Hey everyone,
We’re bringing some heavy news today.
tl;dr Development of Die For The Lich has spun out into something much larger than we had originally accounted for. The time and money we've put into the game has been a strain financially, as well as personally. It feels like the 2 of us haven't had a non-development related conversation in 18 months, which is difficult for 2 brothers who rarely get to see each other in person. We need time to rest, reconnect and to evaluate what comes next. We are incredibly sorry to put our fans in this position, and cannot thank you enough for your support. Hopefully you can empathize with our need to recharge, and that you will still be here when we are ready to return to development!
We’ve loved working on this game, but after a year and a half of development, it has finally taken a toll. Working on this game for this long was never the plan which is often the case in game development, but that’s not an excuse. We hoped to release around this time, but with how much work is still left, it’s simply not possible.
When we first started working on this game, we were just happy to collaborate and make a small dice-rolling game about fighting undead creatures. As development continued, the game grew, and eventually we secured funding to bring it to Early Access, which was a huge milestone for us.
As the scope expanded, so did the goals and expectations, but our mindset remained the same: it was still the small dice-rolling game to us. In the long run, that mismatch hurt us. In hindsight, we should have kept development shorter and treated the project as a learning experience in project and expectation management, rather than trying to turn it into a complex, highly balanced game.
We had hoped that Early Access would bring in enough support to carry the game forward, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. We invested a significant amount of time, our own money, and even brought in a publisher to give the project the best chance possible. But in the end, we just couldn’t make the financial side of things work.
At a certain point, we had to be honest with ourselves, Die for the Lich is not a self sustaining project. While we found an amazing niche community along the way, the game didn’t reach a wider audience in a way that would allow us to continue development without worrying about how to pay bills next quarter.
We’re incredibly happy that people enjoyed the game and still play it daily to earn that crown on Discord. Seeing people share ideas and contribute to development has been the highlight of this entire journey, and we truly cannot thank you enough for that.
With all that said, we will be moving on to new projects for now - likely working apart with new collaborators in the near future. And of course, our goal is still to finish DFTL in the future. We don’t know when or how yet, but we do intend to complete it one way or another. It would be very awkward meeting Charon if we didn’t finish it first.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supported us, played the game, shared feedback, or simply followed along. It truly means a lot for a strange game like DFTL that never quite fit into a box.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us and hope you understand ❤️
Keep on rolling!

Check out this news post with EVERYTHING related to this year's 2 Left Thumbs sale!
Follow 2 Left Thumbs on social media to stay up-to-date on all the latest games and news. 👇
We have a new boss that will randomly spawn instead of Vetala in Act 2.
Ifrit a powerful demonic creature inspired by Islamic culture often related to Djinns. New Djinn enemies will help him in his battle against you. As you may know Djinns act as weapon curses in Die for the Lich, so be prepared for a new type of curse as well.
Djinns are not the only new enemy, we also bring some Asia inspired creatures like Penanaggala, vampiric creature that takes the form of a floating disembodied woman's head, with its organs and entrails trailing from its neck. We also bring Amanojaku a small demon or a yokai born from the syncretism of Buddhist, Chinese, and Shinto traditions, symbolizing contrariness and human desire
Say farewell to Abyss Dice. 👋
We had a lot of complaints about the Abyss Dice in ACT 3 and we have decided to finally get rid of them. It seems like it made the game a bit more slow and just not as enjoyable.
This has been the biggest criticism we have gotten since we released in Early Access. We tried all kinds of solutions but it never really felt right, so this decision did not come lightly. We have also reworked the Abyss Buff, hopefully ACT 3 will only feel benefit from this change.
Two new weapons, a die and a trinket
Two new weapons join the hunt for the Lich. Earth Whip and Iron Grip, one of them is already unlocked and ready to slay some poor shucks.
We also added a new die and a trinket. Since the Abyss Dice are gone now we had to include another die to replace it in your collection. Don't worry this one will not be as annoying to draw.
Do you like coins? Good, we have an ability designed for those who LOVE coins.
It basically functions very similar to Dante's ability but this one uses coins, so if you've been enjoying Dante you might enjoy him even more now.
Something that has bothered us from day 1 is that you cannot really tell what dice you're allowed to roll after critical, and especially if you do not have them in your tray. You should now see little flags on top of your tray to showcase exactly that.
Three new achievements have been added! We have a lot of players that love hunting achievements and we're happy to please them.
We have gone through a lot of enemies and have tried balancing them as much as possible. From the humble Vetala Skeleton to the skinless Nuckelavee, we have refined them and will keep on doing it until v1.0.
Big thanks to our discord for helping us test and figure out better balance.
Do you want try out new updates before their available to everyone else? Do you want your name to be included in the game's credits?
We have a discord channel that is helping us a lot with finding bugs and giving us constructive feedback. If you're interested you should join us and we'll make sure you also get your name in the game's credits and a beta-testing role in Discord.
We had out one year anniversary yesterday for the Newgrounds Web Demo on the 29th of January!
🎉💃🎊🥳🎲
It has been such a crazy journey and keeps on being one, from getting 2 Left Thumbs as a publisher to releasing a demo on Steam to now being in Early Access to hopfully releasing v1.0 later this year. We’ve been very busy building the game, and our current beta testers have been playing a huge role in shaping it by finding bugs, sharing feedback, and helping us improve each update before release. Still, development moves fast, and testing everything thoroughly takes time.
By opening the beta to more players, we’re giving you the chance to directly influence how the game evolves and help us deliver a more stable, polished experience with every update.
We’ll be releasing frequent beta updates, usually about once a week. These builds are intentionally unfinished and experimental, which means things may break, balance may be off, and bugs will absolutely sneak in, and that’s exactly the point.
As a beta tester, you’ll get early access to upcoming content and features while helping us test new dice, trinkets, weapons, abilities, enemies, and bosses. Your feedback will actively help shape balance decisions, design tweaks, and overall polish before each update goes live.
You'll need to go to your Steam's Library and find Die for the Lich. Find your way to the game's properties...
Then go to Game Versions & Betas.
In the Private Versions field type BetaRollingDice123 and click Check Code.
Now make sure you have ticked the beta-test button.
Congratulations you're now officially a Beta Tester!
P.S. Make sure you go back to the default version if you want to play the public version.
Report bugs!
You can go to our discord and post bugs in the bugs-forums. You can also do it in game by pressing the Report a Bug button in the main menu. We also have a Steam discussions post for bug reporting.
So you found a bug, what should you do?
Create a post.
The post report should include the version of the game when the bug appeared (top right corner in-game).
Write a short explanation on what was happening before the bug.
(Optional) Screenshot if you think that helps.
(Optional) Write a simple steps instruction to recreate it.
We will try to get back to you as soon as possible, but it might take a bit, so don't worry we see the post.
We have a bunch of new enemies ready for you to slay! Including a new boss fight for ACT 2 and some Asia inspired creatures like Penanggalan and Amanojaku.
Also there is new UI, it is visualization for how many extra dice you can roll after critical. We're hoping this would help people understand the critical system better.
New boss, Ifrit.

