Crystalfall news & patch notes

We as a studio have some unfortunate news to share with you today. With all the hard work and love we poured into our first content update, it was with heavy hearts that we had to confront the reality that we don’t have the runway to continue independent development on Crystalfall as a free online live service game. As a result, we will shut down the servers for Crystalfall on 16 July, 2026, though the offline singleplayer version will remain on Steam.

We have included a summary here with all the main points. For more context, continue on reading after the bullet list. 

SUMMARY: 

• The Early Access of Crystalfall as a free online live service game will close its servers on 16 July, 2026

• The offline singleplayer version of Crystalfall’s Early Access will remain on Steam as a free to play game. 

• Those who have Crystalfall added to their Steam Libraries will continue to have access to the offline singleplayer version of the game. 

• Players have until 16 July, 2026 to download their character progress along with any gained entitlements and purchased microtransactions. 

• Stash tabs, inventory tabs and cargo tabs will be acquirable in the game with lootable Shards (soft currency). 

• You will not be able to purchase any in-game Credits (hard currency). 

• Players who have previously bought in-game Credits (hard currency) can continue to spend them on cosmetics in the offline version. Players have until 16 July, 2026 to save their in-game Credits, along with any gained entitlements and purchased microtransactions to the offline version. 

• The Founder Packs will be removed from sale in the game, on our webshop, and on Steam. 

• The offline singleplayer version of Crystalfall will not have in-game trading or leaderboards. 

• Plans for additional hotfixes and patches are for now discontinued and CRG Studio will not be available for game support. 

• CRG Studio will continue its operations as a game development studio, exploring opportunities for future development on Crystalfall or other game projects.

Background on Crystalfall

What began as a small core team of ARPG enthusiasts grew into an ambitious indie studio, and we’ll be the first to admit we might have taken on a bit too much too early. Building a systems-heavy ARPG with a small team is in itself a monumental task, but launching and running it as a free online live service game is a beast on its own. 

Launching the game in Early Access is in itself a challenge. As a studio, there was really no way around it if we wanted to continue developing Crystalfall to the point where it could realise its full potential in the future. We knew that we couldn’t do that without the help of the community, as balancing a game of this size is near impossible. Releasing Crystalfall as a free-to-play Early Access was a way for us to put the game in your hands, giving you a chance to try it out before choosing to support us with a purchase. But it backfired. 

Early Access today is in a different place than it was when we began this journey. The expectations are simply higher than they used to be. We did our best with the time we had to get Crystalfall in a state where we felt it was ready to be put in the hands of the players, but the server provider change that happened so close to our launch put us in a risky position. We really didn’t want to lose the momentum we had going from Steam Next Fest, but we made the difficult decision to delay the launch for a few weeks to give us a chance to test the new infrastructure. But even with our testing, we couldn’t have foreseen the server load we received on the very first seconds of our launch, which caused unexpected issues that took longer than expected to track down. 

As a result, our Steam rating tanked, though server issues weren’t the only reason for the negative reviews. In its Early Access state Crystalfall hasn't yet fulfilled its true potential, and feedback centred around lack of content, QoL, performance, and monetization not matching the current quality level of the game. The monetization was there to help us get to that quality level, but we realise now that it might have been better to style our Founder Packs as a Kickstarter instead, and to have offered more in-game options to unlock storage space. In the end we aren’t really doing things so fundamentally different from other live service games, but we were judged more harshly for it due to the game not yet being as polished. It’s a tough situation all in all, and we really did our best to remedy it and address all the feedback and concerns for our content update on June 4th. 

Despite receiving good feedback on our new patch, which got us up to Mixed Recent Reviews, we as a studio have reached a point where we don’t have the runway to continue independent development on Crystalfall as a free online live service game. 

As a result, we have decided to close down the servers for the online version after 30 days, while keeping the offline singleplayer version on Steam. This way, players will have time to download their character progress, along with any gained entitlements and purchased microtransactions for the offline version. 

For now, any plans to release additional hotfixes and patches for the game have been discontinued, and as a studio we will not be able to provide any game support for the foreseeable future. Our hotfix today will implement changes to the shop while also addressing some of the issues that have been reported on the new content patch. Check the patch notes at the end of this announcement. 

