Hello, our dear slightly unhinged nonconformists! You thought that we were done with BSS already? Nuh uh, the new batch of the kick-ass Burden Street stuff is coming your way, starting with this brand new old-fashioned infomercial – enjoy:
The occasion for this little celebratory vid is the release of the Burden Street Station Digital Zine which is already available for free right here on Steam!! We worked hard to assemble this love letter to our community and the game itself to thank you for all of the support, hilarious shitposts and kind words across Steam reviews and socials.
This puppy comes preloaded with a whole bunch of insights from the creator of the game – IODINE – and touches upon a variety of different aspects such as lore, characters, community fan art, and even some exclusive cut content! So if you finished the game wanting more of this abstract and intricate universe, don’t hesitate to dig into this piece:
The zine also highlights the artworks that won the BSS fan art contest along with a few words both from the incredibly talented participants and IODINE. Please check the credited authors and give them some love!! And once again, we want to thank every single one of you for the masterpieces that you provided for the competition. We are very excited to do more activities in the future to keep celebrating all of the ridiculously talented people in this community. Oh, one small addition! We also have a fresh new bundle with Hypnospace Outlaw. If you're interested in playing God, but this time while policing the cyberspace - this is your opportunity to grab both games in the Outlaws Burden bundle.
Huuuuge thanks and keep your eyes wide open for more updates!
Until next time,

Hi hi hellooo!!! We are glad to announce that Burden Street Station is OUT NOW!!! It says so in the OUT NOW trailer, see?
IODINE and CRITICAL REFLEX team worked hard to deliver this neat experience of a game to everyone seeking unorthodox but relatable stories told in the artsiest way possible! If that description fits you, but the BSS hype still passed you by, here are a few features that will make you fall in love with the game – even if you’re seeing it for the first time:
Explore a strange, dreamlike world rooted in our reality (with all of its pros and cons package included )
Build your personality brick by brick and unravel unexpected stories by shapeshifting between the 15+ different identities
Solve the mystery of the missing God and unpack five deep, intertwined storylines along the way
Meet a diverse cast of locals, from lost artists to mad conspiracy theorists in business suits, influence their decisions and change the people around you by changing yourself
And if you’re a fan of soundtracks that can stand on their own and earn a dedicated spot in your playlist, definitely check out the Burden Street Station Original Soundtrack! Fully composed by IODINE, it’s a complete package of a whopping 1.5 hrs of music, that include funky jazz bangers, compositions on a chillier side, and really touching melodies to cry/reconsider your life choices to. You can listen the tracks and enjoy the cool visualizer here:
The last thing that we would like to highlight here is the winners of the fan art contest! Once again, our community has blessed us with a whole bunch of beautiful submissions created by incredibly talented people. But these five artworks were the most ‘BSS-coded’ of them all and got IODINE’s blessings to win the contest:
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who has participated!! We’ll contact the featured artists on the platforms of their choice from the official CRITICAL REFLEX page to manage the prize distribution soon.
Alright, alright, we won't take any more of your time, go shapeshift your way through this crazy world already!!!!
As you all (probably) know, Burden Street Station is coming out on May 21st, which is, like, very soon. And we're continuing our celebration of this fact with some more news and a whole fan art contest!!!
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First of all, we wanted to present a special treat for everyone who's interested in the nitty-gritty details of the Burden Street Station world.
This booklet is filled with a bunch of different fun details that will touch upon the art, worldbuilding and development process of the game. And it will be available completely free for everyone whose mind shelters a funky lil' world of Burden Street rent-free.
For now, we can't uncover the release date for this thingy, so stay tuned for that. What we can actually share is our plan to implement a big nod to our community in the booklet!
As a "thank you" for all of the support, the digital zine will highlight and credit 5 different pieces of fan art made by you! And here's where the contest steps in.
Starting today, and up until May 17 7:00 PM GMT, share your BSS-related fan art on any of the following socials: X / Bluesky / Instagram with a hashtag #BurdenStreetContest . The best five works chosen by IODINE will be featured in the zine, get a free copy of Burden Street Station and the money prize!!!!
