Vikings! As Valheim nears its 1.0 release, we are looking to feature stories of our community members and fans who have played the game. Over the years we’ve heard many stories about players finding new friends, a welcoming community and even love through the game, and we’d love to highlight these tales of kinship and comraderie. Whether you played when the game initially released or you’re playing every week to this day, whether you’ve reunited with your friends through Valheim or found your future spouse in the Tenth Realm, we’d love to hear from you! If you’d like to share your personal Valheim Journey, we encourage you to record a video in which you describe your experience and submit it for a potential feature in an upcoming video piece that we’re putting together. Vikings! For a long time you have asked when we will see the release of the Deep North, and at last we have a date to offer you! Valheim 1.0 will arrive on 9 September, with new enemies to kill, bases to build and weapons to craft. The release will hit PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as per usual, and now we’re also adding PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 to the roster. Of course there will be full crossplay between all the platforms, so that you can play with your friends. Hello vikings! We would like to start off on a slightly different note this month, where instead of us sharing something with you, we want to ask you to share something with us. We are entering the final stages of development for the Deep North, and for Valheim 1.0, and for that launch to be the best it possibly can be we are in need of your help! There is currently a patch out on the PTB that features a rework of the save system, and we would be eternally grateful if you wanted to switch over to the PTB and test it out. What we would ask you to be particularly attentive to is any issues with your savedata or with the network functionality – if you find any issues pertaining to this (or any other bugs, of course) please report them in our official form. Thank you most kindly! On the topic of sharing, we also want to hear about your experiences of Valheim as a whole! Over the years we have received so many stories about people finding friends, community and love through the game, and we want to highlight these tales of kinship and joy. If you would like to tell us about what Valheim has meant to you, we encourage you to record a short video and submit it via this form. It doesn’t have to look professional by any means, just follow the specifications listed in the form. Most importantly, tell us your story! ⚠️ Note: This update is for the Public Test branch of Valheim only, and may therefore be unstable! Prior to launching this update to the Default version of the game, we want to have a chance to discover bugs and fine-tune the balancing to ensure the best game experience.

• ACCESS: Right-click Valheim in your Steam library, then select ‘Properties’. In the new window, select ‘Betas’ and type in the code “yesimadebackups”. The Public Test branch should now be available for you to select. The PTB FAQ can be found here.

Please remember to be considerate towards players who are not participating in the Public Test, as some may prefer to avoid spoilers. As indicated by the access code, please ensure to create backups of your save files before playing. In this update we’re introducing a new save system for your Valheim worlds! The purpose of this is to make the game save faster, and to decrease the risk of corrupt save files. What the new system means in practice is that the game now saves your world in smaller chunks, and only the chunks that have been modified since the last save will be affected. Worlds will no longer be saved with a .db and a .fwl file, but will instead be saved and stored in separate folders, with the .db file broken down into smaller pieces. Backups will also have their own separate folders. Please note that if you intend to switch between the PTB and the Live branch of the game, it is not advisory to move your files around manually. If this sounds overly technical, don’t worry – unless you’re frequently moving your files around manually, you won’t notice any difference beyond faster saving times! For users who are running Valheim with mods, please note that this system has not been tested with mods. While we don’t believe there should be any issues relating to this, modding the game is always done at your own risk.

Detailed Patch Notes:

* Introducing a new world save system * The new save system only affects world saves, character saves remain the same. * When saving, only the chunks that have been modified are saved. * Instead of saving a world with the .db and .fwl files it’s now stored in folders and the world (.db) is split up in multiple files (chunks). * Backups are stored in separate folders. * When loading a world that is not chunked, a backup is made first so no data is lost in case of potential new bugs. * The save system performs extra checks after saving to make sure it saved properly, which reduces the risk of a corrupt save. * There is a new limitation in cloud storage, up until now it was only the total size of all saves. Some platforms have a limit in how many files can be saved, this was previously not a limitation but now there will be way more files saved.

