This update is focused on the things players have been bringing up the most: performance, AI-generated content, and controller support. Also includes an Inventory Overhaul.
We’ve been reading reviews, discussions, bug reports, Discord feedback, and Steam comments. A lot of 0.8.4 is the result of that feedback, and we want to say thank you to everyone who took the time to report issues or explain what wasn’t working for them.
Performance was one of the biggest concerns players reported, so a major part of 0.8.4 was spent rebuilding and optimizing systems that affect every level of the game.
This included adding LODs to many high-detail objects, overhauling the physics system, reducing CPU load across interactions, the character controller, and background processes, and optimizing shadow maps with tiered update rates based on distance.
The largest change was a major overhaul to our culling system. After a lot of late nights, we were able to greatly reduce the number of rooms, lights, physics objects, and other scene elements rendering at once across all performance levels. Physics and rendering now also use a unified culling system, which means physics objects should no longer visibly pop in separately from the rest of the world.
BEFORE
AFTER
We also added new graphics options that scale with quality presets, giving players more control over how the game runs on their system.
WARNING: There are some known issues with the Upscalers that we are investigating.
Upscaling support has also been updated, replacing DLSS 2 and adding newer options, including Native AA. Frame generation is not included yet, but we hope to add that soon.
DLSS 4 / 4.5
FSR 3.1 / 4.1
Framerate hitches from entities spawning and death sequences has been drastically reduced. Especially with Joey's transformation and death sequence.
Another major piece of feedback was about AI-generated content in the game. 0.8.4 includes a large pass of new handcrafted assets across multiple levels.
Many corkboard images have been replaced with new handmade images, including some in The Kidrooms that came from previous community fan art competitions. The posters in The Arcade section of The Playrooms have also been replaced with artwork from the winners of our latest Fan Art Contest.
We replaced several AI-generated intercom sounds and voices as well, and made major improvements to the spatial audio of the intercom speakers themselves so they feel more naturally placed in the environment.
The Chewtopia VHS tape has also been remade by hand. Special thanks to Class Wyatt for the incredible help.
There are many other smaller changes throughout the game too, including updates to posters, fast food menus, and other environmental details.
Controller support was another common issue players reported, especially when navigating menus.
In 0.8.4, we improved controller interaction and selection behavior in the inventory and settings menus, making both much easier to use without switching back to a mouse and keyboard.
We improved the look of the room, redesigned the slingshot, and repositioned it so it feels better to use. The slingshot itself has also been completely rewritten, making it feel much more responsive and physically accurate when aiming and firing.
It can now fit and shoot any physics object, and the room has been decorated with alternate ammunition and a few other details for players to experiment with.
The Churchrooms now have a new breaker room built specifically for the level, instead of reusing the breaker room from The Classrooms.
This should help the area feel more distinct and better match the atmosphere of The Churchrooms.
The hazard system has been reworked so hazards can now spawn in far more places throughout the game, instead of being limited to more rigid spawn setups.
Custom Mode also now includes options to enable or disable various hazards, giving players more control over the kind of run they want to create in any level.
As part of the inventory overhaul, VHS tapes are now much easier to identify and keep track of in your inventory.
VHS tapes are also no longer consumed when watched, so once you find one, you can keep it and replay it any time.
The Gangler now interacts with water more realistically. (Whispering Wyrm does as well)
Gangler also has new improved footstep sounds in water.
The Stink Pipes in The Playrooms have been improved. Previously, their hitboxes were much more punishing than they looked, while the smoke effect itself was barely visible.
They now bellow both proudly and justly.
Loot Spawning Improvements
Improved the look of TV Screens
Fixed Doll Sting Sound playing through doors
Fixed issue where screen could blink when walking through doorways sometimes
Rebalanced Joey Ragdoll
Fixed VSYNC Option
Optimized Mirrors
We’re also still hard at work on multiplayer, which continues to be one of the biggest things we’re building for The Classrooms.
On top of that, the next tape is just around the corner. Please look forward to it!
Thank you again to everyone who has reported issues, left feedback, made videos, posted reviews, or talked with us directly. This update exists because of that feedback, and we’ll keep using it to guide the game moving forward.
We've made some changes to the following entities that will take effect April 1st

Hello, The Classrooms players! We are excited to launch the beta of Endless Descent, a completely new way to experience the game. Unlike the linear story mode with predetermined routes and entities, Endless Descent Mode is built for endless replayability and unpredictable level transitions. This beta is a solo preview of the mode we plan to expand into multiplayer. Imagine jumping in with friends after school or work for a fresh game, where everything is random and not limited to any order!
Start in the ARC Lab, your safe central hub. There are plans for players to frequently come back here in the future for upgrades.
Levels connect in countless different ways. No set path exists after you initially drop from the hole in The Classrooms.
They spawn randomly per level. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes. Multiples of any entity can also spawn, so don't be surprised to encounter REAL armies of dolls. Difficulty stops increasing after reaching 100 floors.
Choose between 1 Life mode, where your save resets on death, or Infinite Lives mode, where you always respawn upon death and can freely continue playing.
Find them to unlock matching doors, with special loot and other surprises inside. More progression systems from story mode are coming later in development.
Discover the Vending Machine and Gumball Machine, which will appear behind locked doors. You can buy unlimited items or anomalous gumballs for temporary buffs!
Prepare to find yourself surrounded by darkness or engulfed in a flood, as any level can generate with a unique modifier! They become more common the deeper you go.
