GIF PAL 3.1 is here!

This update brings a new summer feel, smoother GIF handling, better desktop snapping, safer 3.0 migration, and a set of quality-of-life fixes for everyday desktop use.

Summer Theme

- New seasonal summer polish

GIF Importing & Editing

- More reliable GIF drag-and-drop importing

- Better handling for high-resolution and high-frame GIFs

- Original GIF files are preserved more consistently

- Background removal now uses the correct original GIF source more reliably

- Editing should feel smoother with fewer stalls on larger GIFs

Desktop Snapping

- Improved snap-to-app behavior

- Better DPI and multi-monitor handling

- More accurate app-edge snapping

- Cleaner snap indicator alignment

- Improved behavior when apps move or change position

Performance & Focus

- Reduced RAM and CPU pressure for heavier GIFs

- Better behavior on lower-end systems

- Pet and overlay surfaces are adjusted to avoid stealing focus from fullscreen or borderless apps

- Smoother desktop use while games, videos, or other apps are open

Upgrade from 3.0

- Existing GIFs are migrated into the new 3.1 format

- Per-GIF settings are preserved where possible

- Last active GIF state is carried forward

- Character introduction state is repaired for existing users

- Important character data and settings are kept without intentionally deleting old files

The wait is finally over... Char is here!

This Valentine's Day, we are beyond excited to introduce a new heart to your desktop. Our major v3.0 update brings your companion to life. Char isn't just a static image; it is a living, breathing friend that grows with you.

What is New in v3.0?

• The Magical Hatching Your journey begins with a special egg. Watch it hatch in real-time right on your desktop and meet your new companion for the very first time.

• A Name of Your Own Give your pet a unique identity. The first thing Char asks for is a name—choose wisely, as it marks the start of your bond!

• Interactive Feeding Char gets hungry and thirsty! Use the new feeding system to give them treats and drinks. Watch their joy (and adorable animations) as they eat.

• Expressive Emotions Char reacts to you and their environment! Experience a wide range of active emotions including Love, Joy, Surprise , and even a little bit of Grumpiness if needs aren't met.

• Dynamic Movement & Physics Your pet is now fully mobile and aware of your screen boundaries.

- Walk & Run: Char explores your taskbar and windows actively.

- Jump & Fall: Watch them hop around or react to gravity realistically.

- Drag & Drop: You can pick Char up and drag them anywhere on your screen with fluid animations.

• Playful Activities Char loves to have fun! Look out for rare and adorable moments where they might start to dance or sing to brighten your day.

ADDED: Full Control We have added a Visibility Toggle in the Config Tab . You now have complete control to independently show or hide:

- Char Visibility: Toggle your pet on/off.

- GIF Visibility: Toggle your background GIFs on/off.

Perfect for when you need a clean workspace without closing the app!

This update focuses on a smoother startup experience, more reliable snapping on modern Windows setups, and a batch of DPI and taskbar fixes for desktop pets.

• Added an animated splash screen on startup with a neon logo and a visible loading progress bar

• Added physics mode so pets react to mouse interactions with realistic physics behavior

• Added gallery feature to browse and manage your GIF collection more easily

• Reworked the window snapping system so pets snap more smoothly to screen edges and detected windows

• Improved DPI scaling on single‑monitor setups so layout and pet position adjust instantly when changing Windows display scaling (100%–200%) without restarting the app

Improvements

• Upgraded taskbar detection with a multi‑layer system for more accurate pet positioning, including better support for auto‑hide taskbars and fullscreen applications

• Tuned platform handling for Windows 10 and 11, adjusting behavior based on system features while using fewer background resources

Fixes

• Fixed pet/window position sometimes being lost on single‑monitor setups after DPI changes

• Resolved several Qt6 DPI scaling conflicts and incorrect window border calculations at different scaling values

• Fixed cases where the pet could hide under the taskbar in fullscreen games and addressed invisible border issues on Windows 11 25H2

Known Limitations

• Multi‑monitor setups with different DPI scaling values are still not fully supported. GifPal works best on a single monitor, or on multiple monitors that all use the same scaling

• Windows 11 offers the most stable experience; some DPI‑related features may behave differently on older Windows 10 builds

Windows 10/11 Compatibility Improvements

- DPI Awareness: Native Qt 6 DPI handling with properly scaled UI elements and snap zones

- Multi-Monitor Support: Snap zones work on all monitors, including negative coordinates for secondary displays

- Window Tracking Reliability: Virtual desktop support with cloaked window detection and failure tolerance

- Performance Optimizations: Skip movement checks when minimized, efficient monitor detection

Bug Fixes

- Fixed Qt 6 + Windows API conflicts in DPI handling

- Resolved snap zones not working on secondary monitors with negative coordinates

- Fixed window tracking failures on virtual desktops and cloaked windows

- Improved failure tolerance for window tracking (up to 3 consecutive failures)

- Corrected DPI scaling for glow effects, particle margins, and snap thresholds

- Enhanced minimize/restore state detection for better performance