Hello vikings! We began this month of April, as is customary, with a bit of a laugh. Most of you caught on to the fact that it was an April Fools joke, but we do want to make sure to clarify that there is not going to be an additional game mode in Valheim where you can romance all the bosses, as fun as that might have been. Who had the most charming dialogue options? Who had the most romantic ending? We shall never know. We also want to thank the team behind Val-Con for organising their event for the second time! Thank you for taking the time to bring the community together and celebrating Valheim! Our very own Robin Eyre and Jonathan Smårs featured during the event, as well as some of our friends from other companies who have helped us make the game, so make sure to check out their interviews in the VOD. But now, onto some teasers! Last month we asked if you had any guesses as to what one might be able to cook in the Deep North, and many of you guessed it: Meatballs with lingonberries, of course! Hello Vikings! While the story of Hervor Bloodtooth has come to an end, the same cannot be said for the Deep North. We continue to work away on crafting the biome, and today we want to show you a couple of different wintery snippets of what to expect, before spring is properly upon us! First out, we want to show perhaps one of our most Swedish aspects of the biome – the lingonberries. They can be found and harvested in the woods, and used in several of the biome’s food recipes. Got any guesses as to what you might be able to cook? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/33695701/9945ae424047e96c65883b6c383356b066df5189.png When it’s cold and snowy, one thing to always watch out for is slippery ice. This will need to be cleared if you want to settle down and build a base somewhere, but fortunately you can craft a shovel for this very purpose. Speaking of you, our brilliant community, it’s almost time for the second edition of the fan-run, online community event Val-Con! It takes place in the middle of April, and there are a whole bunch of fun activities scheduled. This year, Iron Gate is officially participating, and we’re happy to pitch in with some fun prizes for the competitions and raffles during the event. Hello Vikings! First of all, thank you for all the kind messages during our five year anniversary earlier this month. We wouldn’t be here without all of you! You might also have noticed that we announced that Valheim is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year! We’re really excited for this, and as usual we’re very thankful to have Piktiv helping us out with the port. Please note that the release will only be for Nintendo Switch 2, and not for the first Nintendo Switch console. More information about the release will come in time, but for now you can wishlist the game on the Nintendo eShop. With these two milestones behind us we also want to share with you the final part of the Voyage of Hervor Bloodtooth: Now, it must be said that Hervor’s story took place quite a long time ago, in a Deep North that’s a little bit different from the biome that you will explore yourselves, but perhaps there might still be some traces left of her for you to find… One thing that will still remain standing despite the passage of time is of course the massive structure that marks the end of Hervor’s journey. What lies beyond this gate shall remain a mystery for all but the truly worthy, however. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/33695701/0221db54b074b6e05ec35f12010223c5acc5ba67.png And while this marks the end of Hervor’s story, we will of course keep having further teasers in our Words from the Devs in the months to come, rest assured! We've got a couple of fixes for you today! Please also note that playing using Vulkan might currently cause Valheim to be unstable and/or crash. If you want to continue using Vulkan, you can disable the FPS limiters in e.g. the Nvidia Control Panel for a hopefully smoother experience. Rest assured that we're working on a solution for the Vulkan issue, however, and that it should hopefully be back to normal soon!

* Added release-to-select in the radial menu: If you continue holding down the radial menu button/key after the radial menu appears, you can select an emote by releasing the button/key. * Reverted crouching being unintentionally changed to a press-and-hold action on gamepad. Now it’s back to being a single press again. * Fixed annoying resolution setting behavior in windowed mode when changing settings. * Fixed crash on startup on Windows that triggers under specific conditions when using Vulkan. * Fixed audio stutters in Ashlands. * Fixed sometimes not being able to apply graphics settings properly the first time after updating from an earlier version. * Fixed some minor UX issues in the graphics settings menu. For modders: * Fixed a null reference exception that started happening in 0.221.10 when mods directly or indirectly accessed preferences at startup (for example via the localization system).