Use the Elevator to return to the ARC Lab, or give it an Elevator Pass (keycard) to head to a level of your choice.
Endless Descent Mode is in active development with big updates ahead, including the full integration of multiplayer. This beta lets you explore the foundation in single-player while we progress toward implementing co-op. Jump in and tell us what you think in our Discord, as your feedback will shape multiplayer!
WARNING: Endless Descent mode doesn't save when you Eject unless you are in the Arc Lab. But it does save every time you change levels.
Fixed Toggle Sprint Setting not visible in Controls tab
Fixed Joey not spawning in Poolrooms
Fixed Joey sinking into Poolrooms floor during belly rub
Prevented Joey from emoting while swimming
Improved Custom Mode icons

Hello, brave investigators of The Classrooms! The 0.7 "The Kidrooms" update is LIVE, and it’s our biggest yet! Step into the eerie, toy-strewn chaos of The Kidrooms, face the unpredictable Joey, and beware the creepy Arachnophone. This update is packed with new scares, refined gameplay, and a ton of polish to make your VHS-fueled nightmares even more intense. Ready to dive into the Superstructure’s latest twisted corner? Let’s break it down!
The Kidrooms is a brand-new procedurally generated level that’s equal parts nostalgic and unsettling. Picture a maze of colorful playhouses, oversized slingshots, and creepy toys, all steeped in that signature Classrooms liminal dread. Navigate through vents, dodge new puzzles, and uncover secrets in this warped playground. With diverse rooms and improved generation for smoother flow, The Kidrooms is a fresh, replayable terror-fest. Oh, and watch out for those orange balloons—they’re not just for show! 🎈
Say hello to Joey, the shape-shifting canine terror who’s anything but a good boy. This entity switches between a deceptively cute Small Dog and a ferocious Big Dog (and sometimes a Super version that’s OVER 9000!). Joey’s got new tricks:
Biscuit Distraction: Toss biscuits to calm him down—each one lowers his anger, but don’t expect him to stay friendly for long.
Vent Crawling: Joey now prowls through vents, making nowhere safe.
Dynamic Behavior: From sniffing sounds to glowing eyes and ragdoll physics, Joey’s animations and AI are next-level. He’ll chase, bark, and even get mad if you hit him with a gumball!
Joey’s kill cutscene is chilling, and his transformations pack a visual punch. Can you outsmart this furry fiend?
The Arachnophone is here to crank up the fear! This gramophone with a sinister twist scuttles around The Kidrooms, triggered when you get too close, and sent packing when you land a hit. Here’s what makes it tick:
Transforming Terror: After a 1-second delay, it morphs into a spider-like nightmare if you venture too near or hit it three times.
Sound Traps: Its alarm enrages Joey, so tread carefully.
Hiding Mechanics: Smack it to send it back into hiding, but don’t expect it to stay down for long.
With four Arachnophones lurking in The Kidrooms, you’ll need sharp reflexes and a steady hand to survive their eerie tunes.
Take charge of your survival with the new keybinds system! Customize controls for both keyboard and controller to suit your playstyle, whether you’re sprinting from Joey or aiming a slingshot. Rebind actions in the pause menu or main menu for a seamless, panic-free experience. Your fear, your rules!
Wield your arsenal like a pro with the revamped equipment system! Equip items like Glowsticks, Egg Timers, Deodorant, Stink Bombs, Dog Biscuits, and more, then use or swap them on the fly without opening your inventory. See your character’s hand gripping each item for extra immersion as you fend off horrors in The Kidrooms.
The Kidrooms sound more chilling than ever with our overhauled audio system! New sound effects heighten every creak and scuttle, while unique stings—like a jolt when you first spot the doll—spike the tension. Fearful chase music blares when danger’s near or Joey’s on your tail, keeping your pulse racing. Explore too long without a scare? Eerie exploration music sets in, lulling you into a false sense of safety. Every sound pulls you deeper into the nightmare!
We’ve cranked the immersion to 11 with these additions:
Slingshot Minigame
Piano Puzzle
Canine Death Whistle
We’ve squashed hundreds of bugs to make your experience seamless.
Patched crashes, lighting glitches, and tile generation errors.
Improved performance with optimized navmesh, ragdoll physics, and reduced hitches.
Enhanced entity navigation around corners and doorways for smoother pursuits.
Refined Bathrooms' level generation to prevent entities from getting stuck.
Boosted Gangler spawn reliability in Bathrooms for consistent scares.
Upgraded Screecho’s animations for more fluid and terrifying movements.
Polished player animations, camcorder model, and flashlight placement for a more immersive experience.
Your feedback shaped this update! From refining procedural generation to adding vents and keycards, we’ve listened to your posts on Discord and the The Classrooms Wiki. Keep sharing your thoughts via Discord or the Steam forums—we’re already planning more scares, including that multiplayer mode you’ve been asking for!
Multiplayer and Tape 8 are “Coming Soon,” and we’re not stopping there. Expect more entities, levels, and maybe a few surprises as we march toward the full release. Stay tuned, and don’t forget to update to 0.7 to explore The Kidrooms!
Grab your VHS camcorder, stock up on batteries, and survive the The Kidrooms—if you dare. Share your creepiest moments with us using #TheClassrooms, and let’s see who can outrun Joey and the Arachnophone!
Stay scared, The The Classrooms Team
