Hello and welcome to the 12th final Behind the Doors!

If you’re new you can read the previous 11 posts, where we choose a door and cover its first concepts all the way through its final design. We were wondering what to do for the final post, because we really wanted to surprise all the readers. We couldn’t choose a final door to present to you, so instead we did the opposite - we are presenting you all the doors that never were - the old prototypes, the abandoned concepts and the hated abominations. Behind the Doors: Air Clash

Welcome to the 11th Behind the Doors!

Last week we finished the horror stories and today, to commemorate our wonderful journey, we’re reaching for the skies with a Fantasy Machine! This category was one of the harder ones to create, simply because of all the possibilities - we were very literal when we said “The sky’s the limit”. ːsteamhappyː When the creation of prototypes first began, we took the “Epic Fantasy Flying Machine” prompt and started brainstorming ideas around it.. for example a machine that has literal angel wings and a helicopter were just the tip of the iceberg. We expanded on previously abandoned concepts, such as a Mail Express machine and it even made the final cut! Air Clash on the other hand was a brand new concept, which took a liking to our designers and received multiple iterations. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/d04951af1c3206c803567f526f3bc34a9e96579c.png Disclaimer: The left prototype on the picture is separate from the two on the right. At first, the Air Clash level was thought to be an air balloon. And why wouldn’t it when one of the dreamiest air transportations from the past was a balloon. Of course, we wanted to create something with real roots, such as the balloon, but give it a fantasy twist, which would play with the concept of an epic flying machine. The next prototype (pictures in the middle and right) is the second iteration of the balloon, which was more of a mechanical airship concept rather than your typical “Around the world in 80 days” colorful hot air balloon. Developing these two ideas helped us escape from the narrow genre of “it’s either gonna be this or that” and we decided to experiment - combining the classic hot air balloon with the mechanical concepts of the second iteration proved useful, as we came up with the Gunship design. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/75304617be67553b636d43830a893ad10b38a90e.png It was an innovative idea for us, because we wanted to include some brand new mechanics into the level - since it was a gunship, of course it needed to have some form of artillery. Instead of adding missiles like the modern gunships, we instead drew inspiration from the “ship” - so we added cannons. Behind the Doors: Scary Spiders

Welcome puzzlers, Behind the Doors is a weekly blog that covers every nook and cranny of our favorite Doors.

We’ve already covered the Infernal Fire door with its wide range of haunted phenomena, next up was the Sanatorium, which is our take on creepy asylums. This week’s door Spooky Spiders, contrary to its name, was actually supposed to be the epitome of the Haunted House category. But let’s head back and take a look at our first designs and ideas..

Number 13

We’ll let you in on a little secret - none of our prototypes had any spiders! In fact, this door was supposed to be THE haunted house of this category.. None the wiser, we really wanted to play into the idea of a Karma house, which was full of dangers waiting to happen. Firstly, number 13 is the unluckiest number according to cultures from around the whole world. Hotels in Japan even removed the 13th floor from their elevators, because of the stigma around it. Secondly, there are a number of dangerous situations waiting to happen - the stovetop ready to light a fire, the hole being dug at the front of the house and the skeleton on the wall waiting to fall down and smash everything below it. Let’s say that this house was supposed to be the big accident.. that never happened. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/3beeb3e945a77b6d87df489be6cbae3550b112fe.png

The Aristocrat’s Library

This prototype also plays out the haunted house narrative, but this time it’s an old-time aristocrat’s fancy house with a library, marble bust and all that jazz. The hands coming out of the wardrobe proved to be quite spooky, when you imagine them slowly moving and tapping with long nails, but that wasn’t the highlight of the prototype. On the back, if you look closely, there is a rocking horse toy for children, which according to every single haunted movie, is a recipe for disaster in all its glory. As you can see by the weird walls and general shape of this door, it was neither finished, nor well-liked to be improved upon. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/e27dc7533d8e6382e20f0633b73070af9699cc59.png

The Final Look

So how exactly did the idea to add a giant spider come to be? Well, when you ask yourself what’s a creepy thing that people hate, the first three things that come to mind are spiders, spiders and maybe more spiders. This idea definitely wore the crown, but plenty more details were bringing the atmosphere its ominous feel. For example, the previous prototype was an aristocrat’s mansion and we decided to use these details to further improve our ideas. Behind the Doors: Sanatorium

