Milepost Simulations now brings Colorado’s legendary Alpine Tunnel Route through the Rockies to Train Simulator Classic!

Now, the Alpine Tunnel route, as originally built by the fabled Denver South Park and Pacific and operated by the Colorado & Southern, comes to Train Simulator Classic!

Created for Train Simulator Classic by acclaimed developer Milepost Simulations, the C&S Alpine Tunnel route extends from St. Elmo to Pitkin, Colorado, a distance of around 22 miles, and re-creates a portion of Colorado & Southern’s Gunnison Division during the period 1905-1910.

Narrow-gauge railroading in the Colorado Rockies has always had appeal that bordered on the mystical. To climb up and over the Colorado Rockies via Alpine Tunnel, grades of 3 and 4 percent were the norm, along with a twisting path that included multiple horseshoe curves and treacherous paths set to the very edge of towering cliffs. Most noted of all was the “Palisades,” a stone wall and embankment constructed to support the line as it clung to a vertical stone face. Such was the challenge of the railroad that it frequently required three or even four locomotives to power even a modest freight.

Constructed by the Denver, South Park, and Pacific (DSP&P) during 1880-1882, the railroad would endure the financial difficulties so common to Colorado narrow-gauge lines, becoming the Denver, Leadville, and Gunnison (DL&G) in 1889, falling under the control of Union Pacific in 1894, and finally included in the new Colorado & Southern in 1899.

At Alpine Tunnel, the railroad operated an engine house with enclosed turntable as well as a small depot. More than 1,700 feet in length, Alpine Tunnel also boasted of lengthy wood snow sheds at each portal. Never rich in traffic, the line hauled coal and mixed tonnage as well as passengers, often using mixed trains to serve both. In time though, the route proved simply too tough and too brutal to operate, and it was often closed during winter and other periods. A cave-in at Alpine Tunnel in 1910 was the final straw and the railroad ceased operation.

As created for Train Simulator Classic, the C&S Alpine Tunnel route brings to life the railroad’s handsome Baldwin-built 2-8-0 Consolidations (originally constructed for the Denver, Leadville, and Gunnison), and includes a captivating roster of nine types of narrow-gauge freight and passenger equipment. The route beautifully replicates the magnificent Colorado mountain scenery of the region and includes yards, servicing facilities, stations, and lineside mines and structures.

A selection of nine career scenarios deliver the realistic – and exceptionally challenging – experiences of serving as engineer to battle Colorado’s unforgiving yet majestic mountains.

Now available from accomplished developer Milepost Simulations, the C&S Alpine Tunnel: St. Elmo to Pitkin Route brings legendary and dramatic steam-era narrow-gauge railroading to Train Simulator Classic! Making the eastbound climb toward Alpine Tunnel, Colorado & Southern 2-8-0 No. 68 and two sisters are lifting tonnage through the scenic Colorado Rockies and approaching Quartz.

The C&S Alpine Tunnel route extends from St. Elmo to Pitkin, Colorado, a distance of around 22 miles, and will recall a portion of Colorado & Southern’s Gunnison Division during the period 1905-1910. Baldwin-built C&S Consolidation No. 62 has just departed the depot at snowy St. Elmo (above) with a mixed train, while at Pitkin, a trio of C&S 2-8-0s is departing with coal tonnage in tow (below).

The C&S Alpine Tunnel route features the railroad’s B4D-class 2-8-0s, which were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1890 and originally served the Denver, Leadville, and Gunnison. The diminutive but potent locomotive is provided in standard configuration and with a large snow plow affixed.

At an elevation of nearly 11,600 feet, C&S No. 64 is emerging from the west of 1,772-foot-long Alpine Tunnel (above). Nearby, the railroad hosted a stone engine house that included an enclosed turntable (below).

