Hello hackmudders!
We’re in the final 5 days of the season-end event and the denizens of h a c k m u d l a n d need YOU!
If you are reading this post, your unrealized bits are likely part of the 2 million bits that are on the table this season-- that's 500 user slots!
If you log in today and realize bits into the economy, your contribution will be 4x as impactful towards the seasonal share as it was earlier in the season.
If 1/3rd of the people reading this log in and realize bits, that would put the seasonal share at 55%, and every corp in the community would get all rewards up to T3 keys with impossible tier/rarity combos!
So get in there and help the community!
Corp liaisons are waiting in the kiddie_pool for your shouts! If you are out of the kiddie_pool and haven't realized your bits, what are you even doing?? Go to corps.top and pick a few corps to fight over your unrealized bits, squeeze them for the best deal and then trade with their competitor for the lulz.
Really though, it doesn't matter how you decide to realize these bits-- getting them into the economy in the next 5 days creates a bunch of wild upgrades and funbucks and makes the game more exciting for everyone!
Congratulations, everyone, on an incredible ~* community event *~ The rOS event was created by @chat_ \ (yes it was 100% player-made!) Massive props to them for delivering a unique and challenging set of systems, puzzles, and lore! They are looking for your feedback via kernel_panic.survey if you have some to share. This collaborative puzzle-solving event saw 2 live raids in our voice channels, as well as a host of chatter in 0000 and events in the discord. Glams were earned and kernels were panic’d. Check out the recap! :::BEWARE! SPOILERS!:::
While the first solvers have already gotten their upgrade(s), the event will stay live until the end of november.
We love showcasing what players create. Player-driven content and events are what make hackmud’s community so powerful. @chat_ \ sez: "If you enjoyed this event, consider making a one-time donation to support hackmud's server costs":

Hey all-
A handful of fun stuff has happened over the last month that we want to share with you!
Our big focus right now is keeping hackmud healthy long-term by growing our supporter base. Their backing already helps keep things running, and as that group grows, it directly fuels new development.
Most of our players are visitors: people who drop in, explore a bit, and then drift off until the next time. That's exactly how hackmud is meant to be played. But we've noticed that a lot of visitors don't feel great about it, like they're "doing it wrong." The truth is, visitors are the lifeblood of the game-- and they're also the folks most likely to become supporters.
Our login screen is the first chance to welcome players back and set them up for a good visit. Until now, it didn't do much to make that experience feel rewarding. We've also learned that many players don't really think about how hackmud keeps running and growing, and so we want to celebrate the supporters who make it possible for everyone to keep playing.
We've also seen that a lot of players don't realize that a visiting-style relationship with hackmud is exactly what we want. The game is designed to be a place you can drop into, explore, and step away from. That rhythm of visiting is what keeps the world alive and interesting and also lets players bring what they've learned here back into the spaces they care about.
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/attention-economy-called-we-sent-voicemail-kyle-butcher-ivwce/
You'll now see persistent account achievements that highlight your lasting contributions to the world of hackmud-- no matter how long it's been since your last visit.
We've also added a section for major updates and community news, so returning players can quickly catch up on what's changed and what's happening right now.
There's now a list of our top supporters, celebrating some of the donors who make hackmud's ongoing development possible. And if you're wondering why my name's at the front of that list:
And finally, for returning players, we've added a short survey at comcode.survey. We genuinely don't know what brings people back or what makes a visit worthwhile and we'd love your help figuring that out.
As a non-profit (and just good business sense), we plan and review development on a quarterly cadence. Each quarter, our supporters get the first look at our roadmap and join us for a live Q&A session where we talk about progress, priorities, and upcoming goals. Here's this quarter's plan:

and the fun LLM summary of the Q&A (errors left for your entertainment):

We've been doing these sessions for a while, but starting this quarter, we're also making the rest of this year's plans publicly available:

In case you missed it, jumpsplat120 did an incredible writeup about their journey re-implementing the Lua language inside hackmud. It's a thoughtful, honest look at what it's like to explore the edges of the system and build something big within it.
https://www.jumpsplat120.com/lua_in_hackmud/
We've moved their post onto the Steam store page reviews section because we think it perfectly captures the spirit of hackmud: how playful curiosity can quietly turn into mastery.
We'll be at GeekGirlCon on November 8th and 9th in the gaming section, running demos and chatting about hackmud! If you're in town, come say hi, try the game, or just hang out.

