CORRUPT.EXE: THE LIVING SYSTEM UPDATE
The system has changed.
Since the current live version,
v34.9, CORRUPT.EXE has undergone its largest update yet. The Living System Update brings the game to
v36.7.3 and rebuilds major parts of the experience around player feedback.
The battlefield has been redesigned. The antivirus learns more intelligently. Difficulty now reacts to success and failure. Every playable malware strain has a stronger identity. Bosses communicate their attacks more clearly. The standard maze has been replaced by a new malware-themed puzzle. The HUD, menus, tutorials, animations, audio, performance, and run summaries have all received substantial improvements.
This is not a small balance patch.
This is the next form of CORRUPT.EXE.

THE ALIVE DIRECTOR
The antivirus no longer applies pressure in exactly the same way to every player.
The new
ALIVE Director develops a persistent temperament based on your recent performance. It observes when you fail, how far you survive, what repeatedly kills you, and how consistently you succeed.
Repeated early failures encourage the antivirus to ease its response budget. Strong victories make it more confident and aggressive.
The Director can move between five diegetic response states:
- MINIMAL RESPONSE
- RESTRAINED
- CALIBRATED
- ESCALATED
- PREDATORY
Depending on your performance, it can adjust:
- Enemy health
- Enemy movement pressure
- Spawn intensity
- Countermeasure deployment
- Behaviour prediction strength
- Panic-enemy frequency
- Boss and elite pressure
- Response timing
Repeated deaths to the same threat can cause that enemy or boss to be temporarily deprioritized or softened.
When the player is struggling at low health, the system can reduce future pressure, shorten active countermeasures, and withhold certain aggressive responses.
When the player is healthy, clearing enemies quickly, and repeatedly succeeding, the system gradually leans in.
This is not presented as an obvious difficulty selection. The antivirus should feel like a living opponent deciding how seriously it needs to take you.
Mercy does not reduce rewards. Higher response states can instead provide a modest DATA bonus.
THREAT MODEL 2.0
The antivirus now studies how you actually play instead of relying only on your current equipment.
The Threat Model observes behaviour including:
- Preferred engagement distance
- Movement speed and predictability
- Circling and orbiting behaviour
- Preferred dodge direction
- Aggression and close-range pressure
- Low-health retreat habits
- Healing reliance
- Dominant damage archetypes
- Strain-specific habits
The system maintains both a global profile and separate behavioural memory for individual malware strains.
As its confidence increases, the antivirus can deploy visible temporary countermeasures:
- INTERCEPTOR
- CONTAINMENT
- DISPERSION
- REFLECTION
- PREDICTION
- PURSUIT
Players can deliberately alter their behaviour to trigger
PROFILE DESYNC, temporarily confusing the antivirus and receiving bonus DATA.
The Threat Profile now records:
- Runs observed
- Threat rating
- Model confidence
- Movement profile
- Aggression profile
- Dominant damage type
- Most-used strain
- Favourite fusion
- Discovered recipes and OMEGAs
- Countermeasure history
- Current ALIVE Director state
REWORKED MALWARE STRAINS
All six playable strains have received more distinctive and visible passives.
WORM.EXE — SEGMENTED REPAIR
WORM periodically repairs itself.
Every 75 kills also adds a permanent segment for the current run, increasing maximum health and restoring health. Segment growth is capped to preserve balance.
TROJAN.EXE — BACKDOOR SIPHON
Kills generate Backdoor charge, while elite enemies provide additional charge.
Completing the charge cycle restores health. If TROJAN is already at full health, the completed cycle creates a shield instead.
Charge is no longer wasted when a shield is already active.
RANSOM.EXE — EXTORTION
RANSOM retains its increased DATA income and now receives additional DATA from elite enemies.
It also gains stacking damage increases as its kill count rises during the run.
GHOST.EXE — PHASE SHIFT
Taking a real unshielded hit activates a temporary phase state.
While phased, GHOST receives brief immunity and a burst of movement speed. Its containment shell visibly changes to communicate the active state.
LOGIC.BMB — CHAIN REACTION
Every level-up causes a recompilation pulse that:
- Damages nearby enemies
- Destroys nearby hostile projectiles
- Immediately recompiles ability timers
- Triggers another weapon volley
OVERCLOCK.EXE — REDLINE
Continuous movement builds clock speed.
Higher clock levels increase movement and firing speed. Reaching maximum clock periodically launches a bonus homing volley.
PASSIVE PRESENTATION
Passive progress is now displayed through a small segmented ring around the player.
Current passive state also appears in:
- Character descriptions
- Pause-menu Build view
- End-of-run Build Archive
- Run telemetry
SERVER CHAMBER BATTLEFIELD OVERHAUL
The old neon-grid arena has been transformed into a connected digital machine-space.
