Hello Realmsmiths,
Update v1.9.0 is here, bringing one of our biggest visual and atmosphere focused updates. This update introduces Photo Mode, new Sound Effects, the brand new Dark Land theme, 4K UI clarity improvements, and performance work for custom TileForge tiles.
Photo Mode is now available in Master of Realms.
You can now capture your maps from more cinematic angles, adjust your view, frame your scene, and create better screenshots directly inside the tool. Whether you are building a world map, a city layout, a dangerous lava region, or a dramatic fantasy landscape, Photo Mode gives you more control over how you present your creations.
This is especially useful for sharing maps with players, showing off your worldbuilding, preparing campaign visuals, or creating promotional screenshots of your realms.
We have added new sound effects to improve the overall feeling and atmosphere of the mapmaking experience.
These new sounds are designed to make the tool feel more responsive and immersive while you build. The goal is to make each action feel cleaner, more satisfying, and more connected to the world you are creating.
The new Dark Land theme has been added.
This theme focuses on dark fantasy, volcanic terrain, lava regions, ruined city structures, dangerous paths, and hostile landscapes. It is designed for demon lands, cursed realms, corrupted kingdoms, volcanic regions, underworld-inspired maps, and high-stakes campaign settings.
The Dark Land theme includes a large set of new base tiles and standalone assets.
City Wall: 16 variations
Wall Intersection: 19 variations
City Road: 18 variations
Forest Path: 15 variations
Lava Lakes: 52 variations
Lava River: 18 variations
City Ground: 1 variation
Ground: 1 variation
Total Dark Land base tile variations: 140
We have also added 50 standalone assets for the Dark Land theme, giving you more options to decorate, customize, and build stronger dark fantasy environments.
In total, the Dark Land content package includes 140 base tile variations and 50 standalone assets, giving mapmakers a much stronger toolkit for creating darker and more dangerous realms.
We have improved UI clarity for users playing on 4K monitors and larger screens.
Text, interface elements, and general readability should now feel clearer and easier to use across higher-resolution displays. This should make the overall building experience more comfortable, especially during longer mapmaking sessions.
We have implemented LOD generation for TileForge custom tiles.
This should help improve performance when working with custom tiles, especially in larger maps or more complex scenes. The goal is to make custom content smoother, more optimized, and easier to use as your maps grow in size and detail.
🚀 Performance Improvements
• Implemented custom asset LOD generation for improved performance (TileForge update will come later)
🎛️ UI
• Added a restricted Custom Asset Importer allowing up to 5 asset imports in the Demo version • Added a subscribed custom assets list to highlight Steam Workshop downloads and notify users of their associated categories
This update is focused on giving creators more control, more atmosphere, and more freedom when building their worlds.
We have added the first version of the Weather System inside the Viewbox.
This allows creators to bring more atmosphere and mood into their maps using environmental weather effects. Whether you are creating a dark battlefield, a cursed city, a misty valley, or a dramatic cinematic scene, the new weather tools help make your maps feel more alive.
What’s included:
Weather Effects added inside the Viewbox
Improved sky, lighting, and fog visuals
Better environmental control for map presentation
Effects optimization for smoother performance
Environmental Effects moved into a dedicated Viewbox tab
YouTube Weather System Demo:
One of the biggest additions in this update is the new Custom Asset Importer Tool.
Creators can now import their own models into Master of Realms and use them directly inside their maps. This is a major step toward making Master of Realms more flexible, more creator-friendly, and more useful for worldbuilders who want to use their own assets.
Supported formats include:
FBX
OBJ
GLB
GLTF
STL
DAE
This gives users much more freedom to expand their maps with personal assets, custom props, terrain objects, miniatures, buildings, and other 3D content.
What this means for creators:
Import your own 3D models
Use custom objects inside your maps
Expand beyond the default asset library
Build more personalized fantasy, modern, sci-fi, or custom settings
Prepare richer scenes for screenshots, exports, and campaign use
YouTube Custom Asset Import Demo:
We have improved the performance and memory efficiency of all Effects.
Effects are an important part of creating atmosphere, but they need to run smoothly without making the map-building experience heavy or unstable. In this update, we worked on optimizing Effects so users can get better visuals with improved performance.
Improved:
Effects performance
Effects memory efficiency
Overall stability of spawned effects
Better handling of visual effects inside maps
This is especially important as we continue improving larger maps, cinematic scenes, and environmental presentation tools.
This update also includes important bug fixes based on internal testing and community feedback.
Fixed:
Fixed all Effects spawning issues
Fixed camera collision while recording
Fixed lighting bugs
Fixed Sun brightness issues
Fixed reflection-related visual issues
These fixes should make recording, map presentation, and environmental setup more reliable.
We have made several UI and workflow improvements to make the experience smoother and easier to understand.
Added / Improved:
Added a separate Effects Quality setting
Added a new left panel UI for the Steam Workshop screen
Added black fade animation between mode switches for a smoother experience
Moved Environmental Effects to a separate Viewbox tab
Tweaked 2D Export selection fill color
Added hover highlight to 2D Export selection
These changes are small individually, but together they make the overall workflow feel cleaner and more polished.
We have also improved several visual systems to make maps look better during creation, screenshots, and recordings.
Improved:
Sky visuals
Lighting visuals
Fog visuals
Sun brightness
Reflection behavior
Environmental presentation
The goal is to make maps feel more atmospheric while avoiding extreme brightness, harsh reflections, or inconsistent lighting.
The Custom Asset Importer is a major new tool, and we will continue improving it based on your feedback.
Because imported 3D models can vary heavily in file size, material setup, polycount, scale, and optimization, some imported assets may require additional adjustment depending on the original model.
We will continue improving:
Custom asset handling
Import workflow clarity
Large asset performance
Material behavior
User guidance for supported file formats
Your feedback will help us make this tool stronger in future updates.
After v1.8.0, our focus will continue toward making Master of Realms more stable, more flexible, and more powerful for creators.
Our next focus areas include:
More Custom Asset Import improvements
Better optimization for large maps
More export workflow polish
More UI/UX improvements
Continued bug fixing and stability work
More tutorial-style videos for new users
Please try the new Weather System and Custom Asset Importer, and let us know what works well, what feels confusing, and what you want improved next.
Your feedback directly helps us decide what to polish, fix, and prioritize in future updates.
