When a game is submitted for testing on the Steam Deck, it can be assigned one of three different badges depending on how it performs. The Unsupported badge means that the game does not run properly on the Steam Deck, and the Playable badge means that the game can be played on the Steam Deck, but the player may need to make some manual adjustments to the game for it to function correctly.
The Verified badge is only awarded to games that operate well on the Steam Deck without the need for the player to make manual adjustments and don’t present any significant problems when it comes to installation, performance, controls, and display.

We grew up playing games like Myst and Riven, which had a profound influence on us.
In Riven, the puzzles are deeply woven into the world, and you’re encouraged to explore and absorb as much information as possible to understand how the environment and its mechanisms function.
Those games also feature beautiful, mesmerizing settings where you feel invited to get lost and spend hours playing at a slow, relaxed pace.
We approached the game design from the general to the specific, so the first step is to establish a difficulty curve that more or less defines how the puzzles would evolve throughout the game. After that, we outlined the puzzle logic in abstract terms, and then integrated the narrative. During this process, we iterate on the puzzle to adjust it to the story, and on the story to make it fit the puzzle.
This process usually involves the entire design department, since it is very important that the puzzles and the narrative go completely hand in hand.
Once we’re satisfied with the result on paper, we move on to prototyping. This is where the most important factor in fine-tuning the puzzles comes into play: being able to test them with players as early as possible.
By observing how players approach the puzzle and the difficulties they encounter, we iterate and make adjustments. At this stage, time becomes the main constraint, since the more playtests you can conduct, the better balanced and refined the puzzles will be.
When we used to play puzzle games, we would often keep a notebook to take notes. We thought we could offer that same tool to players by integrating it directly into the game. Whenever there’s something important and the player examines it, we record it in a journal.
This way, they can review those notes whenever they need to reflect on a puzzle. However, we will never provide the solution.
In our games, exploring the environment is always essential in order to gather all the necessary information. If you get stuck on a puzzle, take a closer look at your surroundings. You might find that things start to make more sense.
That said, some puzzles can be more challenging than others, so we’ve included a hint system in the pause menu. Players can access it at any time and request as many hints as they need.
For us, it’s also very important that using this system never penalizes the player in any way. What matters most is that players have fun and don’t feel frustrated.
Favourite Features: We are glad to see that you enjoy the depth of the puzzles and how they intertwine with the world; it's also brilliant to hear such great feedback on the voice acting
Feedback: We’re listening. We’ve already noted your suggestions regarding texture bugs, keyboard input accessibility (AZERTY) and we are hoping to fix this coming up.

On your venture to find answers, it is important to understand where the journey began.
In this month’s Dev Diary, get to know the developers at Out of the Blue Games - Manuel and Tatiana!
Q: How (and when) did Out of the Blue start?
Out of the Blue was born from the idea of creating a studio dedicated to narrative and puzzle games, which is the great passion of its founders, Manuel and Tatiana. After many years working in the industry, they also wanted to create a place where developers could enjoy doing what they love most: making games, but also making games that everyone could be proud of.
The idea for the studio began to take shape at the end of 2018 and was officially founded in 2019, starting with the development of its first game: Call of the Sea.
All is not well at Miskatonic University. Professor Harry Everhart tries to ignore the shadows flitting at the corners of his vision, while student Evangeline Drayton is haunted with impossible dreams of an artifact uncovered a decade ago. In their search for answers, the pair will uncover revelations more ancient than anyone could have imagined.
Call of the Sea’s object- and observation-based puzzles return with new depth. Scour richly-rendered environments for clues. Swap between Harry and Evangeline to solve complex, multi-part problems across time and space. Choose your own difficulty level with toggle-able hints, icons, and journal entries. For a true challenge, dare to read the Occult Books scattered about the world and meet new, reality-warping enigmas.