Jaw-dropping scenery was the norm on the Alpine Tunnel route, and nowhere more so than on the west slope of the line between the summit and Woodstock. C&S 2-8-0 No. 68 and a passenger train are easing along the sheer cliffs at the “Palisades” (above). On the rear of a westbound short freight rides a four-wheeled wooden “bobber” caboose (below). The route includes nine types of C&S freight and passenger rolling stock.

With nearly constant grades of 3 and even 4 percent, the Alpine Tunnel route required multiple locomotives to tote even moderate tonnage. C&S B4D 2-8-0 No. 68, with sisters farther back in the consist, is chugging between large stone boulders at Quartz.

The C&S Alpine Tunnel route wonderfully recalls the small towns, yards, and lineside structures of the turn-of-the-century era. C&S Consolidation No. 64 is spotting gondolas at the Golf Mill near Romley (above), while on a snow-dressed day sister No. 63, with a flanger attached, prepares to take on water at Hancock (below).

With pick-up and set-out work at Bozeman Yard completed, ex-Great Northern EMD GP30 2202 is on the point of BN regional freight No. 196 climbing the west slope of Bozeman Pass. The Burlington Northern inherited stylish GP30s from both Great Northern and Burlington Route.

In the early 1970s, Electro-Motive landmark SD40-2 was “new power.” On a winter day, a quartet of SD40-2s have just reached the rugged summit of Bozeman Pass and are about to enter the west portal of 3,015-foot Bozeman Tunnel. At the massive Trident cement plant, regional freight No. 195 with a duo of EMD GP38-2s is making pick-ups and set-outs at the facility. Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01 features operations across the length of the acclaimed Train Simulator Classic Bozeman Pass route.

Livingston, at the eastern foot of Bozeman Pass, was the site of a major yard and shop facility – and a magnificent station – dating back to the Northern Pacific era. The ten new career scenarios of Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01, based closely on actual railroad operations and train symbols of the era, promise to deliver the challenging experiences of railroading on one of America’s great railroads – and it’s coming soon to Train Simulator Classic!

Coming soon, Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01 will feature challenging BN railroading from the 1970s through the early 1980s on the magnificent ex-Northern Pacific Train Simulator Classic Bozeman Pass route. At Logan, a local waits to depart while an eastbound manifest rolls past on the main line.

With Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01, you will climb aboard and take the controls of eight types of Burlington Northern Electro-Motive and General Electric diesels. In a two-part end-to-end run of the scenic Bozeman Pass route, Burlington Northern EMD F45 6600 leads a westbound grain train at the summit of the pass.

A pair of Burlington Northern General Electric U25B “U-Boats” work a Butte-bound local on the line to Three Forks. With the upcoming Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01, you will handle heavy tonnage, priority intermodal traffic, locals, and switching duties.

Created in 1970 through merger of the “Hill Lines,” the new Burlington Northern Railroad was in its earliest days a rainbow of colors as the locomotives of the merged roads operated in original liveries. At Trident, trains meet with diesels wearing the vibrant colors of Burlington Northern, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, and Burlington Route.

Ex-Great Northern EMD GP30 2202 is on the point of BN regional freight No. 196 as it handles pick-up and set-out work at Bozeman Yard while a westbound freight rolls past. The town of Bozeman was a key operating point on the route.

In the early 1970s, Electro-Motive landmark SD40-2 was “new power.” On a winter day, a quartet of SD40-2s are bringing an empty unit coal train down the east slope of Bozeman Pass while a trio of sisters serve as helpers on a westbound climbing to the summit.

At the massive Trident cement plant, regional freight No. 195 with a duo of EMD GP38-2s is making pick-ups and set-outs at the facility. Burlington Northern Scenario Pack 01 will feature operations across the length of the acclaimed Train Simulator Classic Bozeman Pass route.

Livingston, at the eastern foot of Bozeman Pass, was the site of a major yard and shop facility dating back to the Northern Pacific era. Burlington Northern EMD GP9 1713 is handling shop and yard switching chores on a wintry day in Montana.