The battlefield now contains:
- Large connected machine plates
- More defined floor dividers
- Recessed power conduits
- Cooling vents
- Relays and terminals
- Raised server structures
- Visible side faces and panel depth
- Machine-status lights
- Damaged hardware
- Corruption scars
- Improved contact shadows
- Selective local lighting
The environment remains mechanically flat so decorative structures do not block movement or projectiles.
SIX ENVIRONMENTAL THEMES
Campaign progression can now transform the arena between:
- SERVER CHAMBER
- QUARANTINE SECTOR
- THERMAL ARRAY
- MEMORY VAULT
- COLD STORAGE
- CORRUPTION ZONE
Each theme changes the floor treatment, machinery accents, warning lights, server presentation, and corruption effects while preserving gameplay readability.
RUN-DEPTH ESCALATION
The arena reacts as the run becomes more dangerous.
Environmental pressure is influenced by:
- Run duration
- Boss depth
- Threat Model confidence
- Antivirus influence
- Campaign progression
As pressure increases, the environment can display:
- More warning strips
- Faster scanning activity
- Increasing corruption scars
- Unstable grid behaviour
- Lock-on brackets
- More active circuitry
- Stronger system-response effects
Reduced Background FX lowers this activity without removing the sense of progression entirely.
COMBAT VISUAL OVERHAUL
Combat has received a broad presentation pass designed to improve both impact and readability.
Improvements include:
- Contact shadows beneath major objects
- Raised visual depth for projectiles and pickups
- Better player and enemy silhouettes
- Beveled actor highlights
- Directional hit sparks
- Heavy and critical impact variants
- Floor pressure rings
- Grounded explosion effects
- Improved elite presentation
- Improved boss arrivals and defeats
- Reduced visual clutter during dense waves
Global gameplay bloom and HDR were removed in favour of controlled local effects. This allows attacks and rewards to glow without making the entire screen pulse or destabilizing the HUD.
PLAYER ANIMATION POLISH
The player now uses a visual-only animation rig that does not affect collision, weapon origins, camera position, or gameplay movement.
New animation behaviours include:
- Movement lean
- Inertial shell lag
- Directional damage reactions
- Brief compression on impact
- Heavy-weapon recoil
- Passive-state animations
- Stronger containment-shell presentation
- Improved movement wake
The player’s old heavy underside glow has been removed to preserve the shape of the core.
ENEMY ANIMATION POLISH
Enemies now communicate their actions more clearly.
New behaviours include:
- Compile-in spawn animation
- Delayed collision activation during spawning
- Directional movement stretch
- Attack anticipation
- Visible commitment points
- Release recoil
- Independent hit reactions
- Staged death animation
- Improved elite and boss death effects
Experience and rewards still resolve immediately, preventing death animations from delaying gameplay progression.
Spawn effects are capped during dense waves to protect performance and readability.
PROJECTILE, BEAM, AND EXPLOSION IMPROVEMENTS
Player and hostile projectiles now animate outward from a compressed launch state.
The Corruption Beam has received major improvements:
- Visible charge-up
- Thicker hot core
- Controlled outer glow
- Player recoil
- Contact sparks
- Floor-light response
- Animated beam extension
- More reliable enemy collision
- Enemy collision-radius support
- Angular sweep sampling
The beam can no longer damage enemies beyond its currently visible length during activation.
Explosions now use distinct stages:
- Central flash
- Pressure ring
- Fragments
- Floor residue
- Final distortion fade
BOSS ANIMATION IDENTITY
Bosses now have more distinctive movement, attack anticipation, and phase behaviour.
THE KERNEL / AVG-9000 PRIME
- Counter-rotating mechanical rings
- Faster machinery in later phases
- Visible dash compression
- Bullet-ring recoil
- Stronger phase-transition pulses
BLACKOUT.SYS

- Segment-loss reactions
- Improved lunge preparation
- Distinct turret and bomb anticipation
- Final-form collision and visual growth
FIREWALL.SYS
- Visible committed wall position
- Sequential block compilation
- Wall-construction recoil
- Improved volley anticipation
Each boss also has an independent defeat-fragment animation that does not delay rewards or achievements.
THE KERNEL CAMPAIGN
THE KERNEL is no longer presented as a permanently defeated final boss.
Every successful Crack allows it to:
- Archive its failure
- Merge new Threat Model information
- Compile another countermeasure
- Reboot as a stronger generation
- Prepare a new module for the next encounter
The seventh authored Crack remains a major campaign milestone, but THE KERNEL continues into procedural hardening afterward.
