Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate news & patch notes

Hi Royals!

Well, I was self-indulgent and hid a funny interaction in the last patch, and now I reap the consequences. There were a few new bugs, and it also made some pre-existing bugs more noticeable.

So here's a new patch that fixes all that!

We also found out that there was an issue with our engine, where one of the libraries it uses would fail to do its job properly on computers with an ARM processor, resulting in random errors in the game's code. (I swear it has nothing to do with our code being bad -- that's a separate issue)

Changelog for v1.623:

• \ White pieces will no longer prioritize killing your black pieces over killing you if they have that chance.

• \ White pieces will now properly kill you instantly even if you are not a king.

• \ Player promotion now properly preserves jumps and other properties.

• \ Other black kings will no longer get killed instantly by white pieces who are not yet ready to move.

• \ Converting a pawn that is on the upmost row will now promote it instantly.

• \ Glueing the enemies' shoes now prevents them from moving immediately.

• \ Tentative fix for a bug where a stone could kill a black piece by breaking free of its metaphysical condition and hitting the victim through the 8th dimension, while not even being on the same square.

• \ Heirs no longer produce the "Spy executed!" message when killed by another piece.

• \ Fixed an issue where a black piece could get killed and still be selectable, resulting in a crash if you did select it.

• \ Fixed a couple visual and text issues on the codex.

• \ Updated the lua interpreter, so that the game would stop crashing randomly on certain systems. (not 100% sure but may have been exclusively on computers with ARM processors)

• \ Added a message that says "hold ALT to force aiming" at the bottom of the screen when hovering over other actions besides moving.

• \ Meeting with a spy no longer consumes its spy status, so that it can now still promote into a black piece afterwards.

Just a quick shout out for a new game coming out today: Enter the Chronosphere! Very much like Shotgun King, it's a turn-based action game, and very much like Shotgun King you will be dealing with placement and shot accuracy and various upgrades, but unlike Shotgun King, the levels are larger than the screen, and it's set in space, and the art is colorful and a bit trippy!

It's very important to us that when you get your butt handed to you by the game, you cannot put the blame on bugs. This new stability patch goes one more step towards achieving this.

This patch fixes the last of the issues that were reported to us on our Discord. If you find any more, please come on there and tell us about it so that we may fix it!

• \ Fixed a bug where if the pike-wielding apocalypse horseman killed a holoking, the game would go into an existential crisis.

• \ Unicorns and Sokoban rooks can no longer kill you by pushing you off the board's edge if you have Elusive.

• \ Throwing a Theocracized bishop at a rook while Castle is active will no longer confuse the game into crashing.

• \ Using Force-feeding when missing a grenade with the Attila will now properly load an additional shell anyway.

Here's another patch just in time for your regal weekend! This one fixes almost all the issues that were reported to us. We're just left with one tiny issue with the rebooting button in the modding interface, and one other issue where it seems that controller rumble may not work properly on Windows. We'll take care of both these issues next week!

Hi Royals,

Thank you so much for all the love on the Bad Company update! Somehow the game got its highest number of simultaneous players during the weekend, 4 years after its original release. That's crazy! We are so, so humbled.

We're still on the hunt for some of the more complex bugs that were reported, but we did manage to fix quite a few annoying ones, so we wanted to get this patch out of the way, and there will be another patch soon to fix what problems remain.

We also had a few issues with the MacOS build and also with SteamDeck controls when the update dropped, but I'm happy to say we already uploaded fixes for all these in the last few days. We do apologize about these issues happening in the first place, clearly we didn't make enough time to test both these platforms before the launch. A lesson for next time.

Dear Royals,

This month Shotgun King turns 4 years old. 4 years in which more than half a million of you got the game and made it the success it is.

We're eternally grateful. And what better way to express our gratitude than by giving you some more Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate? What better way, in fact, to celebrate Shotgun King’s 4th anniversary, than by inviting his few scattered remaining friends for a party?

It’s lonely at the top. Usually. Especially when you’re a despicable, selfish, and maniacal ruler who is intent on massacring his own realm. But no longer! There are always those who can see their own profit in working along with such rulers. Greedy little people with twisted principles, for whom the murder of others is frankly no big deal, if it means they get a share of the spoils. And so the Black King may now have some more pieces on his side thanks to some of the 30 new cards newly introduced to the game!

And did I mention a party? I was speaking of a raiding party of course! After the Black King overthrew the White King, the whole kingdom is now his to terrorize, so why would he resist the temptation? In the brand new Charnier mode, the Black King goes on a literal rampage and destroys village after village, spends their cinders on bonuses, and faces ever-growing resistance…

We also heard of a lost shotgun buried somewhere, and another one which may or may not be cursed.