And here are the detailed rules for participation and the prizes:
The winners will be announced on May 21st, on the Burden Street Station release date.
We are really excited to see more of your works, let the contest begin!!!!!!!!
We are here once again to show some cool freaking Burden Street Station stuff! But not only that – we also have pretty big news for you today, so read carefully. First of all, let's continue this neat little tradition from the last devlog and watch a fresh new trailer that will also uncover one of the biggest… or maybe the biggest mystery of humankind – Burden Street Station RELEASE DATE!!
For the lazy and/or impatient folks that skipped the trailer right to this part, mark MAY 21st in your calendars, you rascals!!! That's right, we're less than a month away from the release, so buckle up.
Okay, now that the big news is out of the way, let's check some of the updates that will be waiting for you in the full release: candle rework, brand new insight system, new personalities, characters, locations and more
Alright, let's focus on the new stuff for now. Thanks to your feedback, it was clear that the most controversial part of the demo was the candle mechanic. Based on that, IODINE decided to rework it to refocus its gameplay potential into something more meaningful. Presenting the updated candle – now when you speak with people the candle is filling up instead of burning down!!!
Okay, okay, we're just messing with you, it's not the only change. Now when you speak with people, you're building up insight. Once the bar is filled, you can burn all that insight to peek into what sort of responses would work in the dialogue, and which ones wouldn't.
However, note that using insight burns you out. The more you burn out the slower the candle bar fills. To remove the debuff, you can use the resting spot and untangle your thoughts, just like before!
And voila, the new and shiny candle mechanic is at your service! Now it's less of a health bar and more like an optional guiding hand that can help if you're stuck.
Speaking of new and shiny, let's shed some light on the new content from the full release! We will be showing some story-related characters and locations ahead, so if you don't want to see even minor spoilers, feel free to skip to the next section of the devlog.
The spiraling story of Burden Street will take you across the various corners of LoTown, Pipelines and Hitown. LoTown is already open for exploration in the demo, but other locations will be unraveled in this very devlog.
Welcome to the epitome of generational sadness wrapped in layers upon layers of cold industrial landscapes.
The name of this place basically speaks for itself. Swarms of metallic houses cover most of the area, forming a widespread network of settlements. Rare shreds of color are buried underneath tons of steel used in the pipeline systems.
The farm is the brightest spot of the area which does its own twisted turn on the general mood of the location. The toxic green color that dominates here is used by nature only when it wants to tell you NOT to approach something.
Do you think art can bloom, even in such a hostile environment? To find out, you should definitely visit a certain talented painter that lives in Pipelines. Don't worry, Ruth will treat you well, you can find his shack deeper in the area.
Hitown is technocapitalism """heaven""" which is a different sort of sad than the Pipelines, but still on the spectrum for sure.
Skyscrapers, multi-building blocks, city art pieces and piers, there is plenty to see here... when you're not wasting your life at your office desk that is.
Yeah, the working hours here are going through the roof and the amount of coffee consumed by the locals is probably enough to construct a separate Coffee biome.
So, if you feel opportunistic, but also not averse to self-sabotage, come get your free spirit broken by suits of Hitown!!
But enough about sadness! After all, we’re here not only to soak up the information, but also to talk back a bunch. And for that you have plenty of personalities to choose from. The release version will allow you to change between 15+ body parts each with their own agenda, but to tease you we'll show a couple of new ones here.
As you can see, in the process of solving the case of the missing God, the librarian (controlled by the player) will absorb a diverse group of emotions, which can take pretty unexpected forms, especially if you choose to customize them!
Oh, and since we’ve mentioned customization, another new feature from IODINE is that you can now purchase color options for your traits using ideas as an alternative to the standard progression. So even if your personality doesn’t get used as often as you’d like, you can still make it pop with a different color anytime… as long as you’ve got enough currency, of course >:)
Alright, hopefully this new content leak will feed you with enough updates to survive until the full game release. Burden Street Station came a long way and it wouldn't be possible without your support, so we wanted to thank everyone who helped the game in any way!
