This update brings a big upgrade to the lighting model used in SUPER IMPOSSIBLE ROAD. The introduction of a volumetric lighting system brings more depth and nuance to the scene, setting the mood for each of the game’s locations. The underlying game engine, Unity, has been upgraded from v5.6.4 to 2018.2, bringing with it improved CPU and graphics performance and physics bugs fixes. Please keep an eye out for the bug where the track collision stops the vessel or sends it straight into the air - this should hopefully be fixed. The other major change for this update is a redesign of the loading screen. The tips shown on the loading screen now cycle through 40+ messages designed to help you become a better player. I'm happy to announce that this update includes a preview of the much anticipated Career mode, the single-player mode that will act as both tutorial and a series of challenges for players. Upon entering Career mode, you will see a map. Each icon represents a challenge, and as you complete each challenge, new challenges are unlocked. There are sometimes multiple challenges you may choose to progress, so choose another one if you get stuck. You can earn up to three stars on each challenge, but only one star is required to move past the challenge. I’m really excited to see what you think of Career Mode, and hope to integrate the feedback into the final version, so if you have comments to add, please drop by the Discord and leave a note in the #career channel. Three big gameplay changes in this update! Firstly, the boost system has been rewritten. As well as a higher top speed and faster acceleration, boost now happens in two stages. Stage 1 hits as soon as you boost, signified by a blue flame. Stage 2 kicks in after 1.5 seconds of boost, signified by a hotter orange flame. This stage really blows you back in your seat! If you’re good enough, you can even trigger Stage 2 straight away, by triggering your boost at the EXACT MOMENT you go through a gate, propelling you at top speed from the start. The second big change is the addition of gaps in the track. You’ll see these at the later sections of Survival and Time Gate mode, occasionally in Daily Track mode and in the new “Ultra” track complexity setting for Race mode. Track generation in general has also been improved to create a greater variety of track. The final changes are to Time Gate mode. The frames of the time gates are now deadly to the player, and hitting one will result in immediate disintegration, so you have to be REAL CAREFUL. On the plus side, you can now rescue yourself from Game Over by dropping through the time gate after the timer has hit zero. Epic Save! Vesula Prime, the first wormhole to be discovered and verified, is the backdrop for the next round of high stakes brinkmanship. The Vessel Racing Federation built its most powerful gravitational shielding to date for this track, along with creating some bespoke dampening technologies for other quantum effects. Whilst some have decried the VRF’s new location as reckless and irresponsible, others hope that new technologies it required will some day lead to the first successful Schwarzchild wormhole traversal. Game cameras are a very subjective topic, and one of the most requested features is a far camera mode, pulled back from the vessel. This update delivers on that request, and also adds a new first person camera mode for masochists. Kidding! But not really! First person mode is intense... If you’re playing on keyboard, hitting C cycles through all 3 camera modes - normal, far, and first person. If you’re playing on a controller, it’s mapped to one of the centre buttons, e.g. “back” on an Xbox 360 controller. Lots more changes and bug fixes in this version, as per usual, including a permanent invite to the Discord channel on the main menu for your convenience. Most noticeable is the new UI skin, with a sleeker, minimal future tech look. Readability has been enhanced. Some changes have been made to the flow of multiplayer, streamlining the experience by allowing you to choose between regional and worldwide games. Another key thing in this update is the new respawn effect. The camera now “rewinds” to the last checkpoint, which a.) shows new users what checkpoints actually do, b.) lets you know how far you’ve just zipped back up the track and most importantly c.) looks pretty cool. This update adds a whole host of effects which will help to sell the physical interactions in the game and inform the player, moment by moment, of what’s going on. When a vessel hits the track, you’ll see sparks. When a vessel is carving through the air, it will leave contrails. When boosting, you will see an energy tail. And finally, hitting the end of a race in first place triggers a celebratory shockwave for all to see. The UI also gets new FX. There are a bunch of new screen transition effects to make the front end slicker. One last, but important addition. With this update, the game has just gained support for ultra-wide screens, and better support for non-16:9 aspect ratios in general, including the ability to resize when windowed. Let’s start with scoring. We now assign points for finishing position - 12 points for a win, 1 point for 8th - and these carry over between rounds and add up. In another important change, the chances of being able to find a game increase hugely with this update. Previously, you could only join a game if the other players were still at the Race Room screen. With this update, you can join a match which is already in progress. You will be a spectator until the end of the round, and then you’ll join in on the next round. This means that you'll be able to chat to your fellow pilots and organise to meet up for games easily online, once the online features are available (very soon!). It won't replace all the standard Steam matchmaking stuff you would expect in a game like this, but it will be something extra for those who want to use it. I've created 4 channels to start with. #general, #matchmaking (not useful until I put out the first multiplayer release!), #dailytrack and #tips. If you have any ideas for names you would like to see, drop them in the comments below, and if they make the cut, they will be in the game. Obviously, there are going to have to be some ground rules:

• Fictional names only. No real people.
• Don't suggest your Steam name, or any other online aliases.
• 4-12 characters.
• Alphanumeric characters only, no emoji or excessive punctuation
• Prefer surnames over full names, e.g. Gonzalez is good, Andre Gonzalez bad
• No swears or slurs. Keep it safe for all audiences. Be good...
• No infringement of intellectual property. For example, the name Mad Max won't be accepted.
• Developer's decision is final!
• There's probably something I've missed...