Greetings vikings! Today marks the five year anniversary since Valheim was first released into Early Access – and what an incredible five years it’s been! We want to thank everyone who has been a part of our journey and our community since then, whether you started playing on day one or have just been carried by the valkyrie for the first time. We greatly appreciate every single one of you, and we’re so glad to have you walk this path with us. For this anniversary you will find a patch live right now for everyone, with some new celebratory items and emotes, along with some quality of life fixes! If you want to keep the celebration going throughout the week, you can tune in to Twitch on Thursday, where there will be a livestreamed concert by the Munich Radio Orchestra! Greetings vikings! We’ve truly hit the colder part of the year now, which gives us plenty of inspiration for the Deep North landscape. And just as we continue to work on the biome, Hervor Bloodtooth is continuing her journey: Many of you have speculated for a long time, and as we now take a closer look at some of the abandoned structures in the Deep North, we want to properly confirm that the update will add the possibility to build steeper roofs! The 67° roof pieces will be 4 meters high, and available for both the thatch as well the darkwood roof styles. Hello vikings! We want to start with mentioning a Unity security vulnerability that occurred a few weeks back. There is no evidence that the vulnerability ever reached Valheim in any way, and we hurried to patch the game with the necessary updates from Unity as soon as we could. We didn’t make any announcement about this at the time as we didn’t want to cause unnecessary alarm, but we do also want to assure you that the game is safe for you to play. We thank you for your understanding! But now to the more lighthearted stuff! The time has come to finally check back in with Hervor Bloodtooth. Without further ado: The creatures down in the winding tunnels couldn’t best her! How do you think you’ll fare once it’s your turn to square up against them? Greetings vikings! Since our last check-in we have moved the Call to Arms update from the Public Test Branch and into the Live version of the game! We want to thank everyone who tested the game during the PTB, as well as everyone who has played it since the official release. We hope you’re not too bruised from your battles! There are possibly some more tweaks coming to that update in the coming weeks and months, as we want to see how everyone experiences the new changes, beyond those who tested in the PTB. But besides that we’re now focusing the team solely on content for the Deep North and 1.0. Armour sets are being designed, dungeons are getting fleshed out, and enemies are being animated. We’re itching for you to see it all, but we also want to make sure that there’s plenty of things left for you to discover on your own! We’re holding off a bit longer still to see what became of Hervor Bloodtooth but, just like last month, we want to show you something from the Deep North regardless. This time we’re taking a peek at some new furniture pieces, made from a new type of wood found in the biome. They’re a bit chunkier than what we’ve had so far, and both the chair and the table have some decorative designs carved into them. It’s something that we’ve been getting many requests for over the course of Valheim’s development, and we’re really excited that it’s soon to come true. You can read more about the PlayStation release, as well as watch the new trailers (yes, multiple!), in the announcement post. As you may have guessed, the upcoming PlayStation release is the reason that we’re going to Tokyo Game Show next week, and those passing by our booth will have the opportunity to be among the first to play the game on a PlayStation console. We hope to see some fans there! You will also find Valheim at the boardgame fair SPIEL ESSEN in Germany in October! Our friends at MOOD will be there to showcase the Valheim boardgame which is now manufactured and ready to ship out to everyone who backed the Gamefound campaign. It's time to bring Call to Arms from the PTB and into Valheim proper! As always, a huge thank you to everyone who has tested it already, and a grand welcome to all new players! This updates features plenty of ways of self-improvement – whether that be wooden weapons for sparring with your comrades, or a built structure to hone your fighting skills against. You can also find a brand new type of item in the form of trinkets, which will help you in the heat of battle. And as there are some new dangerous foes around, you might find that you very much need them… You’ll find the full patch notes below, whether you want them abbreviated or detailed. Hello vikings! We want to begin with mentioning that we’ll be renaming these monthly blog posts to “Word From the Devs”, since many of you have felt that the name “Development Blog” isn’t as fitting anymore. We hope that the new naming will be more suitable, and that it will cover everything these posts are about! We also want to reassure you all that we are very much still working on the game, and that there are a lot of things behind the scenes that we aren’t showing you just yet! The Deep North development is in progress, but we want to leave a lot of it for you to discover yourselves. Hello vikings and Rocky-fans! We've gone digging deep into our archives today, vikings! We found some old stuff that you will recognize already (but we're putting it all here anyway so no one misses it), but we also found something that's been gathering dust for ages, perhaps even since the 90s! We made sure to digitize the old cassette for you, for your convenience.