Stretching from the Potomac Valley of Maryland across the summit of the Alleghanies in West Virginia, the railroad was called the “West End” in an earlier time and then the Mountain Subdivision of the historic Baltimore & Ohio and today’s rail goliath, CSX.

Train Simulator Classic’s acclaimed B&O Mountain Subdivision Route re-creates this famed 101-mile rail line that extends from Cumberland, Maryland to Grafton, West Virginia – and now CSX Scenario Pack 03 brings modern-day CSX railroading to this extraordinary route!

CSX Scenario Pack 03, created by High Iron Simulations, features ten new and realistic career scenarios that bring heavy haul railroading to life as CSX totes massive coal trains as well as manifest freight across the scenic and rugged spine of the Alleghany Mountains.

Set in the era from 2014 to the present day, CSX Scenario Pack 03 will put you at the throttle of five locomotive types ranging from third-generation titans such as General Electric’s ES44DC to CSX’s unique and versatile SD40-3 rebuilds, all ready to tackle the route’s unforgiving 2.2 percent twisting grades and tonnage.

The Mountain Subdivision, opened in 1852, has through its long history been renowned for coal-hauling, and you will handle 100+ car loaded unit coal trains with head-end and DPU (distribution power unit) locomotives as well as manned helpers to lift tonnage over the Alleghanies. You’ll also climb aboard CSX power to usher empty trains back toward the mines, operate the line’s workhorse manifest freight, and handle local and switching duties.

With CSX Scenario Pack 03, you will:

Make an end-to-end, Grafton-to-Cumberland run across the Mountain Subdivision in a challenging four-part scenario. En route, the train will, over specific portions of the line, authentically operate with and without mid-train DPU locomotives and with and without rear-end manned helpers.
Take the controls of CSX’s westbound workhorse manifest freight – symbol Q-317 – in a two-part scenario that includes the tough climb of legendary 17-Mile Grade and the equally unforgiving descent of Cranberry Grade.
Aboard a CSX EMD GP40-2, work the Mountain Subdivision’s westbound L-163 local freight, handling switching duties en route at Keyser, West Virginia, and the sprawling paper plant at Luke, Maryland.
Handle a heavy coal train coming off the ex-Western Maryland Thomas Subdivision bound for Newport News, Virginia. It’s a snowy, slippery day, but your power set led by a veteran CSX General Electric C40-8W will be up to the task.
Work a westbound empty hopper train that’s also been called upon to lug overflow manifest tonnage from symbol freight Q-317. With a trio of CSX’s unique SD40-3 rebuilds, you’ll make a pickup at M&K Junction, then climb the Cheat River Grade.
Serve as engineer of loaded eastbound coal train U787 making the crossing of Newburg and Cranberry Grades on a wintry day. Despite the weather, local railfans surely will be out, because on the point of your train is a power-pooled BNSF diesel.

Snow is falling as CSX GE C40-8W 7853 leads a unit coal train off the ex-Western Maryland Thomas Subdivision and ducks under the Mountain Subdivision main line near West Virginia Junction as an eastbound coal train powered by EMD SD40-2 diesels glides overhead.

At Tunnelton, West Virginia, a set of unique CSX SD40-3 rebuilt diesels have westbound mixed tonnage on the move. The SD40-3 is the result of CSX’s locomotive remanufacturing program based upon veteran SD40-2 diesels. With CSX Scenario Pack 03, you’ll climb aboard five types of second- and third-generation CSX diesel power.

Grinding upgrade alongside Racoon Creek, CSX unit coal train U787 passes through Newburg, West Virginia. Immediately ahead is an unforgiving climb to the top of Newburg Grade at Tunnelton. In the lead of the eastbound train is a power-pooled BNSF General Electric ES44DC.