Hey all!! We just finished up our very first hackmud season- season 0! Seasons are 2-month cycles of collaborative recruiting and training with rewards for player corporations which contribute to the effort. Every season ends with a 4xp event allowing players to overclock their contribution to the corps.share progress bar. (more info in the major update post)
We hit 10% on corps.share unlocking asset_class 0 and 1
asset_class 1 dropped some sweet k3ys (impossible-rarity combos, alch-able)
We saw ~1,250 unique logins: ~500 before the 4xp window (no season participation possible), ~500 during it and ~250 filtered out (pre kiddie pool / trade).
With only ~10% realizing, ~3,000,000 bits stayed unrealized. Ready to convert if those players log back in
After qubits dropped, Zez started advertising bitwashing in the kiddie_pool, chaos spiked with a spammer dubbed kiddie_pool_pooper, and then c00lestkats plus marto piled on with counter-spam until a treaty paused the noise. The truce is fragile: the pooper’s back, identity unknown, and there’s a 69BGC bounty for solid intel. Read the article in these screenshots, or run `informer.news {command: "read", story_id: "SMG31Y93A"}` in game.
The season has opened at 30%+ on corps.share due to returning players' existing realized bits.
Returning players who earned qubits and did not realize bits last season are donating them now, reaching account tier 1, and contributing to this season's percentage.
A handful of new corps formed and several climbed onto corps.top; recruiting players and soliciting donations, keeping pace with players who need help realizing their bits and keeping the percentage bar afloat.
We are currently in the trading window (first half of season) and players are creating corps and contributing to the share percentage to be able to exchange their share for hard assets
If the bar holds at this level into the next trading window, asset_class 3 unlocks: k3y_v2s of any rarity with any k3y values (including the rarest).
The community needs you: hop in, learn the basics, and contribute to the economy. Bring friends, start or join a corp, realize your bits, cash in for a hash or two, infiltrate, share intel, or just drop a meme. We’re excited to have you!

