Steam Cloud support has been extended to macOS devices!

This should allow save data to sync between Windows and Mac. However, if you previously launched the game on both platforms while Steam Cloud was not syncing correctly, please be careful when starting the game after this update.

In rare cases, Steam may ask which save file you want to keep, or an older local save may overwrite your newer progress. If you played on multiple devices, we recommend checking the Steam Cloud sync prompt carefully and backing up your local save files before launching the game.

  • Issues with players getting softlocked at specific customers (especially after playing beta versions)

  • Issues with save data being incompatible with certain date formats, making it so players from certain regions couldn’t play the game (causing the Player to spawn without a boat)

  • Other minor save-related issues

• Corrected liked fish for the belted kingfishers

• Fixed the issue with being unable to immediately select or navigate the almanac on the controller

• Fixed issue with Quetzalcoatl’s sounds being audible even with the volume off

• Fixed the issue where the perfect prep achievement only triggered under very specific conditions.

• Fixed aspect ratio issue on ultra-wide monitors with level select.

• Fixed the pirate shirt in the chest as it was giving the pirate captain's body instead.

• Fixed the finishing base game dialogue and the Point Nemo legendary customer dialogue repeated.

• Fixed customers showing ??? instead of “None” when they don’t have a liked or disliked fish.

• Fixed the spring bait effect from occasionally clipping through the map when reeling in.

• Fixed active baits still having their cooldown continue when you reel back in.

First, we’d like to thank everyone for playing our game, and we’ve been absolutely blown away by the reception! We’ve noticed a few bugs being reported, so we did our best to try to address these ASAP.

Bug Fixes 🐛

• Disabled VSync as it possibly caused problems with stuttering/lag.

• Fixed an issue where players would not get the achievements for the World 2 Legendary Fish and Legendary Customer.

• Fixed an issue with the compass and sewing needle baits causing them to break the game’s UI.

• Fixed the issue where the Favourite Fish Finder bait could not be purchased.

• Fixed an issue where the Puzzle Gate in Point Nemo would remain permanently shut every dive after the one where it was unlocked.

• Fixed an issue where the Elite Explorer Achievement was unlocked too early after 100% only one level, rather than all of them.

• Fixed an issue where certain letters could not be typed when trying to rename the ship.

• Fixed an issue where the anchovy was missing from the almanac.

• Fixed an issue where a boss customer of the level in progression would always be followed by the same boss customer.

• Fixed a visual bug with the Razor Sturgeonfish.

We’re aware of a couple other issues as well, and we’ll try to resolve those as soon as possible.

We started with a tiny little game jam project, and now we’re releasing a full game that has reached more people than we ever imagined it would. Seeing so many players get excited about our weird little fish-scaling adventure feels completely surreal.

We honestly still can’t believe this is real, and we’re incredibly happy to finally share the full game with you!

From a game jam to the full Scale the Depths

What’s our story? Back in 2024, we took part in GMTK Game Jam. We had just 4 days - 96 h - to make something from scratch. The core loop of fishing and scaling turned out to be weirdly addictive. So addictive, in fact, that we ended up winning the jam.

What started as a tiny prototype somehow turned into the biggest project we’ve ever made ❤️

We’re back with a little development update. This time, we’re focusing on customization. We’ve added more ways to make this adventure feel like your own 😋

🛥️ New boats

In the full game, there’ll be a few different boats to choose from, and you can decorate each one and give it your own name.

👒 New cosmetics

We also added new cosmetics for your character. You can now change:

• headwear

• outfit

• robot head

Some of them are inspired by locations from the game, like the Scottish Tartan from Lake Loch Ness and the Astronaut outfit from Point Nemo.

We released a new update for Scale the Depths Demo (Version 2.0.0) for the upcoming STEAM Next Fest. 🎉

Look forward to a refreshed look and feel, along with a few surprises underwater! Just in case you want to go back to demo version 1.4.0, we have included a beta branch for it. (1.4.0 and older saves won't be compatible with this new demo)

New Changes 🆕

• Chinese Localization Available - You can change your language from the settings.

• UI Visuals Refreshed - UI overall has been enhanced with new visuals, including the boat HUD and Settings. ✨

• Reworked Save System - Your inventory, collectibles, and cosmetics will now be saved.

• Cosmetics System - Take a sneak peek at the new cosmetics system that will be available in the full game. We have included some fun hats in the demo to play around with. 🎩

• Discard All Fish - Added a button to allow you to clear your fishing inventory with the click of a button.

• Knife Movement QOL - Improved knife movement overall. You can also now move to the left without scaling the fish. 🔪

• Setting Menu Expanded - New settings are available, including language, display, and gameplay options.

• Improved Fish AI - All fish are now able to do calculus. 🤓

Right now, our main development focus is building new worlds for the full game. Each world will keep the core gameplay you know from the demo, but with a fresh vibe and new content to discover — new customers, new knives, and new fish, all themed to the location.

When will the game release?

🐟: The game is scheduled to release in the second quarter of 2026 (April - June)

How much will the game cost?

🐟: We're not sure yet. We're still trying to figure out a good price point for the game, so stay tuned!

How much content is in the demo?

🐟: Most people have taken about an hour of game time to dive into all the content included in the demo.

Are you aware of the copycats/clones/mobile versions of your game?

🐟: We're aware of a bunch of copycats that ripped our Itch.io game jam demo. At the moment, the game is only set to launch on Steam on PC, and any versions on mobile are not official. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do about these copycats at this point, but we hope to ultimately deliver a game that's leagues above all of these clones!

Will there be new worlds in the full game?

🐟: Yes! You can see some previews of world 2 on this steam post, as well as our official channels on Tiktok and more!

Will the game get translated to X language?

🐟: Localization for multiple languages will be included in the full game. The details will be announced at a later date.

What’s next?

The full version will include more worlds than just Lake Loch Ness - the one you already know so well from the demo. We’re currently working on several new biomes. Each of them keeps the core gameplay, but gives it a new look and twist:

• Different customers – new personalities and tastes

• Different knives – new tools for scaling and experimenting

• Different fish – new species to catch, prepare, and serve

So the loop stays familiar, but every world should feel like its own, distinct place.

Sneak peek: Swamp Outer Banks

We can reveal a bit more about the second biome, the Swamp! 🐊

It’s darker, muddier, and full of strange life that looks very different from what you’ve seen around Loch Ness. Below, you’ll find some work-in-progress visuals from this area – and we’d love to hear what you think!

We have now released Version 1.3.0 of the Scale the Depths Demo, featuring new control schemes for the hook when diving in the depths. These include Mouse and Inverted Controls, both of which can be changed in the Settings. Classic controls are still available as well. 🎮

Also, a big thank you to everyone who has played the demo so far. We were floored by the amount of support we have received and how many of you expressed how much you liked the game. We also greatly appreciated the feedback on the demo, helping us make the appropriate tweaks to create a game everyone can enjoy. This is our first major update since its humble beginnings as a game jam demo for GMTK last year. We rebuilt the game from the ground up with plans to upgrade it to a full-scale release.

We’ve added some brand new gameplay elements, adjusted the game’s balance, and upgraded the game’s visuals to look reel-y nice!

We have plans to add additional levels featuring brand-new locales, new gameplay mechanics, and of course, a lot more fish as we continue development. You can try out the game’s new demo for free right now!