Train Simulator Classic, the ultimate railway hobby, returns with a new core package in 2025, featuring three iconic routes from the wide world of railways. In this article, we outline the offering in 2025 and answer questions about the present and the future of our much-loved, longest-running train simulation title. We also announce a new country coming to TSC in the form of a future route Add-on! Read on to find out more. The release last year was called ‘Train Simulator Classic 2024’. This year, it is simply ‘Train Simulator Classic’. Why the change? The ‘Classic’ label was introduced a couple of years ago, and reflects the status of TSC as our original, long-standing train sim, which offers a different experience and a different appeal to Train Sim World. 2024 was a landmark year, combining a number of updates to the core code, as well as being the 15th anniversary of Train Simulator, which launched in 2009 as RailWorks. This year, we are reverting back to the simple ‘Classic’ naming for the longer term – though we may still offer alternative editions to go alongside ‘Classic’. What does that mean for the core game? We are sticking with the current version of the game code. We did a lot of work on the core last time, and we feel it is now stable for the majority of players. To make any further code changes would again take us along a path of potential disruption for players and for developers, and it doesn’t seem warranted or fair to do that at this point. What is different about TS Classic this time around? What makes it interesting for players or would-be players? A major difference this time is the inclusion of Partner Developer route and loco content within the core package. Like many games, TSC has included components developed by external creators many times over the years, right back to the days of RailWorks in 2009. This year’s version is unusual in that it features two complete routes, with locos, entirely conceived developed and by third party developers. So, what will be included in TSC, and why will third-party routes form part of it? In keeping with the ‘Classic’ theme, TSC will feature three routes from our traditional TSC heartlands – the UK, the USA and Germany. Our very own Chatham Main Line: London Victoria & Blackfriars – Dover & Ramsgate is all about commuter services, with a lengthy track map and plenty to do. On the other hand, Norfolk Southern Saluda Grade by High Iron Simulations puts you in charge of heavy freight trains tackling the hills of North Carolina, while TSG’s Konstanz – Villingen gets you moving both passengers and freight on the Upper Rhine and Black Forest railways. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/958135/ff42c1f95a64cbd210e5537115d7716e7f4b1efc.jpg The Chatham Main Line is featured in its entirety from London Victoria to Ramsgate and Dover via Faversham. You’ll climb aboard three types of authentic Norfolk Southern diesels and experience extraordinary and memorable mountain railroading. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/958135/62683775ae08e3ffd43a3ed57bca000a9daae2fa.jpg Konstanz and Villingen are connected by more than 90km of scenic inter-city rail. From Konstanz, the line starts off as the Upper Rhine Railway, which has followed the path of the great river since the 1840s. The Upper Rhine Railway stretches all the way from Mannheim down to the Swiss city of Basel, before sharply darting east and following, plus frequently crossing, the German-Swiss border all the way to Konstanz. Trains from Konstanz, bound for Villingen, follow this path as far as Singen. You will experience all of this from the cab of the BR111 and the BR189. Now that TS Classic relies more heavily on third-party content, making it part of the core product means that we can continue to offer refreshed TSC core packs for a long time to come, built around some of the most popular third-party routes and locos with all their expertise and innovation built in. What role does DTG play in the life of TS Classic now? Has the focus shifted away from TSC now? DTG is still committed to the future of TS Classic! We simply rely much more now on the thriving third party development community to bring new content to TSC, and to Steam, and we plan to continue working with 3PPs for as long as they plan to work with us. Even in the past year, we have begun work with additional developers such as 3D Zug, Diesel Workshop and others, and many other familiar developers are working on new content for TSC at this moment. In fact, we're delighted to announce that we'll be bringing a brand new country to TS Classic this year: The Netherlands! It's a little way off yet, but an all-new route from Amsterdam to Hilversum is currently in the works, and will be a joint production by DTG and Jasksoft. We're excited to see what you think, and we'll share more details in the future. Three legendary American railroads, the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Milwaukee Road, crossed the Rockies of Montana to link the Upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest by rail – and now the Milwaukee Road’s legendary electrified Rocky Mountain Division crossing of the Rockies comes to Train Simulator Classic with the Pipestone Pass: Three Forks – Butte route! Created by accomplished developer Milepost Simulations, the Pipestone Pass: Three Forks – Butte route extends from Three Forks, Montana, across the Rockies via Pipestone Pass and west to Butte, Montana, a distance of 70 route miles. Utilizing lengthy grades of up to 2 percent, high trestles, and numerous tunnels, the line crossed the U.S. Continental Divide at an elevation of 6,347 feet above sea level. Born in 1874, the much-admired Milwaukee Road (formally, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad) in the early 20th century boldly pursued its “Pacific Extension,” an initiative to stretch westward from the Upper Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. Between 1905 and 1915, at a cost of $60 million, the “MILW” extended its rails westward through South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho to Washington State. The extension included crossing five mountain passes, among which was Pipestone Pass and its high elevation crossing of the Continental Divide. To power its trains in this remote and daunting mountain territory, the Milwaukee Road chose to electrify significant portions of its route in the Rockies, Bitterroot, and Cascade Mountains, including the 440 miles of railroad between Harlowton, Montana and Avery, Idaho. To toil under the wood-pole catenary of its new extension, the Milwaukee Road in 1915-16 acquired 42 burly double-unit General Electric boxcab electric motors rated at 3,340 horsepower. Truly built for the ages, the big electrics would toil for well more than a half-century, with the last of these potent GE electrics remaining in service into the 1970s (the Milwaukee Pacific Extension itself closed in 1980). Delivered in two-unit sets, the electrics would over the years be configured in three- and four-unit lash-ups. The motors can be driven in series or parallel. Series is used for slow speed and parallel for faster speeds, followed by a shunt setting. The throttle has 17 series notches, of which 1-16 are resistance notches; there are two blank notches before moving to 12 parallel resistance notches followed by a full parallel notch. LNER/BR Class A1 ‘Tornado’