--we've got a one day sale for the deepest discount steam will let us run to help us understand the right price to sell the game at--
We have been making some major changes to hackmud, including a seasonal event that ends with huge loot potential! The playerbase needs help from new players like you! Starting out’s way easier now: the Marks system, priv_store, and the new `corps.share` challenge all help newcomers hit the ground running. The corp leaders are looking for new talent, come get your share!
this is a hasty post, because we wanted our major update post to be separate from the event!
"Every season ends with a dedicated HYPETRAIN-SPEEDRUN-NOOBHARVEST™ event. During the event duration, signing in counts your account's realized qubits as double toward the season share, and the qubit threshold for the progress bar is halved. So one active player can cover their own requirement plus cover three others’ percentages."
come join the memes, dreams and screams for the last week of our very first season!!
We are very excited to share some big changes we have made, moving us towards our grander vision of hackmud. Building off your feedback and our recent releases (the Marks system and priv_store), this update continues to improve our new player experience and also adds a deep system that makes high-level play richer.
Our primary goal continues to be a financially healthy game that pays for servers and ongoing development. Earlier this year, game sales, the in-game store, and monthly supporters became enough to cover our ongoing server costs. This is a huge milestone for us. Our next target is being able to fund development, allowing us to continue creating new features and systems.
We believe with a larger playerbase we will be able to earn enough to support ongoing development: if you love hackmud, tell a friend. If you wouldn’t, tell us why. Your feedback strongly shapes what we build next.
Without further ado...
The game now follows two-month long season cycles, with co-op and competitive goals organized through in-game corporations.
To support this structure, this release adds hidden marks and qubits, a new non-hidden mark, trade updates, a Corporation Shares & Dividends system, refinements to corps.top, and a season-ending event that closes the loop and sets up the next season.
Hidden Marks are achievements recorded in marks.protocol which are awarded when you take specific actions. We’ve added a lot of them (we’re not saying how many). Find them all!
Qubits (ⓠ) are a new resource added to the game. A potential currency. A quantum quantification of your knowledge. Earn them through discovering and understanding the edges of the systems in game.
Qubits remain latent until a corporation realizes them through a trade. Once realized, they become Bits in the corp's bit purse. Mutuality is mandatory. Choose your partners carefully.
You can now trade with corps and as a corp representative. When a trade sends Bits (⌽) to a corp, they land in a shared corp purse; admins can disburse from there. Before you use it, take a minute to audit who your corp admins are.
Use `trade_corp` to act on behalf of your corp. There are stackable fee reductions for corp representatives as well as for elite-level supporters.
Donations
Donations are trades which offer only bits from an individual into a corp. Donations do not have a fee. Qubits (ⓠ) are realized through donation. You can combine Qubits and Bits to reach the donation total; the corp only sees the final Bits amount, not how many qubits you used. Choose your partners carefully.
`corps.top` rankings are now sorted by qubits realized. The board shows more corporations, but there’s a floor to keep the signal clear: corps must realize a minimum amount of Qubits to appear on the list.
Also added: the list of admins for each corp, and sorting by GC networth via sort: "gc".
the plains of abeyance have been repurposed/repartitioned to facilitate new progress-based incentives, compatible with trust’s marks subsystem. the subversion has already manifested. bear witness with marks.available
This system rewards all corporations on corps.top at the end of the season. It encourages cooperation in getting new players up to speed and extracting their latent wealth. `corps.share` is the entry point.
Progress is shown with a percentage bar indicating what share of this season’s active players have hit their individual qubit-realization target.
At season’s end, eligible corps on corps.top unlock escalating, stackable dividend rewards based on the percentage. Entry-level dividends grant useful upgrades for script-writing and infiltration. Mid-tier dividends deliver sets of high-end upgrades suited to different proficiency tiers. Top-tier dividends include a chance at powerful, very rare upgrades. As corps work together - as well as against each other - everyone will receive the same share.
Every season ends with a dedicated HYPETRAIN-SPEEDRUN-NOOBHARVEST™ event. During the event duration, signing in counts your account's realized qubits as double toward the season share, and the qubit threshold for the progress bar is halved. So one active player can cover their own requirement plus cover three others’ percentages.
We're starting out with a BANG, as this season's end event is TOMORROW! This gives a lil time to play with the systems before next season's full season.
LEVELGATE kernel patch
We’re continuing to tune the balance between feeling dangerous, learning about danger, and being dangerous. New LEVELGATE policies let you set a minimum security level for scripts a user can run. Configure per-user with kernel.level_gate; temporarily bypass with kernel.level_bypass.
The default lowest security level is MIDSEC.
Recently active users have been set to NULLSEC. Check your level_gate settings on your users.
Trust-script security levels have been adjusted to fit this model.
marks.clone
Use marks.clone to copy earned Marks between users on the same account.
corps.hire rescind
Use corps.hire {rescind:true} to rescind outstanding corp invites.
These features were made possible by the Mann family, the JRBF Foundation, and players like you

If you love hackmud, consider becoming a supporter! We need your help! Just like the concept of kaizen, every dollar is one incremental step forward towards our goal of financial sustainability.
We also gave out a bunch of hackmud keys to our other friend organization, Dames4Games. They will be streaming hackmud this upcoming weekend as part of their month-long fundraising effort for their non-profit, which creates spaces where everyone feels valued and celebrated in the gaming world, highlighting the amazing contributions of women and femme-identifying individuals in the game industry. They're also looking for people to stream to fundraise for them, too! If you're a streamer and would like to sign up, that's rad! If you stream hackmud, we'll rally and all jump on your stream.
Otherwise, stay tuned for more community events, updates and news! We've got a bunch cookin' up!

