New Dino Toys

Hello! Well - it is true, we spend a lot of time working on our new game. But, but, we do like updating Parkasaurus once and a while! It's a funny thing - we never set out with the intention of Parkasaurus to be considered a cozy game, we really just wanted to make a unique looking game with cool mechanics! The time has come!

The water has a re-work because of the aquatic systems found in the DLC. We like to think the water looks much nicer, we hope you think so too!

New Dinosaurs

There are two main types of new Sea Monsters in the DLC! The two new class of Sea Monsters to Parkasaurus are aquatic and semiaquatic:

• Archelon
• Dunkleosteus
• Liopleurodon
• Ichthyosaurus

Above ground is one of the two new exhibits you can build for your Sea Monsters. 3 New Campaign Missions

We’re also excited to have 3 new campaign missions: Shipyard, Factory and Fire Party. In fact, Fire Party was one of the first missions I had always wanted to make for Parkasaurus but never could. Water Toys

Dinos love toys! We figured why not let all the dinosaurs enjoy playing with water toys. Therefore all our news toys can be enjoyed by dinos on land and monsters in the sea. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/48671575a23f7768165e7edefdfd79c3671d1553.gif

Hats

I suppose our logic about Water Toys also applies to Hats. Real talk – I find the 6 new hats so freakingly hilarious on the Theropods I had to make them available to all. Experimental Controller support

Finally! For those who like to lounge back and play Parkasaurus with a controller, now you can. Why do we call it “experimental”? Wellll, because there might be a few hiccups still. The cursor now becomes center screen locked which makes building and movement in the game much easier. In fact, I find myself faster in a lot of aspects of the game when using the controller {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/4b5f83f8f3291a227bd9a83ef21074bc34886944.png

Quality of Life

A few notable quality of life additions in this Sea Monsters update: UI goes to 125% Yes – we were aware for quite a while the UI could be difficult for some people to read. I just wanted to make a quick note here; if increasing UI size was easy we of course would have done it a long time ago. The reality is that for a game like ours, increasing UI is a really tough feature; languages break, UI breaks, and this requires weeks of testing on our part. Of course, we love our community and you’re all worth it! Just that there are only two of us so we sometimes can’t fix everything, or fix it right away. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/6f8c3c5be7ee02a290e2593aefaf23aaf118bc17.gif Reduced GPU Usage when V-Sync is off You either get this or you don’t. For most players this was a non-factor, but for the few that had V-Sync off the game really put stress on your poor machines. Fixed! Max people park 300 to 600 We had limited the number of guests in the park mainly because the game came to a crashing halt performance-wise if we went above the 300 number Well, we overhauled the animation system of our guests so everyone gets into the park. This very well might break the game in a way we have not thought of soooo.. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/7215959fe75d5ad6118ea39bf08b61866a25726f.png Improved Performance Remember when Parkasaurus became available on the Switch? (we are available on the Switch!). Well, we opened the hood of the game and cleaned up our wires a little which resulted in a nice performance boost for PC. Enjoy!

Below Ground Water Exhibits

Last time we chatted about above ground exhibits which are pretty cool. This time though, I wanted to discuss below ground exhibits! Why are these fun? Well – there is a bit more terrain modification required that I find fun! (although not necessary). Also – you can use pretty much whatever fence you desire since there is no requirement for a specialty fence to keep in water. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/37f2b55584a1d9d7f90495ea3b143b029636dab9.gif Another nice aspect of below water exhibits is the mix of land and water, such as below. Water Feeders

There is range of water feeders! Now, your semi-aquatic Sea Monsters still want to eat their water on the ground – so no need to throw those out. Still seems pretty crazy to us Parkasaurus is out on the Nintendo Switch. Yes, we did the port ourselves, and yes we like punishing ourselves. Above Ground Water Exhibits

Above ground water exhibits are really well suited for pure aquatic sea monsters. What we mean by above ground is just that – the water where your sea monster lives are above the ground. This requires a special fence to hold that water. You have the choice of a short wall or a tall wall to hold your water and both walls come with medium visibility and strength {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/216b8445f2ba10aea95b0b600c02c8b377360217.gif What happens if you use a normal fence? See? That isn’t going to work for your aquatic sea monsters. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/31320585/f7fd0ea8f82a457f9a3b9092a2d509cc8b0d88a1.gif

Water Toys!

Due to some technical hurdles we were not entirely sure if there would be water toys, and luckily we figured it out! Water toys float, bob, and can be carried away. Switch release 28th April!

New Biomes

See through wall

Veterinarian Helmets

Of course, you could not expect our veterinarians to fill up food containers and take care of the new sea monsters without an underwater breathing apparatus. Bringing Parkasaurus over was a challenge the two of us had always wanted to do ourselves. Playing the game on the Switch feels pretty fantastic – and I don’t think anyone else would have given the same love to the port as we did. Wait wait wait, so how does this relate to the PC/Steam version? Well, the controller support required for the Switch (a TON of work) is coming to Steam, along with some other cool tidbits I thought to talk about:

• Guest skeleton optimization
• Multi-threading NavMesh
• Controller Support

Fence helper

In the video, one can see two fence helpers. The blue bar that appears showing how the wall aligns is currently in the game. We now added a floating tile that helps the player not lose track of the cursor location. Guest skeleton optimization

Who knew the skeleton in the models of the guests took up so much computing power! Maybe some of you knew. Each guest had an entire animation skeleton that the game had to keep track of. Multiply this by 200, 300 guests, and that is a lot of wasted CPU! Now all our skeletal animation was converted to vertex animation so the GPU could help out. Multi-threading NavMesh

We’ve improved the rebuilding that occurs every time an object is placed in Parkasaurus. The game is broken up into regions that get activated more or less depending on the point of view of the player. Controller Support

Everyone said controller support was a lot of work. Did we listen? NO! Was it a lot of work? YES! Adding controller support to us meant more than just being able to play Parkasaurus with a controller – we wanted the experience to feel as good if not better than keyboard + mouse. We underestimated how complex the interactions are between all our UI windows that have to be solved with a controller. The video below looks simple, but we had to decide and work on the ordering opening/closing windows. Amazing Parks!