Despite freezing development on Crystalfall, CRG Studio will continue operating as a game development studio. We have a strong team with a burning passion for developing games, and we’ve created many complex game systems and lots of content over the years. With the experience and insight we have gained throughout this journey, we will continue exploring opportunities for future development on Crystalfall or other game projects. 

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported and followed us on this journey. Watching you play and figure out the mechanics of the game, seeing the builds you cook up, how you support each other and build bonds in the community, the content and the memes and inside jokes you’ve shared - that has been a tremendous joy for us and is what made the process of building Crystalfall so fun for our team. 

There are many things we wish we could have done differently, but we can honestly say that we’ve done everything we could with the time and resources we had. Everyone says that building a game is hard, but building an ARPG with endless replayability is harder, and building an online ARPG with endless replayability is even harder. We did our best, and we will do our best to continue.

We are excited to announce our first Content Update for Early Access, which will bring new content, QoL improvements and monetization changes in response to key feedback that we’ve received (so far!). 

The patch will launch on Thursday, 4th June, 2026 at 12pm UTC (noon) on Steam.

So far in Early Access Crystalfall has an average playtime of 5+ hours with some players amassing 100+ hours of playtime in the first week of Early Access alone. Our team received 2100+ reviews on Steam and Discord which we’ve dug into to identify key feedback points for us to address. Besides early server issues, the feedback centred around lack of content, lack of QoL, and monetization. 

We know that our launch did not live up to expectations, which we are really sorry for. Throughout Early Access we’ve attempted to address connection issues and concerns that have arisen since launch, especially for Russian players who were unable to access due to the current geopolitical situation. We have rolled out four hotfixes so far and continue to investigate how to improve Crystalfall. 

QoL Features

Our intention has been to add Quality of Life features over time, though our first priority for Early Access is to add progression systems that heavily depend on player feedback for balancing. For patch 1, we will add the below QoL features, though they are still in their early stages: 

• Loot Filter

• Buy 1 Stash Tab for Shards (limited to 1 purchase) 

• Experimental early-stage WASD movement-only controls option

  • The WASD controls option is limited to movement-only and is in its early experimental stages. 

Monetization Changes

In response to feedback on our monetization model, we will make several pricing adjustments for our content patch. 

• New Patch 1 Cosmetics added to Founder Packs

  • Existing Founders will also receive these new cosmetics

• Inventory Tab: permanent price reduction from 150 to 75 in-game Credits (7.5 USD). 

  • Previous buyers will be compensated with 75 in-game Credits

• 50 in-game Credit topup option

• Platinum Founder Pack is closed for sale

  • Existing Platinum Founders keep all their items

Our game designers have been having a blast diving into your builds. It’s really fun for our team to see how you explore our progression systems, creating synergies to theorycraft the perfect build. 

We know that in Early Access some builds will be more powerful than others and that is not unusual with the changing meta between full release seasons as well.

What became apparent in this competition was that the most overpowered builds were also the most creative, which means that 3 winners emerged for most creative and overpowered build.

Many of you have been asking what’s coming next in Crystalfall. 

We are excited to reveal this teaser for our upcoming content update which is currently in development and planned for early summer. We have a bigger announcement coming closer to the day, so see this as the “announcement of the announcement”. 

For now, what we can say is that our first content update will bring new content both to the main campaign and endgame as well as some QoL improvements. We are also continually working on bug fixes and improvements to balancing and performance.

Rest assured we are always listening to feedback and will continue to make changes and fixes throughout Early Access. We hope you’ll stick around for the ride, because we’re not giving up on our community and we will continue to improve Crystalfall.

We are approaching the third weekend of Early Access and our team is rolling out a non-invasive hotfix today which comes with several notable bug fixes and improvements. You will be able to continue playing Crystalfall as normal during this hotfix. 

Check the hotfix notes below and gear up for the weekend grind on week 3’s leaderboard challenges! 

Hotfix notes: 

• Added fusing recipe for portal keys

• Adjusted vendor buy multiplier (cheaper prices at the vendors)

• Fixed issues with wrong locations highlighted in journal for act 4 & 5

• Fixed issues projectile chaining distance

• Fixed various campaign exits and waypoints showing up in endgame areas

• Fixed default attack cooldown

• Fixed skill node buffs disappearing if using all skill charges at once

• Fixed usage count on endgame portals

• Fixed extra quest items being stuck in inventory (breach jack) 

• Fixed Aether walk infinite buff exploit

• Improved rolling update experience (less downtime for future updates, yay!)