A game jam event in support of Kaizen: A Factory Story by our friends at Coincidence (formerly Zachtronics) – Wishlist it now!
YO!
We're massive fans of the work of Zach Barth and his team, from the Zachtronics days to the new studio, Coincidence. We’ve always admired how their games make systems literacy fun-- a mission we share!
When I heard they were launching a new game while I was visiting Coincidence's new headquarters, I thought about ways that we could support them. We were already planning our next game jam, so I texted Zach to see how we could help, and we decided together that timing it just before their launch would be the most impactful way to rally support. The Coincidence team is deep in launch mode, but our goal is simple: point everyone we can to that wishlist button, and turn our players into game devs for a RAD launch weekend.
Throughout the event, we'll be streaming your jam games, talking hackmud, and hyping up their new title.
Kaizen is the Japanese concept of continuous improvement, and the belief that small, consistent efforts lead to incredible outcomes. This philosophy is the very core of hackmud’s RAD (Rapid Application Development) and FAFO (Flail About and Figure Out) mindset: start messy, build fast, iterate often, and get better every time.
This jam celebrates that spirit, and rewards everyone in the process.
Research and Development: STARTS RIGHT NOW Submission and voting Start: Friday, July 11 @ 18:00 UTC Submission and voting End: Monday, July 14 @ 18:00 UTC How It Works: Community-Wide Rewards
Every point earned unlocks limited-edition glams for the entire community.
MAKE new scripts and register them for the jam.
PLAY scripts created by other participants.
VOTE to encourage discovery of cool games and scripts!
GET BONUS REWARDS for being the first to play or vote on a script.
The more everyone participates, the better everyone’s rewards become!
Every point participants earn goes into a shared pool, unlocking new reward tiers. These glams are additive, meaning each tier we break through unlocks another unique glam for everyone's collection.
The final, most prestigious glam continues to upgrade with every point earned past the final goal. This ultimate reward will be engraved with permanent jam stats, turning it into a monument to our shared victory. This final glam will track things like: total participants, total points earned, and more.
TLDR; The hm_gamejam_v2: Kaizen starts NOW.
We're hosting it to celebrate the upcoming release of Kaizen: A Factory Story. Wishlist it today!
The theme is Kaizen (continuous improvement), the same RAD philosophy you use every time you play hackmud.