Welcome newcomers and oldcomers alike! ːsteamhappyː

This is Behind the Doors, where we cover a new door every week and showcase its conception phase, as well as its final look. Today we will examine a new door you haven’t seen on twitch or in the demo! The Sanatorium is yet another creepy door, but don’t be fooled - it’s wildly different from its Infernal Fire relative. Let’s start from the beginning - one who reads these posts will correctly guess the beginning is the prototype. And oh my, is that an overwhelming prototype - you could use the paint bucket for some color and call it a day with all the stuff going on. We’ve got the wheelchair, the pushcart, the hospital light and the weird stabby thing, which for no reason at all will be called a stuffed sweater. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/ab948d71e6d3de9eff456532c0a763fb525aa660.png There was clearly a vision for this door and while the final look had some extra stuff included, the general concept remained the same. The Sanatorium, which obviously has nothing to do with sanatoriums, is just a psychiatric hospital presented to seem inviting, while in reality it’s far more sinister than you can imagine. And that was generally a well-known trope - American and British “asylums” were notorious in cinema and video games, spinning multiple horror stories and faux documentaries, which we based our Sanatorium on. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/adcb658e323352136b599ccac9e678b4575d2958.png We have to be honest here - this level is one of the hardest levels we’ve done. By this we mean the content that's included - puzzles and mechanics alike are a bit more intricate than what you might find in other doors. The reason is simply because this is one of the last levels you will play. Behind the Doors: Infernal Fire

Well, well, well.. Look who the cat dragged in! ːsteamhappyː

Welcome everyone to the newest, freshest and creepiest chapter in this Behind the Doors collection! Today we are waving Aloha to the tropical islands and saying Hello to the Haunted House category. And while the level we’ve chosen for you today is not a house, it is most definitely haunted. Infernal Fire is for sure one of the most recognizable levels out of all 58 - it got a sweet promo in the demo and is even the face of our marketing - it appears in logos, pictures, videos and everything in between! You might wonder why and the answer is very simple - it looks cool and it’s got that awesome plot twist you definitely did not expect. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/beffaa7c9e30a9ae6fcd56566502086e80bc5f71.png The level got its distinctive vibe from not one, but two separate prototypes. The first one seen here might let you on that the gameplay was to include a lot of birds, surprisingly. One thing is for sure - the big wooden bird was very much liked by the designers, so we developed some ideas around it - including adding a puzzle inside. The cage baby doll was an uncertain aspect and was assumed it would go away immediately - curiously, that wasn’t exactly the case. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/38270fae6da3880675cdfe389243119515662d59.png Now that we take a closer look at the second prototype - you might get the idea that we literally combined the pair. The weird ram head is there, the teddy bear plushie and the door frame also got influenced from this version. Interestingly, it wasn't one prototype which got developed over time, but two separate which were worked on independently as different levels. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/7891b792a324eb3a0c92dbb5cdcdce4b5a87c1cd.png The background of this level is a very simple one - some ruined buildings and creepy tree branches were the only necessities, given that the darkness of the level does it more justice than anything we could have added as prop. The dim lights are intentional, but without spoiling anything, you will see why you don’t have to up your monitor brightness for this one. Behind the Doors: The Lighthouse

Welcome to Behind the Doors once more!

We are going strong and continuing the tropical adventure with the second level of this category - The Lighthouse. And no, we don’t mean THAT William Dafoe and Robert Pattinson movie, which left us dazed and confused.. We mean the first level from the Doors: Paradox chapter! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/2725c2fb618c87c7df4593c58fd99ea6a7a2c73c.png

The Idea

In this specific prototype, we had an almost finished idea (which is rare ːsteamhappyː). We liked the lighthouse being in the tropical area, because of the general sea aesthetic we wanted to display. Thus, incorporating small but meaningful details such as palm trees here and there and the wooden, rustic vibe was doing us a great favor by filling up a lot of unused space. The winding staircase was generally well liked, although we wanted to have a cool transformation just like in most other doors.

Beginner-friendly

Let’s start from the beginning - this level had always been conceived as the mobile tutorial, which would introduce new players to our game. We deliberately say mobile, because currently it is just the first level, not the tutorial. Nevertheless, during prototyping the tutorial part was essential to this level, which is why it is mentioned. We wanted to include the simplest of mechanics and entertaining animations to ease in the new puzzlers into the world of Doors, which has its fair share of intriguing and sometimes even difficult puzzles. Well, we naturally tend to be as inclusive as possible, so that all our players can find their enjoyment in Doors. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/ead1eee28d9041ff86715958b2f29865d6b013df.gif

The Boulder

The idea of a transformation developed into this classic crushing boulder, which definitely wasn’t inspired by Indiana Jones. Plenty had changed from the conception all the way through to the finished look - instead of a winding path reaching from the bottom to the top, we divided the bottom and top staircase, in order to add the boulder mechanic. It got incorporated into the brick wall and added plenty of space on the top to include a few items and ANOTHER cool cutscene. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/2add69842fbc0de9d495d72c7e9c7dfe66fe9f49.png