The two of us at Washbear often get so busy we forget to take a moment and smell the roses, ie. Truly appreciate the amazing parks our players have created. I think we’ll run a contest in November if there is interest in that. A great little food plaza on a plateau with really neat walk bridge across the mountain. https://i.imgur.com/mxz8OYT.jpeg Really enjoy overall layout of this one. The rest area 1/2 up the walkway to the top exhibit is a great idea for your guests, and walkways over the water is slick. https://i.imgur.com/TztqoaQ.jpeg I love the flow of this exhibit with the night sky and lanterns at night!

Controller Support

We had always hoped to get controller support into the game but were hesitant because the gameplay might just feel bad. Turns out, no! In fact, I almost prefer playing Parkasaurus now with the controller. I’m hoping we have this in for our next patch (date unknown!). Today is the 1 year anniversary (time flies like a pterodactyl) of Parkasaurus becoming a “full” game. As mentioned a while back, we are working on some new things, some Parkasaurus related, some not. I can’t wait to talk about all this, but not for a while. Just know that all your love and support has us working harder than ever. While writing this I looked back at some of our first posts, and am truly scared how far we came since then. Dinosaur Tycoon

Dinosaur Tycoon is a new challenge mode that has been added to the game. Dinosaur Tycoon requires you to achieve a Park Appeal of 50000 and have 300 guests. The game in this mode is also much more difficult, with higher prices for supplies and the needs of your dinosaurs being more demanding. There is an achievement associated with this challenge. New Dinosaurs

The Parkasaurus dino family has just become bigger! Each dino family in the game now has a new dinosaur joining the team. New dinos added to the game include:

• Diplodocus
• Euoplocephalus
• Coelophysis
• Pachycephalosaurus
• Sinoceratops
• Hesperosaurus

New Fences

We had always wanted to add new fences that could also serve as interesting decoration pieces within the park. This was the result; new fences!: Rock Fence The first fence ever created by humankind! Campaign Missions now in Custom Mode

There was a real interest in having the Campaign Missions as stand-alone maps where players could mess around and just enjoy certain map layouts. Color & UI Improvements

The saturation of the game was toned down to what we think is a much nicer look. In addition, we fixed some annoying UI issues, such as UI notices piling on top of each other. (I GET it, we’re out of food already Parkasaurus). https://i.imgur.com/okpMhoNm.png

Friends! The two of us that form Parkasaurus are going to be working on a new exciting little project, but won’t be able to talk about it till next year. Realistic Mode

Believe it or not, some players are not in love with our derpy dinos. For them – we have now added a REALISTIC toggle on the front menu to change your dinosaurs into a more “realistic” texture. (sorry, no feathers!) Undo Feature

Did you know a lot of tycoon simulations do not have an Undo option? Well, nothing is too good for our players! (seriously, tell other people about us…). For example, moving buildings cannot be undone. Sorry!

Performance

It seems that there was a lot of junk kicking under the hood of the game. We optimized, poured some potions together, and did some more optimization of our navigation mesh and animation system. Bugs

We fixed a LARGE number of bugs. One of the most notorious bugs that we fixed was terrain “popping” when placing items. This often led to a flattening or raising of terrain when undesired. Update 50 : Exhibit Themes

On occasion we become so busy that we forget to fully explain a new feature that has gone into the game – today we’re chatting Exhibit Themes. You will notice the Exhibit Pane has a new tab called Theme. Here you choose from a variety of Themes described below. Themes are separate from an exhibit Biome so there are a lot of different exhibit combinations that can be created. Each theme has a list of specific requirements in order to activate the theme’s bonuses. https://i.imgur.com/aGv9qjv.jpg Each Theme has a cool in game effect! Key Bindings

I had mentioned this in a previous update but just wanted to give a little more detail about how to change the key bindings for Parkasaurus. First, go find this file: C:\\Users\\”user”\\AppData\\LocalLow\\Washbear\\Parkasaurus\\Keys.ini The “user” is usually the name of your profile on the computer. From there you can open the Keys.ini and see the current game bindings. Feel free to change these as you please! Note:

• Ensure a key binding exists for only 1 control otherwise the game might get confused
• If you leave a binding blank, ie. "" the controls will revert to the game default

Update 48 : Week 1 Post Release

Hello friends! This last week since we released Parkasaurus 1.0 has been very hectic! Here is a summary of our week 1 features and fixes that were put in during the week and ARE ALL LIVE:

Ultrawide support

Key rebinding

Who are we to tell you that moving the camera up is “W”? You deserve freedom! Now you can rebind the main game controls. Find the rebind .ini file in your game directory, usually around: C:\\Users\user\\AppData\\LocalLow\\Washbear\\Parkasaurus\\Keys.ini

Bug fixes!

Oh, we didn’t catch all the bugs for the final release. Thanks to all of you who have sent in bugs via the in-game bug reporter! Helps so much! Some notable fixes:

• Fixed Huayangosaurus disappearing
• Fixed Teamwork ability not working properly
• Fixed Being able to delete rocket in final level
• Fixed Being able to hold down shift to drop multiple eggs
• Fixed Achelousaurus info in dinopedia