So there you go, have at it in the comments below, and hopefully you will see something of yours in the final game. Keeping to the rules above will give you the best chance of making the cut, but please don't be too disappointed if I can't use yours. Kevin

Hi guys, Just a minor point release, but something that you might appreciate if you're having trouble with controller compatibility. I've upgraded the controller library that SUPER IMPOSSIBLE ROAD uses (Rewired) to the latest version, bringing with it compatibility for lots more controllers, for example the Nintendo Switch Joycons. I've exposed the settings for Rewired in the INI file. I would advise that you should only change these settings if you're having problems, but if you are then they may be just the help you need. This rolls up all the changes from the Beta branch, and as such I've disabled it for now to make sure we're all on the main release branch again. Full release notes here. Enjoy your weekend, Kevin

In this release, you can configure the input system using the game's INI file. This is handy if you just can't get your controllers to work with the game. Hi all, I've just opened up a beta branch for you all. From time to time, I'll need to test some experimental things out with a few of you before deploying to everyone, and that's what this branch is for. This time, we're testing out fresh controller compatibility code to sort out a couple of problems some of you have been having. To switch to the beta branch, do the following: 1.) Right-click SUPER IMPOSSIBLE ROAD in your Steam client 2.) Click Properties 3.) Click the Beta tab 4.) In the password field, type "duskotherbase" (without the quotes) 5.) Select the branch "beta" from the dropdown 6.) Run the game. You may have to wait for the download first. If you do this, you should see the version number showing as 0.16.1 BETA 1 on the title screen (not on the "What's New" screen). Let me know your experiences with the beta, and we can tweak some settings and go from there. Once we're happy, we can make these settings live to everyone. Kind Regards, Kevin

The game now interpolates physics, cameras, and any other dynamic effects to match your refresh rate, where previously position and rotation updates happened at 60hz regardless of frame rate. Those of you with high frame rate rigs and monitors (90fps, 160fps etc.) will get to see the full benefit of running at that speed, whilst those of you running a locked 60fps or below will also see much smoother gameplay. Smoother visuals aside, there are a whole host of quality-of-life improvements in this update. For more details, see the release notes, pinned to the top of the discussion board. Happy Cheating!

Hello all, Over the last little while, the community has done some brilliant work to expose a vulnerability in SUPER IMPOSSIBLE ROAD which meant that leaderboards could be hacked. To combat this, here's what's going to happen: 1.) At 12am tonight (Pacific time, or 8am GMT, 13th July 2017), all leaderboards will be reset. 2.) At around the same time, version 0.15.4 will be made live on Steam. This fixes the vulnerability. Resetting leaderboards is not something I take lightly, even in Early Access. However, when a vulnerability like this is found it is absolutely necessary to clear them straight away, so that the validity of the leaderboards is not in question. This is just a small part of a complete overhaul of the game’s UI. All the menus look spiffier, with new button graphics, menu animations, fonts, and layouts. This one concentrates on the visual and audio presentation side of things. Headlining the changes are an all-new HUD with a slicker, cleaner style which presents more information for the player. Keres and Rings of Cetea both see lighting and material improvements which bring the visual standard of the game up considerably. Did you know that up to now, the AI racers have been racing with one arm tied behind their backs? That’s right, ever since pitching and boosting were introduced during Early Access, no-one even told them how to use them, or even that they were there. Luckily for our automated friends, they’ve just spent a few weeks in boot camp learning the dark arts of the pitch and the boost, and they’re ready to up their game. And while they were at racing school, the AI has had some advanced lessons in choosing the right shortcuts, and improvising when things go wrong. All the better to cheat with. Hi all, The feedback loop and bug fixes for Daily Track mode continues, and this point release sees some streamlining and bug fixing. A much requested change - race countdowns (3..2..1..RACE) have been removed from Daily Track mode, meaning you get can straight back into the action after retrying. Less time wasted = more retries = better scores (or earlier bedtimes, you choose). Couple of bug fixes in here too. Firstly, leaderboards weren't showing for some Mac users. This is now fixed. Secondly, sometimes your ghost would desync - i.e. not follow what you did exactly. This one *should* be fixed, but please keep an eye on it and report if you see it. Hi all, A quick patch for the game, rolling in some of the feedback from the discussion on Daily Track mode and bug fixes. The most important change is the ability to view the leaderboards for the past daily tracks up to one week ago. This allows everyone to see who won the day without resorting to hitting refresh up until the rollover! At the same time, there are now options to switch the leaderboard view between global top scores, scores around the player, and friends. Let me take this chance to thank you all for your support and feedback during 2016. The game has come a long way since Early Access launch, and it's in no small way thanks to your help. Here's to next year! This update brings a new game mode - Daily Track, featuring a newly generated track every day, shared with everyone around the world. At the end of each day, we move on to another track and a fresh leaderboard. Another chance for glory! The rollover is 8am GMT, or 12am PST, in case you’re wondering. Once you’ve laid down at least one run, you will be racing against the ghost of your best run to date.
