It's finally here! A huge thank you to the Nevergrind community and the beta testers who helped us iron out all of the technical issues. We are so happy to see this game FINALLY complete its journey from its web-based roots to its final destination here on Steam (the best platform ever).
For those who are not aware, this game was originally a passion project that began back in September 2012. Back then, it was hosted on our own web domain. We worked on the game for a period of 2.5 years until its formal "release" in April 2015. While the game was always available to play, several key features were completed at that time. Eventually, as gaming culture largely moved away from web-based browser games, we made the choice to migrate Nevergrind to Steam.
Since the Steam version is single-player only, the web version had a few features that are not found here on Steam, such as a leaderboard and a "Armory-like" system to view friends' characters. Early in our planning, we decided that Nevergrind was principally a single-player game at its heart, so we opted to skip those online features.
Many optimizations and improvements were made for the Steam version of Nevergrind, but here are the major changes:
Support for 10 languages
Turbo mode (game speed control)
4K support
Hotkey customization
Hand-drawn avatars
Steam Cloud support! Load your character data from any computer!
If you notice a lot of structural similarities to classic EverQuest, there’s a great reason for that! Nevergrind actually began its life as an EQ-based fan game, utilizing static background images and cropped monster sprites directly from the MMO.
As the game grew in popularity and we realized we wanted to properly monetize and expand it, we made the critical decision to overhaul the graphics and lore into a completely unique, original universe. While the transition upset some of our earliest players at the time, it was a necessary evolution to protect the project and take it to the next level. Without making that hard choice to establish our own identity, Nevergrind certainly wouldn't exist here on Steam today!
Thank you all for your incredible support over the years. See you in Edenburg this Tuesday! ⚔️🎒