Here's a little showcase of the progress done during the development process to illustrate the point:
Thank you for stopping by! We hope this devlog was both entertaining and informative and that your excitement for the game is higher than ever.
If so, you can enjoy yet another tradition that we're continuing…
Just like the first time, we have prepared some works from our talented community, please enjoy! And if you would like to see more content from the authors, feel free to check out their socials, handles are placed right under the works.
We thank the creators mentioned above as well as other people that are sharing their themed pieces on socials – your work is inspiring and we're glad that you're a part of the community!
Okay, let's wrap this up! We're really fired up for the release and can't wait for you to try out the new content. We have also prepared some more fun stuff to share with you, that we'll reveal closer to the release date. To make sure you're not missing anything, you can join the Discord and follow CR or IODINE on X. That's it for now, stay tuned
Until next time,
IODINE & CRITICAL REFLEX
We are (so) back with Burden Street Station updates, neatly compiled in a devlog for your convenience. And this one is tied to our participation at Convergence Showcase, where we showed a brand new trailer. And in case you’ve missed it live, now’s the second best time to check it out!
Also, we have prepared a new demo update with some of the most requested features that we yoinked right out of the feedback form. So, if you have any strong opinions on the game, we urge you to share your insights. But more on the new form later, for now let’s get down to business!
Presenting fast travel, chat log, customization, and moreeee
Let's kick things off with a huge quality-of-life change — fast travel! Locations now have special bus stops that allow player to traverse the distance from one place to another in a blink of an eye.
And for kings and queens with topographical disorientation we have also introduced the map!
That's right — no more wandering back and forth in search of the right place. You’re welcome!
Next on the list is a Notepad rework! We have thoroughly analyzed your feedback and figured that this system needs a refresh, since it wasn't clear enough.
Now, instead of showing off previous wrong answers, the notepad represents a chat log, where you can read lines of dialogue between you and the other yapper! And you can always open it in a full view to refresh the convo in your memory.
“But how would I know which options I have already tried?” — look no further, imaginary player we just made up! Used personalities will now be crossed out right in the selection menu.
Another pretty neat change: you can now skip repeated dialogue after the failed answer! You are still expected to read most of the dialogues thoroughly though…
Okay, now to really important stuff — we have added customization!
Now every personality has its own experience bar (accessible via the journal). Once it’s filled, the personality gets a new unique color to put on. Every successful personality use in the dialogue progresses the bar. Nice and easy!
Finally, bimbo bee-eater can become a reality.
And the last significant update we wanted to share is that you can now experience Burden Street Station with a controller. So kick back, grab a gamepad of your choice, and enjoy the new content — the updated demo is already out!!!
And as a special treat for the portable gaming enjoyers – Burden Street Station is now also adapted for Steamdeck! So feel free to collect your moments wherever you are.
That's it for the new content for now! The changes are already live, so feel free to hop in and (re)experience this small but exciting portion of the game for yourself. And while you’re at it, please consider filling in the feedback form. We really appreciate your insights, so keep them coming!
We also wanted to give a quick shout-out to the creators who support Burden Street Station with their works. Here are some of the great fan art entries that we’d like to credit. Please, enjoy the view and check out the talented authors — you can find handles underneath the works.
We plan to support the community further down the line, so if you want to participate, share your fan works and tag IODINE (@iodine_x64) and СRITICAL REFLEX (@critical_reflex) on Twitter!
That’s it for now, thanks for reading and stay tuned for more updates
Until next time,
IODINE & CRITICAL REFLEX
We have a bunch of new stuff that we want to share, and let’s start with the juiciest one: Burden Street Station will get an updated demo! We won’t spoil the date yet, but it’s going to be sooner than you think, so stay tuned. Besides, we are glad to announce that Burden Street Station will be participating in the Convergence Games Showcase, which will be taking taking place on February, 19th! More details can be found on Convergence’s official website.