Greetings vikings! We’d like to start off this post by saying thank you to everyone we met at GDC this year! It’s always a pleasure to get to meet people who have played our game, and this time around was no exception. It was great to meet you! But a new blog post also means by now that it’s time for a new episode of the Voyage of Hervor Bloodtooth. As she is making her way further inland, what will she discover? It may look like a peaceful place, but the Deep North can be more hostile than it first appears to be... Just a small patch of fixes for you today, thanks for testing on the PTB!

* Fix a crash on Xbox that could occur when entering suspend mode while playing online multiplayer * Fix memory leak for HUDs of dead enemies * Moved pause menu back to where it originally was * Fix two cases of log spam for server hosts related to block and permitted lists * It’s now possible to hide boss and death markers via controller again

It's once again time for a patch! Today we have a bunch of bug fixes and optimizations for you, such as fixing memory leaks and improving snap points for certain build pieces, and plenty more. Hopefully this patch will mean a smoother Valheim experience for all! Thank you to everyone who helped test the patch during the PTB round!

All platforms: * Optimized Asset Bundles, reducing start-up times by up to 75%, build size by up to 35% and memory usage by 110 MB. Should also reduce the download size of future patches. * Optimized UI rendering, improving FPS by 5-10% when CPU bound * Fixed memory leak that occurred when generating subsequent new worlds * Changed certain sound files to be loaded in background, reducing some specific lag spikes * Added a fix for movement to behave the same when holding down secondary attack while moving with the gamepad as on keyboard. * Removed “Detailed particle systems” from Graphics settings and make the “off” setting the default. * Added a fix to allocate less memory and lower execution time for certain types of input * Fixed a bug that caused inaccurate collision detection between AoEs and characters in multiplayer scenarios, e.g. sometimes catching on fire even when not walking into the fire. * Fixed mouse being stuck held down after naming a map pin with virtual keyboard. * Improved chat message and sign compliance with platform privileges, parental controls and local block list * Game now shows in-game player names in Player List for cross-network users as well * Reduced memory usage of profile pictures in Player List * Fixed a bug where tooltips in settings menu did not show up in-game * Fixed a freeze that could occur when changing the permitted list * Boss and death map icons are no longer manually placeable via controller * Asksvin trophy icon now matches the colour of the actual trophy * Cooked Asksvin Tail and Roasted Crust Pie no longer sparkle when attached to an itemstand * Tweaked snap points of Ashwood Stakewalls for better alignment * Tweaked snap points for Grausten wall 2x2 for better alignment * Grausten arches are now allowed to be placed in different orientations in the same position * Grausten Roof Corner no longer changes position when damaged * Blackmarble floor triangle and tip are no longer burnable * Fixed an issue that made some events able to trigger without their conditions being met * Hiding UI with CTRL + F3 now also hides sailing UI and Pause Menu UI * A brief message is now shown when hiding UI using a gamepad * Updated localization Xbox/MS: * Game no longer needs to be restarted to observe profile updates in the game * Added invite button to pause menu * Reduce network usage somewhat for functionality related to Xbox network. * Gamepad association UI now reappears if the gamepad is disconnected and a keyboard & mouse is not connected, or if gamepad input when no user is assigned to it * Reduced risk of crashes * Chat messages can no longer be sent if text communication is disabled via system.
