We’re back with another monthly devlog and boy do we have quite a bit to talk about, so lets not delay and get right into it!

Our Kumitantei X Youtooz partnership passed the goal of 200 pledges to bring the Nyanus plushie to life! Thank you for all the support in making this a reality! I hope to share more information with you all as these get developed!

Takara and Reiji Skill Card Animation

We’re revealing Takara and Reiji’s skill card animations! I really love Takara’s animation as it really shows off her quirky personality in such a short animation. I can’t wait to show more new animations in future dev logs!

Bonus Scenes

Beginning with Episode 2, we're going to be adding unique Bonus Scenes with special requirements! Finding these will result in some fun additional character moments, usually with a quirky context. We wanted to share a peek at one of these you'll be able to discover, so here is the CG for the “Waitress Uniform” scene! 

Be careful in this place, the outfits are cute, but they've got a cherry pie there that'll kill ya.

First off, before I dive into the meat of the dev log, I want to say thank you for the support on the launch of Kumitantei and for all of you who left us a review! Also, I want to thank the bug reporters among you for  helping us improve the game. We couldn't've done this without your support. 

Monthly Dev Log

We want to keep everyone up to date on Episode 2 and beyond on development regarding Kumitantei. We really don’t want to remain silent and want to make sure we’re feeding y’all little tidbits of Kumitantei goodness. So, every month, I’ll write these dev logs to share behind the scenes development, highlight different community fan art, community events, and more!

Expanding Free Time

We’d always wanted there to be more to do during Free Time and for there to be more ways to bond with your favorite characters, so that’s something we’re focusing on with the development of Episode 2! There will be two new major features added to this part of the game.

One thing we’ve heard a lot of requests for is the ability to play Card Battle Debate outside of the Clinical Trial, both to try out new Skill Card strategies and see the unique animations for the characters who haven’t gotten to battle yet. We’re adding a new interaction to Free Time that will fulfil both of these! You’ll be able to spar with your favorites during Free Time and wager your tokens on who will win, high stakes with high rewards! 

We’ve also decided to bring the “Battle Demo” from the Kumitantei Demo Version over to the main game as a new Training Mode, with expansions to allow using every Skill Card and deck composition against any character you want! We hope these additions will make the Card Battle system more accessible and encourage trying out different strategies before the next Clinical Trial rolls around.

The Prize Corner will also be getting an expansion, including a major rebalancing to the Kitty Catcher and a brand new Prize Shop that will let you exchange tokens for uncommon gifts, upgrades for the Clinical Trial, and even unique Skill Cards! We’re excited to share more information about these gameplay improvements in the future, but for now, we’ll leave you with two never-before-seen Card Battle cut-in animations for Kaguya and Nisuke!

Thank you for playing Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter! A small update has been released, fixing some bugs found since the last update.

Patch Notes

• Added the option to rebind the button used to quickly leave a room without interacting with an exit

• If a Card Battle ends due to both players completely decking out and the Influence Gauge is positive, the game will now immediately progress to the Final Word phase instead of abruptly ending, with only the correct answer being present

• Adjusted the logic for how opponents in Card Battle Debates decide when to use Skill Cards

• Fixed an issue where the Soldier Skill Card could be used with an empty deck

• Fixed Tsubaki not appearing in Classroom 1-B when she should during Free Time

• Fixed a softlock that would occur during Card Battles when the opponent tries to use the Recollection Skill Card when it would result in drawing 0 cards

• Fixed a rare issue during Card Battles where the opponent could occasionally completely skip their turn instead of taking an action

• Fixed a visual issue where the Combo Timer would remain onscreen when transitioning to the Final Word phase of Card Battles

Patch Notes

• Direct3D 12 is now the default renderer. On platforms with additional launch options, Vulkan has been made as the secondary, optional option.

• Further optimization has been made in regards to rendering, significantly improving VRAM usage and framerate.

• When explaining Evidence Cards during the Card Battle tutorial in the Prologue, they are now highlighted in the player's hand to point them out.

• The hitbox of the bed in the Nurse's Office has been adjusted to make it easier to interact with the trash can.

• A door has been added in the Kitchen to make the exit of the room more apparent.

  • The exit hitbox on the left wall has been removed as well, making the oven easier to interact with.

• Adjusted Erika's position in the Prize Corner during Free Time to prevent issues where she would suddenly block the camera after spending time with Kaguya.

• Adjusted the description of the Evidence Card Nyanusofu's Testimony.

• Adjusted the balancing of some Card Battle Debates during the Clinical Trial.

• Updated the credits.

• Fixed an issue where dialogue choices would forcefully select the topmost option when confirming using left click.

• Fixed an error in the Edit Deck menu where the Suit icons did not animate smoothly.