Finished Look

There were many small details, which contributed greatly to the aesthetic of The Lighthouse. The background was intended to be a sunset, so including plenty of contrasting orange and blue colors fit perfectly. The small light particles on top of the weather vane were just adding a simple but effective touch to the rotating light beams signaling all kinds of ships, maybe even pirate ships?! All in all, the simplicity in levels is also what sometimes gives them their charm. A quick introduction to the Paradox chapter can engulf you into the magical world without even realizing. Behind the Doors: Pirate Bay

Welcome to Behind the Doors, where we write about all things Doors!

We are saying goodbye to our near and dear cyberpunk levels, in order to make space for the new chapter in this blog - say hello to the Tropical Island levels! For this category, we wanted it to feel very welcoming. We expressed vibrant colors, numerous animals and the backgrounds were made to emphasize the door, not clash with it. Today we are covering Pirate Bay - a well-known level to all the Demo players and streamers.

Our choice

We chose Pirate Bay to represent our game for a few reasons - firstly, we are really proud of it. Just like any other self-respecting studio, we have a few favorites from our arsenal of various creations and we are proud to say that Pirate Bay is one of them. Secondly, this was the only level from the Tropical Islands, which was a bit darker in both looks and feels. Since it was a pirate island full of not-so-hidden treasures, we also expressed moodiness through the starless night sky. One could even imagine you, the player, were trying to rob the pirates while they were sleeping or off on their misadventures. And lastly, we just think it’s a fun level to play. :)

The Artistic Process

In the picture below are visible a number of colored items - a bunch of weird donuts, a green stick, a pink stick and some skulls on the wall. You might think they are part of a big gameplay mechanic or a crazy, wild idea we had during the conception phase, but there is a little catch here. Our artists have developed a way to help the brainstorming process by incorporating random items and trinkets into the doors, which may or may not be liked by the designers, thus giving them reasons to agree or disagree with the prototypes presented. Explained simply, artists put as many nonsensical objects into concepts, because it helps with idea generation and creativity. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/1293f75b411de930d35ad84956886ad8fe0abafd.png

The Anchor

Expanding on the previous Doors chapters, we really wanted to impress with good progression of the door - how many cinematic cutscenes to include and how the door evolves throughout the level was essential. The hole under the anchor was decided to be kind of like a fishing spot for items or those arcade hook games, which (un)surprisingly never caught a single plushie. As it can be seen, the anchor served the purpose of being added inside a cutscene with the help of a trusty table getting shattered to pieces. The seahorse head was added later to resemble old time ship figure heads such as mermaids and dragons. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/84489dfd31882250bb51d667eaf90b37db1fa045.gif

The Platform

When the background was added, we had to reimagine the platforms of the whole category, because its previous design was already submerged in water. So we simply removed the water and bottom platform, so we can leave the two legs standing naturally on the shallow coast and make the debris from the table get submerged as the table gets destroyed. The seamless additions such as the waves slightly crashing on the stone bank and the fire light reflecting off of the gold coins were definitely making the level much more atmospheric than its mobile counterpart. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/f526bab2ca5fcdbcada6ee45f9df7dca9acd7ca2.png

The Treasure

Any Demo player would already know how the level ends.. and hey, if YOU haven't played Pirate Bay, what are you waiting for? The ending of this level has always been a fun one to watch for us. Being fans of plot twists and unexpected outcomes, blowing up the pirate treasure definitely felt out of the box while we were prototyping. Behind the Doors: Big Beats

Welcome to Behind the Doors - your favorite weekly blog about all things Doors!