Happy (late) New Year! After a full year grinding on Die For The Lich, we hope you had a few relaxing weeks and are fully recharged for the year ahead.
v0.9.1 is here!
It is a small update to the game, addressing most common bugs. But first, a loose "roadmap" of how we'd like to build towards a v1.0 release.
We’ve been hard at work putting together our roadmap for DFTL in 2026, and we’re excited to share a broad overview of what's to come!
We want to focus on refactoring the game's core code.
Fix major and minor bugs.
Balance and rework patches.
Introduce more enemies and bosses.
More weapons, trinkets, abilities and dice.
The Lich enters the chat.
Release v1.0
Early on we focused heavily on adding Weapons, Trinkets and Dice to widen the game. Now our content priority is to make the game deeper, with new enemies, bosses and ways of challenging your build. This will help us better balance the existing content before attempting to build out in other directions.
We are excited to move forward and keep updating the game, it might take some time, but we are hard at work.
Swing Blade critical is 17 and removed Death Fetch debuff cast on hit.
Bad Hand debuff description.

Softlock when save & loading on completing Act 1 or Act 2 without exploring other nodes.
Thin Silence & Broad Silence don't save critical when you save & exit.
Medallion of Greed value not persistent between saving & loading.
Shuck Pelt ability halving maximum health when loaded.
Not saving data on short and uneventful runs.
Able to use weapon after Silver Star is rolled during bag drawing and not failing the roll.
We want to thank everyone that had the time to report bugs, it helps us a lot in making this game more enjoyable for everyone. We are working on v0.9.2 which will bring new enemies and address some of the more complicated bugs.
Cheers!
Krampus will sometimes greet you at the gates of the church instead of Ankou alongside his trusted stags. His battle revolves around the dice freeze mechanic and clever thinking.
New dice (and trinkets) physics are here! We teased these two weeks ago on twitter. It was something we wanted to do since we were on Newgrounds and finally had the time do it!
We have 3 new dice and 2 new trinkets added to the game. But before you play with them you'll have to unlock them.
Most updates we include new weapons and this one is not any different.
We added 4 new unlockable weapons with one being a weapon from another indie game.
In my opinion leveling up is one of the most crucial parts of the game, a new ability can make or break your run. In this update we're introducing 3 new unlockable abilities! We have also touched up the Ghost Mask to make it a bit more competitive.
There are also 13 new achievements! A few returning achievements from both the Newgrounds and Steam demos. Achievements are one of our favorite things to add since there are almost endless ideas for them. We just try and focus on picking the most fair and challenging ones.
The game now also comes with a lot more "juice". Chests opening, hitting criticals and monster have never felt this good. We strive to make this game feel good even whenever you do something as mundane as throwing a die

We always love it whenever we see fanart from the community, so here are some of our recent favorites.
They also drew Undertaker and our logo in Wplace.