Hello hackmudders!
We've been hard at work hacking stuff together and are thrilled to announce a major update! The centerpiece is the official launch of our Original Soundtrack Vol. 2, crafted by the amazing Ryan Ike. These new tracks, which have been in the works since 2018, join the iconic soundscape created for OST 1 by the legendary Lena Raine.
This soundtrack is just one part of a major update that moves us closer to our grander vision for the game, deepens our investment in our community, and kicks off a surprise crossover event.
After a lot of hard work and years, we are jazzed that we have finally finished the second volume of the hackmud soundtrack. This update adds a whole bunch of new music to the game, with a heavy emphasis on hardline tracks. Alongside these new additions, we have also brought the original OST 1 hardline tracks back into the game, fully integrated with the new audio system.
The Wait Is Over™–Hot off the digital presses, the 1-800-bangerz-only Original Soundtrack Vol. 2 is now available for purchase on bandcamp! If you love how hard it goes as much as we do, you should definitely explore more of Ryan Ike's badass discog on his homepage. The new soundtrack is also available on all major streaming platforms.
At the same time, we're thrilled to announce that the legendary Original Soundtrack Vol. 1 by Lena Raine has been added to all major streaming platforms for the first time! You can also purchase it directly on bandcamp, and be sure to check out more of her iconic work on radicaldream.land.
We've integrated these new tracks directly into the game's environment, where you will experience them through gameplay, and tracks are tied to the difficulty of content.
For those who want more control over their audio experience, this update also adds cool new audio functionality inside the game. Individual tracks can be purchased with bits. Using the new `gui.tracks` command, you can customize your playlists. You can also assign your purchased hardline tracks to your loc using `users.config`, so other players will hear your track selections when they connect. It’s like jamming a mixtape into the boombox strapped to your loc's shoulder!
Get bits by purchasing them in the store or by trading GC and upgrades. Supporters get the best value: a bonus on all bits purchases and lower trade fees.
Get the Music: Play the game, find the OSTs on Bandcamp and your favorite Streaming Services: OST1 | OST2
The new soundtrack is a huge part of the game's identity. Alongside it, we want to share how we are aligning the game with its true identity: a retro-futurist RPG.
We took our latest big step with the marks system, and we continue today with the addition of priv_store. This acts as a personal safety deposit box for your GC, protecting up to 1B337MGC. The priv_store cannot be retired under any circumstances, so GC stored in your priv_store will be safe if you step away; come back anytime and you’ll have a nest-egg to get you started again.
This change is part of a larger philosophy. We believe PvP and multiplayer are the 'danger spice' of hackmud's roleplaying-- but right now, that spice is too spicy, especially for players just starting out or returning. To that end, we have also begun making balance and quality of life changes at the lower tiers to allow people to get into the game with less friction. Some of these changes have already gone live, and we will continue developing the game toward this vision with your support.
Try it out: Log in now to check out priv_store and experience the new balance changes for yourself.
It is Pride Month! hackmud is, and always will be, a queer-friendly community. To celebrate, we have been reaching out to underserved and underrepresented communities interested in tech, as well as engineers and professionals recently impacted by the current economic climate. At the time of this announcement, we have given away more than 200 free hackmud keys to awesome partners, local and global: Lambert House, transprogrammers, Hope Adongo School - Kenya, piratesoftware and more, and we are still going!
We also want to formally recognize the players who make this community great. We have created the helperbot_v2 role to say “THANKS” to those who consistently help others, and create a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds and skill levels. This quarter's awesome helperbot_v2s are: gear, jumpsplat120, marto, sudonym, and zez! Hit 'em with a 🎉 emoji when you see them.
Get Involved: If you know of a community or organization that we should connect with, please reach out in our discord, or on LinkedIn and let us know.
We're incredibly excited to announce our next event: an official hackmud game jam to support Coincidence (the artists formerly known as Zachtronics) with the launch of their new game, Kaizen: A Factory Story!
We’ve always been huge fans. The games they create strongly align with our own ComCODE mission, so we're hosting this jam right inside hackmud to channel that shared energy and build excitement for their launch.
Remember the goal of our jams: "hacking together experiences and other cool stuff." And while community voting can be sweet, the real win is seeing a flood of new creations for everyone to enjoy. The point is to encourage building, sharing, and collaborating.
Stay Tuned: Follow our social channels (discord, steam) for more information on dates, the theme, and how to participate!
We've been developing this game for a long time, and now, we're doing it as a non-profit: ComCODE. Supporting ComCODE directly fuels our mission and allows us to continue developing hackmud as a unique RPG that helps people gain skills which last a lifetime.
As a supporter, you’ll help secure the game’s future and unlock awesome in-game benefits. Supporters get a bonus on all bits purchases and enjoy reduced trade fees, making it easier to build your collection of cosmetics like tracks, titles and ascii hats.
Becoming a supporter is the best way to invest in its continued growth while getting more from the in-game economy. And since ComCODE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your monthly contributions may be tax-deductible. If your employer offers donation matching, talk to us; your company's contribution can also unlock supporter benefits for you!

Thank you for your incredible support over the years. We can't wait for you to log in, hear the new music, and explore everything we've added. As the influencers say, “Let us know what you think in the comments!”