Some clarification regarding our monetization. 

• Crystalfall is free to play in Early Access and on full release. In Early Access there are five acts and early stages of endgame to enjoy for free. 

• To support the development of Crystalfall, there are Early Access Supporter Packs called Founder Packs which are only available for purchase during Early Access.

• The inventory tab is account bound, which means that it adds an inventory tab to all your characters. 

Russian server issue

Russian players continue to have connection issues due to ISP blocking of our servers due to the geopolitical situation. We are working together with our server provider to find a solution for Russian players. This is an unfortunate situation that is the reality not only for Crystalfall but many other games.

- Fixed an issue causing disconnect when entering new end game areas.

- Fixed input being lost when pressing ESC inside a search field.

- Fixed instance lifetime handling, should fix unexpected disconnects and various encampment connection issues. - Increased Town Portal life length from 5 min to 10 min.

On Friday, we launched the Early Access of Crystalfall. We are incredibly grateful for everyone who joined us on the launch weekend, despite the issues we experienced with our servers and backend. 

We know the first 24 hours of Early Access didn’t meet expectations, and we’re sorry for the frustration this caused. Thank you for your patience and for sticking with us. 

We are overjoyed as well as humbled to see that so many players want to play the Early Access, and as the servers have been stable for the last 24 hours, we hope that you’ve been enjoying your experience in the game with minimal hiccups. 

Extra thanks are in order to those who took the time to report login issues and bugs. It is amazing to have such a supportive community and means the world to us when you help answer other players’ questions or offer us kind words of encouragement. 

Our team has been working around the clock this weekend. So far we’ve deployed several hotfixes to address backend issues. We will continue to work on hotfixes as we investigate your reports and feedback, and hope that by now we’ve had most of the critical issues fixed. 

What we’ve fixed so far: 

• Mitigated concurrency deadlocks

• Identified and fixed several database connection pooling issues

• Allocation rate limits imposed

• Extended number of deployment locations

• Complete cluster migration due to node failures

• Terminated lingering servers

• Fixed an issue where players got stuck and rollbacked

• Fixed issue with uniques not dropping 

We are aware that some players may still experience issues with getting servers. A workaround is to switch to a different server region as that appears to work for most players.

Character issue due to faulty email login

During the initial phase of the Early Access launch, we experienced backend and server issues due to the high inflow of players attempting to access simultaneously. This resulted in a bug prompting for email login, which was not supposed to be included as this was an old alternative login option for our devs. We apologize for this error and have since removed it. All emails that were collected will be deleted. 

Due to this bug, players who logged in with email and started playing lost their character when we deployed the fix to remove the email login option. Unfortunately we won’t be able to restore those characters. 

As compensation, we will offer you the Exclusive Lava Armor Skin for free, which was the top tier cosmetic skin on our pre-registration reward campaign. This cosmetic was not unlocked during the campaign, but we have chosen to give this out as a free reward as appreciation for your understanding and patience. 

Since we know it has been a frustrating launch weekend for everyone, we will extend this free reward offer of the Exclusive Lava Armor Skin to all players who attempted to access the game up until Today, Monday, 12pm UTC.

How to Redeem the Free Lava Armor Skin:

We’ve been working closely with our backend provider to tackle the issues impacting the game. 

A set of fixes have been deployed which should address many of the problems players have been experiencing with logging into the lobby, connecting to servers, and unexpected disconnects.

For the initial two hours after deploying the fixes things looked promising, and most players now seem to have access to the game. However, while it solved some issues we are still having some backend problems that may cause login issues and player disconnections from servers.

We will continue to monitor the situation with our provider and hope that most of you will be able to access the game.

We know the first 24 hours of Early Access didn’t meet expectations, and we’re sorry for the frustration this caused.

Regarding players getting stuck on the loading screen while trying to log in, as well as those experiencing disconnection issues:

We have identified that the issue is not related to our server provider, everything is running fine on their end. This means that players who do manage to log in are, for the most part, having a smooth experience.