Since we’ve been going strong with the cyberpunk doors, why not write up a third one for good measure? This time introducing Big Beats ready to groove up your day. This is the second music-themed door we created, the first one being Music Mystery (yes, very original) from Doors: Origins or most commonly known around here as the Piano. We took a somewhat different approach when we started designing the concept. Just because we already had a musical level did not mean we would try recreating those ideas and incorporating them into this door. Initially, the idea was to have somewhat of a disco or club, where we could include a dance party or those cool timing games, where you press arrows with your feet. It sounded really cool on paper, but it didn’t translate to success in reality. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/c3907b18ebf9f3448ec5ae2bb0e9e293ebdd6122.png A lot of the design has stayed similar throughout the brainstorming process. A quick thing to note, is that the platform has been the same for all four cyberpunk levels. It gives us good ground to work on (pun intended) and lets us be consistent, while also trying new stuff. One curiosity we removed totally was the little TV screen noticeable in the back face of the prototype. We had an idea to put a puzzle there, but as you will see later on, the puzzle chosen was far too big to fit inside such a small screen. Abandoned Nightclub of the future As you can see, the big cassette was always there - we didn’t really know what to do with it, but we knew it would be included in the gameplay one way or another. This version of Big Beats definitely looked more run down than usual. In fact, the whole concept revolved around creating an “abandoned nightclub of the future”. It was going to be your typical broken glass, trash everywhere disco, but later You, the player, would have turned it to a presentable and busy hangout spot for the cool kids in the block. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/b7678dd425f9151d53561b87e657634c2da1c00f.gif The Helper and The Dancefloor The Helper, as you might have already guessed, was this little helper robot you can see in the GIF above. We wanted to include a robot but we got sick of the humanoid C3PO-style machines and went for a little something along the lines of the vacuum cleaner bot. Its intention was to open up the dance floor once the player completes a certain gameplay mechanic we don’t wanna spoil yet. And so the rundown beaten club no one talked about was suddenly the talk of the town - the lights are shining, the music is blasting and the player is ready for the newest puzzle. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/58a25b01d4c403eacfe2e92caa587895009d8944.png The front design remained the same as the prototype, the difference was in the details we included around and into the door. The lanterns resemble Chinese paper lanterns, but with a sci-fi twist of adding an emissive material. The labels and writings were neon with faux scribbles, which were also made to resemble Japanese hieroglyphics. The puzzle we added is a timing-based click mechanic, which was originally inspired by the amazing rhythm game Osu! we are all big fans of. The prototype idea of a party dance game got transformed to the similar rhythm puzzle, with the exception that the dance floor is still a great place to bust some moves and have a good time. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/5e1b5058b980eace161dc4e92950a5cc7a977a4f.gif Thank You for reading this week’s Behind the Doors. Welcome, welcome and welcome back! Guess what everyone, today is another Cyberpunk level day!

We have yet another futuristic level on our hands, this time involving two robot criminals, a police precinct and plenty of fun puzzles to solve! Enjoy reading this week’s Behind the Doors level - Cyber Criminals ːsteamhappyː Let us start by saying that this level had MANY concepts. And when we say many, don’t take it lightly. A total of three different door concepts had to be mashed together in order to create a prototype we could work with. The ideas were changing and shifting depending on where we wanted to go with the concept, so you could say we definitely took our time with this one. Concept №1 The first concept was the most far off from the final design. And it only makes sense to have a very sketchy draft at first, we weren’t the first to work on a single instance for weeks without reaching a desirable outcome. Without beating around the bush too much, the first concept involved a woman in a cryopod. By all accounts, this idea sounds both intriguing and like it could have decent gameplay. Was she a criminal or maybe some cyberpunk superhero? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/252d0e8efb39f87d5652535a1586b0fc329312c4.png The answer, naturally, was that she was.. thrown in the bin with all the other concepts. No surprise there, but at least we liked the front face of the door - it was boxy, a lot of wires, cables and unexplained circuitry so it fit right into the vibe of the cyberpunk future. Concept №2 So, moving onto concept number two. This time we had to take inspiration from somewhere and instead of looking outward towards the numerous media and art, we decided to get inspired by a previous level of ours. The idea was to make a “building” with a flying car parked inside it. Sound familiar? Well that’s because the Getaway Garage level (from Doors: Origins) had a broken down car you had to fix. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/bcadec76c17ac4aae5e32cd3aa210c01a4d05667.png Although we liked the idea of a flying car, the space it was taking inside the diorama was not justified for the gameplay we had planned for it. We had to improvise, adapt and overcome in order to reach a reasonable conclusion for the car. Concept №3 And that’s how concept three was born. One look is enough to understand where we were going with this - it was now a Police station and the flying car issue was also resolved. A vertically parked car was taking up waaay less space than one parked horizontally. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/33c581662ec1487bc5c3f0878f56d552bef815fc.png You might wonder why we turned the house/building/garage into a precinct. Well, the car was never thought to be more than just a random flying car, but giving the level a theme with the police car and jailhouse was definitely the direction we had been looking for. Seeing it in prototype was the little push that sprung all the ideas about robots, criminals and police chases flying all around the room. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/2e63228372abdd7530dfd83941c537ea8cd3ff4c.gif In general, the final design was finished right after we had the gameplay covered, but our artists took it a step further by adding a dark and gloomy atmosphere to the brightly contrasting door. Behind the Doors: Food Fight

Welcome to the third Behind the Doors, everyone!

