Some new approaches to reigning in the gamestate in the long run. I had been previously trying to prevent floating-point math based desync. That never really worked that well. Now we're trying some bandaid fixes! The good news is that they're pretty good bandaids.
Texel Team buffer checksum & sync
Texel Population buffer checksum & sync
Host-Authoritative City Sync waves
These three sytems effectively force the host's version of the game onto all the clients whenever they fail a test. This will cause a little bit of rubber-banding - cities uncapturing themselves, etc, but it stops the game from drifting into a crazy desynced end state.
An old and annoying bug was that starting a new game after exiting an old one sometimes caused a white screen. Shutting down the connection between attempts worked for some people, but not others.
Tracked down some stale static data and references that were screwing up the game-scene entry point after a reload
One commonly requested feature was the ability to relaunch a multiplayer lobby with the same folks, without having to quit to menu and retype in all the codes. I never added this because of the above bug making it necessary to purge sessions. Now it works! The host just types in "RESTART" in the pause menu to start a new multiplayer session with all still-connected clients.
Thanks for putting up with my crappy multiplayer code guys, please report bugs to the discord

Some good news! Kiloton was just announced as a finalist in the 2026 Independent Games Festival! We are a nominee for Best Student Game. If you are a fellow game person and plan on coming to the GDC this march, you'll find Kiloton (and me) in the IGF section.
Anyhow, here are todays patch notes:
Armies now gain experience over time. As they gain experience, their speed, health, and damage all go up. This experience caps out at two minutes, where they have significant advantages over fresh conscripts. Experience can be seen visually as a team-colored tint. (Thanks Sock)
Army sizes have been tweaked! It used to be that a nation's maximum army count was something like 2% of their total population, meant to model cold-war army sizes. This rapidly becomes unrealistic in a total-war scenario, so I've made a tweak to the multipliers, and now it's closer to 10%. Each individual white square now represents about a division-sized military unit. (Thanks Sock)
Tweaked scenario to hopefully avoid the auto-lose condition that some players were experiencing
Added a bit more pizzazz to some of the tutorial text. It can always be more heavy handed.
You can now rebind the UI keys. They still default to the arrow keys, but by typing BIND in console you can see new commands have been added: UI_UP, UI_DOWN, UI_RIGHT, and UI_LEFT.
BIND UI_UP = P
for instance, will mean you now have to press the P key to move your UI selection up.
Research is now half as loud. It had been bugging me.
I've swapped out various sprites and materials throughout the game to reduce draw-calls. I didn't really know how any of this worked back in 2023 when half this code was written. It probably won't help framerates that much, but I'll be able to sleep at night. This will affect:
Nukes
Unit Spawn Effect
Missiles
ATAMS
Cities
Some other behind-the scenes stuff.
No changes, just giving it another plug. Join the discord for all questions, multiplayer shenanigans, feature requests, and especially bug reports.
Thanks for playing Kiloton! Until next time.

Our mapping contest has come to its conclusion! Congratulations to FireWarpSkill for the winning map ISLAND. All these levels will be available on the second page of the campaign.
Generally, the levels included at launch were pretty easy. Hopefully this batch will add some challenge!

One requested feature was LAN-based multiplayer. This should allow for you to host multiplayer games with friends on the same local internet connection, even if your actual internet speed is shoddy.
If you run into issues with LAN connectivity, check your firewall settings. If problems persist, @ me in the discord!
Sending Aid is now massively less effective at making a country like you, especially if they're larger than you, and especially if they want to invade you. It's more effective if they are being invaded.
This mostly gets rid of the 'spam aid to avoid being invaded' strategy, and makes it much more difficult to stabilize scenarios diplomatically.
Previously some users on high-end machines had issues with uncapped framerates causing insane power-draw even in menu scenes. I've added VSYNC and framerate settings to prevent this. It should apply the best settings automatically, but the options are available to you to tweak.
Updated unity version to address security vulnerability listed here.
Fixed Own-Missile Shootdowns
Fixed some typos

Hello Everyone!
Have you tried out the scenario editor? Made any cool custom scenarios recently?
Well...
That's right. Your maps are being drafted into the great patriotic war against... not enough maps! Millions will surely perish.
Hop into the discord, and send your maps to @spacemann for potential inclusion in a an upcoming Kiloton update. Come up with something clever for the name and description, and whatever name you'd like to be credited as. If your map is included in the update, you will receive a free kiloton steam key for a friend or two!
If you feel your map needs custom features like named countries or economy tweaks, those can be arranged for as well. I'd like to make the scenario editor a cool feature for the long term survival of the game.
Happy to talk about this, that, other feature requests, and especially bugfixes at: https://discord.gg/XKNfPupCq6
Happy end times!