• Fixed an issue where saving during the scene in the Cafeteria during night of the second day would permanently softlock that save file by breaking story progression. Save files affected by this bug will function as normal following the update.

• Fixed an issue where, during Skill Card animations, the card would appear fully white while using Direct3D 12.

• Fixed a minor issue where attempting to fast-forward while the results screen is being shown would play the effect despite doing nothing.

• Fixed multiple typos and errors across the script.

• Fixed multiple voice lines.

Hey Absolute Students,

We recently discovered that some of the foreign currency pricing was off from our intended numbers (This does not include USD). We have been working closely alongside Valve to get these issues fixed to make sure you can get the game at the correct price. For many currencies this decreased the pricing, but not all.

You can check the Kumitantei store page to check if the pricing did change for you.

What if I already bought Kumitantei and the game is cheaper now?

If you already bought Kumitantei and you would like to re-buy at the lower price, what you can do is request a refund through Steam and then rebuy Kumitantei at the lower price. The team at Valve is aware of this issue and are ready to help!

The 10% discount will still end on May 7th, so be sure to do it before then if you want to take advantage of our launch discount!

Patch Notes

• Fixed an issue where opening the Message Log while it is empty resulted in a freeze

• Fixed an issue where text in the Message Log sometimes did not match the actual text

• Fixed an issue where the jar of keys on the table in the Cafeteria was not removed from the room after the first day

• Fixed an issue during Free Time where, after spending time with a character, the camera would pull back and the characters present in the scene would reappear

• Fixed a visual error where the level initially present on the card when upgrading a Skill Card did not match the previous level of the card

• Fixed an issue in Card Battle Debates where some Skill Cards had their descriptions extend past the tooltip

• Fixed multiple typos

• Adjusted some voice lines

• Updated and fixed several issues regarding the Simplified Chinese localization

• Added the ability to fast forward through dialogue, mapped to Control and Right Bumper by default

• The censor from the Sensitive Language Filter option has been slightly adjusted

• Tutorial popups now prevent advancing for a brief amount of time to avoid situations where important information is accidentally skipped through mashing

• Following spending time with a character during Free Time, Himari is now transported to her dorm

• During Merlite and Cosmidors in the Clinical Trial, it is now possible to re-read the tutorial by pressing F1

• Removed fall damage in the Clinical Trial version of Merlite

• The redundant lives counter in the Clinical Trial version of Cosmidors is now hidden

• Increased the movement speed in Cosmidors by 20%

• During Card Battle Debates, the opponent's dialogue can no longer be interrupted by another line of dialogue

• Fixed an issue where entries in the Message Log would not update automatically when switching language in the middle of dialogue

• Fixed an issue in the Card Battle tutorial in the Prologue where a confirm input would occasionally double and play a card too early during the sequence or an Evidence Card could be played instead, resulting in a softlock

• Fixed an issue in the Kitty Catcher where the chance of missing a selected tile was lower than intended

• Fixed an issue where Shigure lost two Trust levels when given a Chicken Bucket instead of gaining two

• Fixed several issues where the note in the pause menu did not update when needing to return to Himari's Dorm

• Fixed an issue where dialogue blips from the "No Voices" setting would play during dialogue in a Card Battle despite the setting not being set

• Fixed an issue in Cosmidors where taking damage resulted in a permanent softlock

• Fixed an issue in Cosmidors where enemies would occasionally spawn without a letter

• Fixed several issues in Cosmidors and Merlite where sound effects did not play correctly

• Fixed an issue during the Closing Argument puzzle where mouse input took priority over directional inputs, resulting in behavior where changing selection would not work as expected

• Fixed an issue where the Closing Argument UI would break when running out of time, allowing dialogue to be advanced while solving the puzzle

• Many gameplay adjustments have been made to the Card Battle Boss Phase

  • Greatly reduced the amount of time the segment goes on for

  • Increased hand size during this segment from 5 to 7

  • The opponent now displays their Active Card and changes it at the start of each of their turns

  • Combos must be started and continued with the same rules as the normal phase: playing a card whose Suit beats the opponent's, or by matching the number of your previously played Debate Card. Continuing a Combo can only be done by matching the Suit of your previously played Debate Card

• Renamed the "Classic" voice option to "No Voices"

• Added more options to the Settings menu

  • Game Settings

    • Added an option to toggle the View Bobbing camera movement while walking

    • Added an option to censor sensitive language, which is enabled by default

  • Display Settings

    • Added an option to toggle the Film Grain effect to reduce eye strain

• The game now autosaves after spending time with a character during Free Time

• Significantly reduced the amount of VRAM the game uses at any given time

• Various rendering settings have been adjusted to improve performance on lower-end machines

• Added the ability to exit a room by pressing Backspace on keyboard or the East button on controller

  • Rooms can still be exited by interacting with the door or the far edges of the room

