This morning at 10 a.m., Ten Innocent People officially launched. Lai Jing is worn out and on edge.
Let’s tally everything that went into it:
A 150,000-word script, seven distinct endings, puzzles, and countless self-conceived mechanics built from scratch.
The story follows the protagonist’s mission: journey to an ancient city where humanity has long lost its morality, and people’s bodies have begun to mutate. His task is to seek out virtuous souls and judge whether this city is still worth saving.
Three competing theories explain the city’s ruin:
The Way of Heaven holds that the absence of goodness is evil itself. No one loved this city, no one was willing to give or sacrifice. Over decades, the City of Waning Waters withered under the unyielding weight of Heaven’s natural order, descending into its current wretched state.
The Way of Righteousness warns never to overlook small evils in pursuit of grand virtue, nor to ignore nearby flaws while chasing distant ideals. The elite class’s reckless, uncompromising pursuit of perfection backfired, poisoning the hearts of its people—hence why no soul holds affection for these green mountains and clear rivers.
Others claim salvation was once within reach, yet certain people possessed lofty ambitions without matching talent. They fixated on trivial techniques while losing sight of core moral principles, mistaking superficial craft for true Dao. Their misrule only dragged the Qian Kingdom deeper into despair.
The game features environmental puzzles, resource management, verbal combat, a health point system, and hidden side quests. Players collect cryptic prophecies, weave them into the narrative, and decode their hidden meanings to track down the virtuous souls.
That said—knowing how to locate the good people is not the same as safely leading them out of the city.
Hidden side quests require players to spot concealed interactable buttons scattered across scenes, guided only by subtle hints in the main plot or prophecies. Lai Jing admits these secrets are intentionally hard to uncover, so each hidden branch rewards players with far more than exclusive story content: rewards range from rescuing one or two additional virtuous souls, to health-restoring consumables, and even pivotal artifacts capable of altering the game’s final endings entirely.
Ten Innocent People reads like an apocalyptic scroll painting: noble, upright souls have perished, lingering only as wandering ghosts. Pragmatic survivors stain their own reputations to blend into corrupt officials and common townsfolk, clinging to futile last-ditch resistance. The masses either flee or hide, pinning all hope on outside salvation; far more have grown accustomed to the abyss, no longer recognizing depravity as evil, merely ordinary daily life.
After sinking countless hours into my own playthrough, I can sum up my verdict on Ten Innocent People in one sentence:
This is a Xuanhuan Wuxia visual novel, where puzzle-solving is seamlessly woven into every thread of its narrative.
Ten Innocent People is a fantasy wuxia visual novel set in the Kingdom of Qian—a realm long swallowed by moral decay, where mortal flesh warps and twists into demonic monsters.
The protagonist receives a commission from a rebel army forged by all virtuous people across the land, tasked with conducting a final investigation into the Kingdom of Qian: to seek out ten truly good souls within its borders.
Should the protagonist fail to find them, the rebel force will unleash its overwhelming, unstoppable military might to annihilate this nation teetering on total corruption once and for all.
Beyond being a visual novel, Ten Innocent People features three distinct categories of puzzles.
Your core objective throughout Ten Innocent People is to locate ten virtuous souls. You do not need to make subjective moral judgments to progress. Instead, gather prophetic verses scattered across the story. Their true meanings will unfold gradually as the plot advances. We recommend making branching choices based on the hints hidden within these verses.
Players must make rational combat decisions based on dialogue scripts and scene artwork. Winning grants resources such as currency, experience points and items, while defeat will deplete your HP.
This is the most challenging category of the three puzzle types. Lai Jing has concealed hidden buttons within certain scenes. Players must spot visual oddities in the environment and locate these concealed controls to solve puzzles. The hardest riddles also require combining clues from the main plot.
Scene puzzles offer the most generous rewards in the game. Clearing them can unlock entire hidden side storylines, grant abundant restorative items, and even alter the game’s ending outright.
The playable demo of Ten Innocent People will reopen on July 6th.