We have prepared something special for this showcase, so don’t miss it! That’s it for now, but stay alerted to catch the updated demo when it’s out. To keep in touch, feel free to join IODINE Discord server! This is a perfect way to catch up with the news and to chat around with fellow inspired individuals.
Until next time,
IODINE & CRITICAL REFLEX
Burden Street Station is a cosmic archival psycho-drama dressed as a train sim, where you wear personalities like prosthetics to advance dialogue. And now it offers a sneak peek behind the space-veil of its world and story. In simpler terms: THE DEMO IS HERE!
In this world, memories and precious moments are harvested and turned into pulp fiction for the extradimensional Celestials. It’s not as bad as it sounds, and for some (you) it’s even a job. Yet the God overseeing and molding the world of Burden Street Station has disappeared.
Without any change or progress, nobody has any chance at going through a character arc. This put both the lives of the inhabitants and book production into a torpor. You – a lowly librarian, – and your entirely unenthusiastic book-companion are tasked with getting to the bottom of all this (and maybe ushering back in a little positive chaos).
Demo FeaturesExperience the opening chapters of Burden Street Station — two inter-woven storylines, and a shallow dip into the cosmic opera of what happened to this world;
Explore LoTown, the surreal district — discover one of the game’s three major districts. Expect impossible architecture, dubious rules and liminal atmosphere;
Meet the locals — interact with the LoTown’s cast of misfits and learn their quirks. Test your personality-switching power and make new friends (and foes!);
Experience the game’s original soundtrack — Immerse yourself in the uncanny and dreamy atmospheric score composed specifically for this world.
Oh, and we can’t forget about my Discord. Not only are you welcome to discuss Burden Street Station there, but my other game – Pillory, – also gets its own damp, murky corner on the server. Perfect place to talk about both projects or just have a good time in the chat.
Until next time, IODINE & CRITICAL REFLEX
HI.
I'm IODINE, the developer of Burden Street Station, and I have something extremely exciting to announce:
It says so right here on the wall:
BSS is the narrative adventure game I've been working on, featuring a surreal, ‘90s PC aesthetic (think Myst, ENA...).
In this world, mortals have their best and worst life moments harvested and made into sentient books. These books are then sold to higher celestial beings (Gods) for entertainment and nourishment.
One day, one of the worlds suddenly halts all book production, and its God disappears without a trace.
An unassuming worker drone (that's you!) and their assistant (a snarky book missing her own moment) are tasked with getting to the bottom of what happened, and uncover the mystery of this God's disappearance.
Explore a multitude of bizarre places and chat with their odd inhabitants.
Experience a surreal story that touches on themes like memory, grief, existentialism, and community.
Transform your head, body, or legs to unlock new dialogue choices to open people up with!
Enjoy the game’s unique artstyle, reminiscent of late-90s/early-00s PC edutainment titles.
Dive into the game’s strange atmosphere: somewhere between quirky, eerie, somber, and liminal.
I hope it makes you feel as weird playing it as I felt making it!
Burden Street is more or less a solo project. Alone, I just didn't have the resources to properly communicate the message it wants to convey.
I feel like CR is the perfect kind of publisher to help out with the kind of games I make – I think they really understand what I'm trying to do.
As part of the partnership for example, I got to work with COLORFICTION, who was very patient and taught me how to really get the most out of the artstyle I was going for. It wouldn't look nearly as cool without him!
This partnership also lets me do some things that are difficult to manage as a solodev, such as localizing the game into many, many languages.
In short, everybody wins!! But I win more because I get to make this thing even cooler than I originally planned.
The game is coming out pretty soon, so until then stay tuned and keep an eye out on updates and devlogs I will be posting on this Steam page from now on!
By the way, I’ve also got my own Discord server, so if you’re feeling lonely and want to talk games or just post silly stuff, join in! My other project, Pillory, also gets its own damp, murky corner on the server, so you can talk about both of my games and just have a good time (optional).
See you all pretty soon!!