The problem lies with where we are hosting our backend, where all player data is stored. Prior to launch, we scaled the backend to handle a high amount of concurrent users. This backend is responsible for storing player characters and all their items. However, the current issue is impacting the backend in a way that brings it to its knees at a much lower capacity than it was designed to handle. As a result, some players are unable to log in, and others may lose connection when moving between zones.

We have been working non-stop with our hosting provider to identify the cause of this issue. Around 5 AM UTC, we believed we had resolved it, and the player count returned to around 4.5k CCU.

We are a small indie team, and after working for 30+ hours straight, our backend devs took a few hours of rest when things appeared to be stable. Unfortunately, we were later alerted that the issue had returned.

We will continue working on this, but we cannot promise a specific time for when it will be fully resolved. We will keep you updated on any progress and hope to have this fixed as soon as possible.

We have now deployed a fix that should solve the backend issue that was preventing players from logging in. We hope things will stay stable and we will continue to monitor the situation as players begin to log in again.

We think we have identified the issue and are going to do a hotfix which will require us to go into maintenance mode. This will result in players being disconnected from the game. We will make an announcement when you are able to log into the game again.

Players who logged in with email may lose their character and will need to reach out to support to have their character restored by our team. Create a support ticket on Discord with your character name, email and Steam ID if you are affected.

Update:

We have now scaled the servers to handle the high inflow of players, which means that players who are able to login should be able to play as normal. However, the high inflow of players caused another issue on the backend side which is hosted on Google. The login step to the lobby communicates with the backend, and due to the high inflow of players this caused issues  on Google’s side. We are in meetings with Google and working together to solve this issue. This is the reason why players are experiencing issues logging in to the lobby and are getting stuck in the loading screen.

We hope to have this sorted as soon as possible and we are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

We are experiencing server and login issues due to high inflow of players. One of the issues reported is that players are required to enter an email and are unable to proceed into the game. Players may continue to experience login issues until we resolve this. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working as fast as we can to resolve this and will keep you updated.

Update about the email login step: We're removing the email login alternative, as this was never meant to be included (it's a internal dev/debug feature).

We are pushing an update to remove this step.

Any emails that were collected will be deleted.

Due to our server provider being acquired by another company, we have been forced to migrate to a new provider under circumstances we couldn't have anticipated. We haven't had enough time to fully test the game on the new infrastructure, and out of fairness to our community we don’t want to launch the Early Access until we feel confident in our migration to our new server provider.

Because of this, we've made the decision to delay Crystalfall.

20 March is the date for the Crystalfall Early Access launch! Not long to go now! Check this guide for your local start time:

The Early Access will be online only and features five acts, three playable classes, and early stages of endgame, in-game trading and leaderboards. The game will be localized to all languages stated in the Language section on our Steam page. Read more in the Early Access FAQ on our Steam page. When EA launches, we will close down the Demo.

Steam Next Fest was absolutely incredible as we welcomed over 58,000 players, making us one of the Top 50 demos of Next Fest! But we know the journey is just starting, Early Access is going to truly shape our game and we're super excited! We've gotten a lot of really valuable feedback from the Demo during Steam Next Fest and want to thank our players for taking the time to share their thoughts on the game. This is why we are launching Crystalfall into Early Access, to include you in this journey and continue improving the game over time. While we have gathered feedback from the Demo, we want to be transparent about the fact that we will continue to prioritize game mechanics as we go into Early Access. We are aiming to address some of the issues that arose during SNF for EA, but some fixes require more resources than we can allocate presently, and will be scheduled for the next hotfix or patch.

For our first patch, we are planning to add some additional progression and endgame mechanics. More information on that will follow later. Some players are concerned about the current lack of WASD and controller support. We want to say that we hear you and understand your position. These requests mean that Crystalfall has a broader market appeal than we expected, and while we wish we could accommodate WASD and controller support, we are a small team who have to make tough decisions on where to prioritize our resources.  We don’t think it would be fair to our players to add controller support or WASD to EA without proper testing, and for that reason we currently have to prioritize a stable build where we can focus on polishing and balancing gameplay mechanics.  If controller support and WASD become possible down the road, we'll make an announcement.