If you've spent time with the previous version, you're in for a treat, we've added a lot of new content and made several improvements and fixes throughout.
If you’re not familiar with ‘Die for the Lich’ it is a roguelike dice deckbuilder. The mechanic of the game is simple, roll dice and try not to roll over the limit and of course kill as many mythical creatures as possible in the process.
You might not have unlocked them all yet, and we’re adding even more.
This time, we focused on weapons that apply buffs and debuffs to mix things up a bit and see how they impact your playstyle.
If you haven’t been the biggest fan of Dante, we’ve got some good news, he’s undergone a major rework.
His starting ability has been completely redesigned to create a more distinct experience between the two playable characters.
But if you preferred the old Dante, let us know, we’re actively working with the community to make the best possible changes.
This is another change that has been welcomed with open arms, the old Blood Moon was a bit too straightforward. The new blood moon brings more strategy to every dice and trinket rolled to keep you on your toes.
The Angel now offers two new curses: Unlucky Curse and Dice Bound Curse.
Curses also come with a new look, we removed the generic skull with an eye on his forehead design with one inspired by a Djinn, giving them a more fitting and mysterious vibe.
Originally intended as a hidden weapon for those willing to seek it out, the Blood Blade gradually lost its secretive charm and became a bit too easy to obtain.
With this update, we’ve reworked its function and price to better reflect its original, more elusive design.
Time to start killing more monsters on your way to Ankou because there’s a brand new ability in play, and the old Halo has been reworked.
The Oracle now offers a glimpse into the future with a new per-turn mechanic.
If you’ve been ignoring the Halo because it felt underwhelming, you might want to give it another shot… or keep ignoring it. Either way, it’s definitely more useful now.

If the game is not running smoothly or you’ve not had the chance to play it because your computer is too slow, we may be able to fix that. With our new GL Compatibility option when you first run the game.
This was our way of fixing it, and it seems like it has worked for the few people that have reported having these problems.
We’ve also made a number of smaller changes and fixes, we’ll let you discover those for yourself.
A huge thank you to everyone who’s played, reviewed, and supported the game. It truly means a lot to see how much you're enjoying it, and we’ve loved seeing all the ideas and suggestions you’ve shared.

Enjoy the new update!
Today we are releasing the official Steam Demo! We have been working on it non-stop and are super excited to present it to you.
Die for the Lich is a roguelike dice deckbuilder. The mechanic of the game is simple, roll dice and try not to roll over the limit and of course kill as many mythical creatures as possible in the process.
This demo is a continuation of our web demo, which we released on January 29th this year on Newgrounds. It received over 90,000 plays and was awarded Best Game of January.
We're excited to bring a ton of new content to this updated Steam demo.
We've always planned to have more than one playable character in Die for the Lich. This new addition changes the way you play the game, but you'll need to unlock them first before diving in.
For those seeking an extra challenge and greater rewards, Blood Moon Battles are for you. You'll be able to choose these encounters on your path to the Lich. It's entirely up to you whether you take on the risk.
It is a system that makes enemies more dynamic, challenging, and strategically engaging. Most enemies come with their own unique buffs and some of them can cast a debuff on you, so stay alert and plan accordingly.
Don’t have the die you need? No problem, you can craft it yourself. Dice Combining is a special map node you can choose during your run, letting you merge two dice to create something new and more useful for your strategy.
Carrying too many dice but running low on health? Healing Angels are here to help. In exchange for one of your dice, these celestial beings will restore your health and keep you going on your journey.
Each run brings you closer to unlocking a wealth of new content. As you play, you'll gain access to powerful new dice, unique trinkets, deadly weapons, and special abilities that expand your strategic options. Whether you succeed or fail, every attempt pushes your progress forward and opens up exciting new possibilities for future runs.
If you're coming from the web demo, we’ve got some bad news… the old music is gone.
But here’s the good news: we now have an all-original soundtrack composed by Hyperstepp, created specifically to accompany your glorious, repeated deaths.
Compete with players around the world and see if you can claim the crown for the day. Top the leaderboard and earn your moment of glory, plus a shoutout on our Discord server.
Just remember: bragging rights only last for 24 hours. Use them wisely. I'll see you at the top.
We want to thank everyone who played our old web demo and all our beta testers for their incredible support and for playing some pretty broken versions of the game.
If you’d like to help out or just keep up with the latest progress, be sure to join our Discord server. We post updates every week and love stealing ideas from our amazing community.
What are you waiting for? Jump into the demo and, if you enjoy it, please leave a review. It means the world to us! We’re a very small team, and your support really helps us keep going.
It’s been almost five months since we released the web demo, and we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes. Now, we're thrilled to reveal what is new in the Steam demo of Die for the Lich.
Crafting Dice Take control of your strategy like never before. Our new crafting system lets you forge any die you can imagine, as long as you have the right components. Build the dice that suit your playstyle.
New Playable Character Introducing Dante, an undead poet with a powerful, unique ability that opens up entirely new tactical options. He’s more than just a new face, he’s a whole new way to play.
Strategic Battles We've introduced a new buff/debuff system that makes enemies more dynamic, challenging, and strategically engaging.
Meta-Progression This isn’t just a run-based roguelike. Earn powerful dice, trinkets, weapons and abilities over time with our new meta-progression system. Locked behind challenging tasks and achievements.
And that’s just a glimpse of what we’ve prepared for the Steam demo. Don’t leave it to chance and wishlist the game now! Check out our discord for more updates.
