It was just minding its own business near the beach and got caught in a vortex. Now it has to fight and escape a mob of monsters. Luckily, it is a powerhouse of magic and a born hoarder, its starting position on the Skigill allows it to get more Ski points from enemies dying with an elemental status. Then it can either profit from unspent Ski points with other perks, or make the most out of the power of the elements.
But that's not all, it also has the power for "omnidirectional flight" thanks to its tiny wings. That means that you can move in a direction and use directional weapons in another. This goes well with its fiery breath or the Gatling gun. It also comes, as usual, with its own new weapons to unlock in the meta progression tree, like the tornado or the talons.
I have reworked the mouse and the stick controls for the omnidirectional flight gameplay. I usually play with the keyboard, but I recommend using the mouse or stick controls for this character if you plan on using its omnidirectional flight ability.
Skigill actually has a story, and now you can experience it!
I focused on gameplay first, but I couldn't fully release Skigill without some context! When booting up the game, you will be shown a skippable cutscene. That is only the beginning of the story, you will have to earn the rest by beating the game. And I don't mean finishing a run alive, I mean beating the Skigill for real!
I think it has to do with this strange thing that appeared in the center of the main Skigill.
Also, the Skigill is full of these nasty creatures now, and they are more frequent in greater difficulty levels. They block important nodes, you may have to adapt your strategy.
If you think everything does not make sense after Master Key, that's normal. It's because Skigill takes place after Havenlocked, my next game yet to be released.
If you have too many Gill points and do not know what to do with them, here is something for you!
The meta progression tree was greatly extended, but the new nodes give lesser returns. The central nodes are untouched and as easily accessible as before, but you will have something to spend your points, even for marginal returns.
You might be wondering what the 1.0 means for Skigill. First, it means getting out of the early access!
Every point mentioned in the early access section of the Steam page was fulfilled, and even more:
3 characters
12 weapons
7 bosses
2 new standard enemies
1 new game mode
High-score timer in the main menu
Many other QoL and features
I think that with the latest additions, the game is in a good place and gives interesting gameplay choices. I will continue to update the game to improve the balance and fix bugs, and I do not rule out returning to Skigill to implement new pieces of content like new characters from future games, or a new game mode. But further content updates are not planned right now.
Talking about future games, check out my next game!
It's a top-down Zelda-like with the characters from Skigill! My efforts will be focused on this game starting from now. It's a bit early, and I have mostly been focused on the level design, so I don't have much to show yet.
Like Master Key, it will be full of secrets, and also use many exploration gimmicks! Like swapping between worlds, multiple paths of progression, colors, and dungeons woven into the overworld... And more, but I think you should discover it yourself once it's out.
Check the Kickstarter out if you want to help with the development! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/778295166/havenlocked
Thank you for playing Skigill, and have fun!
The dwarves have been trapped in this hellish place for ages, but one of them managed to break free to fight the horde, and he is dead set on rescuing his brothers in arms while doing so!
Open chests to free other dwarves and build your party of little guys!
Each of them has its strength: the miner will collect resources for you, the shieldbearer will protect you, the ranger will shoot at the foes, and the warrior will spin his axe!
Numbers will more than make up for the weakness of a tired old blacksmith! That and his giant sword.
And if you are not happy with your roll, the blacksmith can reforge the weapons... and the dwarves that come with them!
They also brought 4 new dwarven weapons to unlock on the meta progression skill tree.
Another mechanic comes with this update: the weapon passive stats! You can find them on the bottom right of the weapon cards. Upgrade the weapon to the level displayed to enjoy a passive stat increase.
Alone, they do not do much, but combined, they can turn into a powerhouse if you manage to get the right stats for your build!
And if you don't like them, reforge them with the blacksmith.
6 bosses now reside in the center of the Skigill, and on the outskirts of the randomized modes.
They are the guardians of 6 powerful perks that improve your weapons and will let you push your build further. Will you take the risk to challenge them?
The Ski are now golden if you use the accessibility color mode.
A new visual effect tells you when to press to enter endless mode.
The attraction orb weapon now inflicts the thunder status.
The healing bite attack rate was increased.
This new character is a one-of-a-kind automaton crafted from long-forgotten technology. It's huge and strong and is not afraid to take hits. Those who land a hit usually regret it deeply shortly after!
An unparalleled resistance compensates for its slowness. It also has access to both the red and blue parts of the tree, allowing it to easily use weapons with either affinity.
Speaking of which, 4 new weapons related to the big robot are next to it, unlockable in the meta progression tree! Some of them may hurt you, so beware! (unless...?)
Previously, the endless mode was a separate mode with 1-hour-long games, which were usually settled by the 30th minute. I think it lost its charm after the first few games, and the large number of enemies was causing performance issues. It was also available on the default skigill only.
Now, the endless mode is available with the 3 maps. Instead of being a test of endurance and patience, it tests how strong your build can be. Decide to leave with the vortex and keep all the gains, or bet you can reach the next exit point in 5 minutes, and lose some of your earnings if you can't!
Your survival time is also measured for each mode, character, and difficulty combination, allowing you to hone your skills and see how far you can push the builds.
I have received your reports about the performance issues, especially on higher difficulties and in the endless game mode. Part of it was caused by the magnetism perk. It used to inflict 30% of the magnetism stat on every enemy touched by the Ski (coin) before being collected by the player. Now the perk only inflicts increased damage to the first enemy and not every single one on the way.
Another part of the performance issues was caused by the enemy count; I made it so that you should die before performances become an issue.
Being able to tell what is going on is my main priority. I saw your feedback about not being able to see the enemies, and doubled the red outline around them.
Don't forget to activate the color mode and the minimized effects mode in the pause menu when there are too many enemies.
You can now toggle weapons off in the meta tree.
The sword's scaling was reduced by 25%.
The Prototype base weapon got an additional blue scaling.
General bug fixes.
It's out now in early access with a 30% discount!
For now, Skigill features 4 game modes:
Classic: a hand-made giant skill tree where each character starts on a different node, allowing each character to have its own builds and playstyles.
Randomized: a procedurally generated skill tree that you have to uncover and adapt as you go.
Tree: grow the tree yourself, shape it with your choices, and navigate among the nodes.
Endless: go for crazy builds and walk through the horde, wreaking havoc, once you master the game!
18 stats, 48 weapons, 39 perks, and 3 characters!
The sorcerer specializes in powerful elemental spells and effects.
The strongman returns from Master Key, and he is ready to throw punches.
The fox is also back and uses his trusty hookshot to collect resources.
Skigill has no text and leaves you to your own devices to figure things out!
New gamemodes, weapons, perks, and characters are soon to be added. Try the demo while it is still up for one last weekend.
If you like Zelda-likes, check out my previous game, Master Key. It's at a deep discount for the event!