We have important news today - the Origins posts have officially concluded. We are moving onto the Paradox chapter, where we will cover more than 8 unique doors and concepts! Thinking long and hard which should be the first door to include in our final and favorite chapter.. the answer was quite obvious! The Cyberpunk category was the first conceptualized idea and Food Fight was naturally one of the first levels to see the light of day. Mind you, when we say Food Fight, one must take into account the level barely had a concept, let alone a name and general direction. At first, Food Fight was the “Sushi level” as we liked to call it. In fact, quite a lot of levels kept their original codenames in the circles of our studio. Inspirations

On the screenshot you can see two faces of the same door. Left one is the front, right one is the back. At first, the level was inspired by the Japanese street food shops on the sides of the busy pedestrian streets. Typically they consisted of stools in front of a long wooden counter, where people could have a nice bowl of ramen on their way home. Our prototype combined the style of Japanese stalls mixed in with some western chair influence and the cyberpunk neon dragon logo on top.

Sushi

Before we get to the meaty part, what’s your favorite sushi? According to our prior research, the most popular sushi differs depending on the country. In Japan, most people enjoy plain sushi with their choice of fish (most often Tuna). However, in the USA people prefer over-the-top sushi with more than 5 ingredients or as we like to call it “flavor bomb”. The one thing we found, that connects both parties, is a nice, fresh avocado. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/eb43f9382601cfbbb0c85e16746cfe5e57fa93e0.gif So naturally, the sushi you make in the level is a classic combo of fish and avo accompanied by the fun minigame of assembling it correctly. Cat vs Drone

The drone didn’t really have a purpose at that point in development. We were jumping back and forth between ideas, wondering which one would fit best with the cyberpunk theme. The killer drone idea died out as fast as it was suggested, so all that was left was to repeat the process. Who would’ve thought a cat would be the saving grace of Food Fight? Behind the Doors: Valley of Kings

It’s Tuesday once more, which means it’s Behind the Doors time!

Welcome back everyone to the second post, this time featuring a long lost ruin forgotten by time.. Valley of Kings. And while you may not be familiar with this specific door, you can watch your favorite streamers play it exclusively right now. We present to you Valley of Kings, a level from the Ancient Ruins category. “A little magic can take you a long way.“ Roald Dahl Fun fact: Valley of Kings derives its name from the Valley of Thracian Rulers in Bulgaria, where our studio is based. Well, we are based in Sofia, not the actual Valley.. In this level, the iterative process was King and our team had the task of brainstorming ideas based on the already made prototype. The process of our 3D artist creating a prototype to having a finished level design is a strenuous one highly dependent on the imagination and teamwork of everyone involved… but that might be a story for another time... {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/84d7fa12df99c9385f1643b97ecb89af99dc69dc.png

"We want a level with ruins"

The first prototype on the left shows the literal representation of “We want a level with ruins”. And yes you guessed it right, it didn’t work out so well. As a whole, the prototype seemed empty, barren almost. The frame of the door was crumbling, it seemed like the only thing keeping it together was the door blocker, which in its distinctive style seemed out of place. The statues looked cool, that’s for sure. Even though they were simple placeholders, the team needed a direction and the statues were definitely the right one.

"The Intermediary"

Moving on to prototype number two (center) you will notice there is one thing missing - the crumbling door frame is gone and in its place is an intricate frame design with circular symbols, which defies the laws of gravity. Needless to say, it didn’t make the cut. The statues are now two identical hooded figures holding swords - simple and yet very effective at helping the team come up with original ideas.

"And the winner is.."

Prototype number three (right) proved to be the winning design in the race. After the second iteration the team felt satisfied with the placement and overall silhouette of the door. At that point, the details started going into their respective places - where to put the puzzles we chose and which mechanics fit into the general aesthetic of the level and category. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/6681b0577b1a2c6b3c7f3964d2ab9422f91b0ff8.png

The final design of Valley of Kings was inspired by a few ideas.

Firstly, we included a runic cipher seen in the steps below the door. The actual runes were a mixture of Elder Futhark, Proto-Bulgarian and Anglo-Saxon writings found in real-life locations around the world. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/41617316/795e521a1032154e60a6aefb57913df97baf58e6.gif Secondly, the magical blue crystal and its interactions were inspired by tabletop games and fantasy art designs. Without spoiling the level too much, we can safely say that an unexpected and beautiful twist should be on your radar when you press Play. And finally, the winter scenery. Winter is a big part of this category as you will see from both this level and Frozen Fate. We want to present a sense of desolation with these doors - they were forgotten by both time and man.