Later generations receive:
- Generation-aware dialogue
- Increasing movement pressure
- Stronger summons
- Expanded attack behaviour
- Additional defensive modules
- Reactive campaign presentation
FORM EVOLUTION
The player visibly changes as its build grows during a run:
- Level 10 — Mutation I
- Level 20 — Mutation II
- Level 30 — Mutation III
- Level 50 — Apex State
These stages add visible containment elements including brackets, segmented rings, compiled shards, and the final crown state.
The previous large Mutation Achieved popup has been removed.
Form changes now use a small silent notification:
FORM EVOLVED // MUTATION I // LV 10
The transformation remains visible on the player without interrupting combat.
NEW INFECTION CHAIN PUZZLE
The standard Dimension Rift maze has been replaced by a new malware-themed artifact puzzle.
Artifact caches now open an
8×8 hexadecimal memory grid.
The player must:
- Begin at ENTRY
- Create one continuous route through adjacent memory sectors
- Reach three signature codes in the correct order
- Avoid quarantined sectors
- Complete the route at PAYLOAD
Cells cannot be reused, but selecting an earlier cell rewinds the current trace.
Players can reset the entire route without losing the attempt.
Every puzzle creates a valid solution route before adding obstacles, ensuring the generated layout is solvable.
INFECTION CHAIN REWARDS
- Complete the full chain: guaranteed unowned artifact
- Verify all signatures but miss PAYLOAD: 50 DATA
- Verify two signatures: 35 DATA
- Verify one signature: 15 DATA
- No progress: no punishment
The minigame supports:
- Mouse
- Keyboard
- Controller
- Touchscreen
CLIPPI’S MAZE
The guided 3D maze remains in the game exclusively as a hostile CLIPPI.SYS mechanic.
Its route guidance, orientation period, fairer timer, improved controls, return fade, and post-return damage protection remain intact.
Keeping the maze exclusive to CLIPPI makes it part of the boss’s identity rather than a repeated base-game interruption.
BUILD INFORMATION AND RUN ARCHIVES
The pause menu now provides more information about the player’s current build, including:
- Current weapons
- Weapon levels
- Evolved names
- Weapon descriptions
- Artifacts
- Current passive
- Form-evolution state
Every run ending now includes a Build Archive covering:
- Weapons
- Evolutions
- Fusions
- OMEGAs
- Artifacts
- Synergies
- Passive state
- Final mutation stage
This makes it easier to understand which parts of a build were effective.
HUD STABILITY AND READABILITY
The permanent HUD has been rebuilt around an independent rendering layer.
The following elements are protected:
- Health and XP
- Timer
- PURGED counter
- Current abilities and build
- Artifacts
These elements no longer share their rendering parent with:
- Gameplay flashes
- Damage edges
- Low-health effects
- Camera movement
- Gameplay lighting
- Rift fades
- Modal transitions
- CLIPPI interference
Additional safeguards restore visibility, position, scale, rotation, and opacity if a stale animation attempts to modify critical HUD elements.
The HUD Effects option includes:
Important transitions remain visible even when ordinary HUD effects are disabled.
RESPONSIVE MAIN MENU
The old scrolling menu has been replaced by a responsive command deck.
Core menu content now fits within the active aspect ratio rather than requiring the player to scroll down to access essential buttons.
The menu includes:
- Strain selection
- Permanent upgrades
- Play
- DATA
- Achievements
- Codex
- Cosmetics
- Leaderboard
- Threat Profile
- Settings
- Intro replay
- Quit
The interface scales to support common 16:9, 16:10, ultrawide, and larger desktop resolutions.
Long-form pages such as Settings and the Codex retain scrolling where appropriate.
NEW STARTUP CINEMATIC
A new skippable intro establishes the game’s premise.
The sequence presents:
- The AVG Security KERNEL booting

Tutorial prompts are now saved individually.
Basic tutorials automatically retire after the player demonstrates meaningful progress, including:
- Completing multiple runs
- Spending DATA
- Unlocking a character
- Having existing permanent progression
Tutorials can be manually reset through Settings.
Major announcements remain visible longer, while unnecessary disruptive popups have been reduced or removed.

- Collision
- Weapons
- Passive
- Movement
- Trails
- Shields
- Form Evolution effects
THANK YOU
The Living System Update represents everything added between the current live build,
v34.9, and the new
v36.7.3 build.
The update was shaped heavily by player feedback—especially feedback regarding clarity, abrupt minigames, missing build information, disruptive popups, difficulty pressure, visual readability, and overall polish.
CORRUPT.EXE is still evolving.
The antivirus is watching.
The Threat Model is learning.
The Director is deciding how seriously it needs to take you.
Corrupt the system before the system understands you.