Designed by Arthur H Peppercorn, of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). They were the last in a line of famous express passenger steam locomotives for the East Coast Main Line. Drive the ‘Tornado’ along the East Coast Main Line: London – Peterborough, or take it on a tour around the UK on routes like North Wales Coast Line or Fife Circle Line.

BR Blue Pack

This pack includes five such locomotives ready for operation. The BR Class 03 small shunter, the BR Class 25 ‘Rat’, BR Class 31, BR Class 37 ‘Tractor’, and the Cravens BR Class 105. These frequently appear at heritage days across the UK and you can now run them on your routes with the Rail Subscription. Originally unveiled in 2012 these liveries celebrate some of the railroad companies who were consolidated into Norfolk Southern. Union Pacific Heritage SD70ACes

During the mid-2000's Union Pacific re-painted six of its SD70ACe units in to celebrate old rail roads companies. This includes the Denver & Rio Grande Western with its striking mountain livery, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas with the red ‘Katy’ livery and more. Use these units for nostalgic freight runs on routes like Sherman Hill, or take them out on the rails for enthusiasts to enjoy.

DB BR 86

The Class 86 was designed to be operated on goods trains across branch line routes throughout Germany and beyond with Deutsche Bundesbahn, ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) and PKP (Poland) all using this locomotive. 15 years ago on 12 June 2009, RailWorks launched on PC marking the start of what would become an epic journey for the simulator and Dovetail Games. A decade and a half later this has grown into Train Simulator Classic, which is played by railfans the world over in 130+ countries! Today the simulator features a wide range of experiences from modern to historic with over 700 add-ons available allowing you to customise your hobby and over 25,000 Workshop creations. You’ve been busy! In honour of this momentous occasion, we’re running a 15th Anniversary celebration this week at Dovetail Games. Read on to find out more about what’s happening.

Music Release

Train Simulator Classic

The core simulator has been updated this month with a free patch. This includes performance improvements, updates to tools, new command line options, as well as a range of fixes and updates to improve your experience with the simulator. Full patch notes. You should already have this update, if not make sure you turn on automatic updates on Steam. Note, with this release the Public Beta is now closed. It will re-open in the coming months as we begin our next phase of work on Train Simulator Classic.