And maybe some other things were reworked as well!

But why not invite your friends to celebrate too? The game is currently 50% off for Steam’s Daily Deal, along with all our other games! A very rare occurrence which we may not replicate before a long long while.

We also have some other exciting bundles, one with the amazing Sol Cesto which just had it's full release yesterday, and another with Below The Crown, another chess game which is also having its full release sometime soon. And we've heard rumors of a bundle with yet another upcoming game, Gambonanza, releasing on May 1st, certainly a game to look out for!

After quite a few weeks of closed beta, we're getting ready for release with a quick round of public beta!

v1.6 adds quite a lot of new content, and some rebalancing, so it's far from impossible that things would break here and there. Please let us know on our Discord! Some things we're particularly looking for: any bugs at all. does the game play well with a controller? on a Steam Deck? any problems on MacOS?

We're already aware of one visual bug where the "HD text" is broken on some computers, we'll be fixing this soon. We're also currently working on updating the various translations.

To join the beta, go into the game's properties in your Steam library, go to the "Beta" tab, and switch your beta branch to "public-beta v1.6".

Royals, today is a special day.

For years, you've asked us if the game would ever be on mobile. Some even justified their query, saying that they would simply really love to play the game while on the throne. And one had to admit, there's a beauty in that.

But honesty cuts both ways, and to be honest, we weren't too interested in porting the game onto mobile. We made Shotgun King with a custom engine that was built with PC in mind. Our friends at Headbang Club worked miracles and ported the game (and the engine) to consoles, but surely mobile was a whole other can of worms, right?

Well, yes, it was. But nevertheless, after the console port was done, Headbang Club asked us whether they should do a mobile port as well, and we were like... "You can do that??"

Dear reader, they could. They did!

It took about a year to get it all done, but here it is at last! Shotgun King is finally available on mobile, from Google Play for Android, and from the App Store for iOS. So that now, when you feel powerless to take a sh*t because you didn't eat enough fiber, you can blast some pixelated chess pieces with your royal shotgun and feel strong and victorious instead. But maybe try eating some more fibers too.

Benjamin has been working on some fresh new content for Shotgun King v1.6. Such delicacies as a new game mode, a new shotgun, and quite a few new cards are on the menu! These are coming soon to the beta branch, which you can opt into from the game's properties!

Now we all know that you're all very intelligent (perhaps more intelligent than players of other games, but we don't have the numbers) and you certainly never needed a tutorial in the first place, but nonetheless we have finally taken the time to fix the crash.

It's been a little while but we finally found some time to fix the issues with some of the languages on Steam Deck and MacOS. We sincerely apologize for the time it took to figure this one out. To be completely honest I'm still not sure what was wrong in the first place, but we managed to fix it.

Complete changelog:

• The game should no longer crashes on launch for some languages

• You can now select all languages independently of which platform you're on

2025 is turning out to be a year of experimentation with new ideas for us, with lots of new games being prepared for their Steam release, but we haven't forgotten about Shotgun King, and we're still wanting to make new content for it. We'll have news in 2026.

• The ratings for the guns are mostly level, which we appreciate, though it seems lots of your haven't gotten a chance to play the new guns we added in the massive update from last year yet!
• Over 85% of respondants are enjoying the game's balance as it is currently, which is nice too.
• 25% of you placed Karma in your top 3 white cards to be reworked, making it the least appreciated card overall. Interesting that all of you playing a homicidal king would hate karma so much.
• The Wand of Gust is noticeably less popular than all the other wands, might need a rework.
• The most anticipated additions to the game's content are new cards, followed by new shotguns, and then new effects. We're happy to say this aligns well with our plans.
• Etilon, who made the survey, has gotten your feedback, and apologizes for the excessive amount of time it took some of you to go through it.
• Someone sent a picture of a fish. Not sure why.

• Hot Wax is a falling-block puzzler about placing candles and then burning them down in chain-reactions.
• Smol Gods is a card game about maximizing synergies between small creatures.
• Fire & Brimstone is a tight little traditional roguelike about finding an artefact that may let you have friends.
• If Letters Had Pants, Would They Wear Them Like This? What About Numbers? What If They Has Small Shovels And They Dug Stuff Up To Put In A Museum? is a word game where you give letters pants to make stronger words.
• Serpentes: Anniversary Edition is a game of Snake with a twist.
• And finally Build The Sun is a minimalist god game about exploring the world, building settlements, getting ressources, and ultimately building the Sun.