• Toggling UI during dialogue scenes can now be done during CGs

• A line during Erika's second Free Time Event has been adjusted and now has a unique voice line

• The startup music in Cosmidors no longer plays alongside "Ghost in the Joystick" during the Clinical Trial

• Updated the Simplified Chinese and Spanish localizations

• Fixed an issue where Erika's Free Time Events would autosave during the room transition, creating a permanently softlocked save file

• Fixed an issue where the currently equipped Skill Cards did not react to being leveled up

• Fixed an issue where the Filmmaker Skill Card would not activate its effect

• Fixed an issue where rerolling the Kitty Catcher boards would not visibly update the board

• Fixed the "Reroll" input prompt in the Kitty Catcher from not reacting to the Text Language setting

• Fixed an issue in the Prologue where mashing through the Storage Room scene would delay the camera moving to Shigure

• Fixed automatic language detection not working when the computer's language is set to Japanese

Thank you for playing Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter! A small update has been released, targeting a progression issue and many other bugs.

Patch Notes

• The "Toggle UI" feature during dialogue scenes now no longer removes screen filters, screen flashes, and other overlays.

• If the Clinical Trial is loaded from a save file with a checkpoint in the trial, the initial introduction scene is now skipped, progressing directly to the Trial Preparation menu. The remainder of this functionality is unchanged and the checkpoint is loaded upon selecting the "Start Trial" button.

• Several voice lines have been fixed to trim excess audio and adjust volume.

• Fixed the Kitchen's exit from not appearing if the room is re-entered after completion, resulting in a permanent progression lock. Save files affected by this bug will function as normal following the update.

• Fixed the logic for detecting whether or not the player has the demo version of the game for the feature allowing a player to skip to Episode 1.

• Fixed an issue where dialogue scenes could occasionally be advanced while the pause menu is opened.

• Fixed an issue during Free Time where backing out of the menu to give a character a Gift while playing on keyboard re-opened the menu a single time.

• Fixed an issue where the Conspiracy Theorist Skill Card did not reveal any cards in the opponent's hand.

• Fixed an issue in which the Simplified Chinese localization of the Card Battle tutorial displayed text formatting codes.

• Fixed the text of the Cosmidors tutorial during the Clinical Trial displaying the wrong buttons.

• Fixed the track "Ghost in the Joystick" being interrupted during arcade games in the Clinical Trial.

• The lighting of the Trial room has been slightly adjusted to alleviate some performance issues.

• Fixed an issue where some objects would display as having been interacted with despite never being interacted with.

• Fixed an issue in which the Card Battle tutorial would softlock and require exiting to the title screen.

• Fixed an issue in the Prologue where the Classroom 1-C door had the incorrect label.

• When exploring the second floor for the first time, Himari's dialogue that plays when completing the segment now plays in the Locker Room and Laundry Room.

• When exploring the second floor for the first time, Tsubaki can now only be interacted with once.

• More checkpoints have been added to the first Clinical Trial.

Hey class of '89, My name is Joseph and I’m the community manager for Akupara Games. I am happy to announce that Akupara Games is publishing Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter!

Hello everyone, Lina here! Today we've got a very big and important announcement to share regarding the future of Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter. We're not allowed to name names at the moment, but Kumitantei has received strong interest and an offer from a game publisher which we're excited to move ahead with! This will mean our team getting the support we need to make the game bigger and better, and will guarantee Kumitantei's completion! We're very pumped to share more info about this in the near future, but in the meantime, this does mean we'll be needing to delay Episode 1 until Early 2026 to ensure it's polished up to the standards of our new partners. Thank you for playing the Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter Demo! This update is a big milestone for the game, featuring a very talented voice cast in the Story Demo alongside plenty of fixes.

Story Demo

• Added an animated title card to the start and end of the Story Demo.

• Added voice acting to every dialogue scene.

• Added the ability to replay voice lines in the Message Log.

• Added Autoplay to dialogue. Pressing the Autoplay button toggles the feature, which will automatically continue dialogue after both the voice over and on-screen text writing are completed.

• Updated the song "Ghost in the Joystick".

• Several songs have been lowered in volume to accommodate for the new voice acting.

• Several updates have been made to the script to align with the new voice acting.

• The credits have been updated with voice credits, Kickstarter backer names, and the new song "House of Cards".

• The input guide for basic actions now always appears after regaining control and after entering a new room.

• The standard dialogue box is now slightly translucent to better show the environment and characters behind it.

• Mouse controls have been slightly adjusted to allow for smoother camera control.

• Significantly increased the player's run speed.

Other Changes

• "Voice Volume", "Voice Language", and "Text Language" have been added to the System Settings menu.

• Adjusted the default volume for each audio layer.

Fixes

• Fixed a missing scan-able object in Classroom 1-A
