will receive an original VF Tournament T-Shirt! So, if you haven’t registered yet, please do so before its too late. Even if you decide not to participate as a player, general admission is FREE, so I hope to see you there in person to witness the intense battles for a spot in the Global Finals! 

Finally, I’m thrilled to announce that the next update, Ver.1.05, is scheduled for mid-July. Key updates include the option to watch other players' replays in the “Replay Mode”, along with the option to conceal player names during gameplay. Many known bugs are also planned to be fixed in this update. As always, we will continue to implement updates based on requests from players. More details will be shared in another Producer Letter once finalized, so please stay tuned. 

All of us on the VF team look forward to meeting all participants and fans at the "VFOC ASIA Qualifier in JAPAN," on 7/6 at our SEGA headquarters – please come by and say hello!
