On May 1st, We received multiple feedbacks from our players about the game freezes or stop running. We looked into the issue and found out that some files on the Steam Cloud might be broken. We've upload the fixed files and this should be able to fix the said problem. If you've encountered this problem, please update to V2.0.9 and try again. Good day, révolutionnaires! Today is an important day for Banner of the Maid: its first DLC, The Oriental Pirate, is now available too on consoles. To celebrate this occasion, we want to take a look at the historical people and period that inspired this DLC. For us, it is a well-known history – as you know, CE Asia and Azure Flame are both Chinese-based companies; so in some way, this DLC was a nod to our culture and history from the beginning. On the other hand, for Western players the French Revolution is of common knowledge and it’s the Oriental pirates who sound exotic. So let’s take a look at the infamous Pirates of the Chinese Sea! In the West, the Golden Age of Piracy is said to end around 1730. Pirates had thrived in a certain historical context, and when these conditions changed, they became a relatively rare problem again. But piracy in the South Chinese Coast did not arise until the late 18th century – just as happened in the Caribbean seas, it took a peculiar conjunction of circumstances for it to grow until it became a social and political phenomenon. The first element to factor in this equation is the radical increase of population in the late 18th century. China was growing quite fast in those days; more people meant more mouths to feed, which prompted the annexations of new lands. Overpopulation almost always leaves some people in need, but also many farmers and fishermen were displaced and lost their lands and means of living. We’ve got the first piece of this puzzle now: some desperate people turned to piracy and other crimes to survive. The second key element comes into play: a place for these people to gather, organize and thrive. This was the city of Giang Binh, a coastal city in the border between China and Vietnam that had passed hands between both monarchies. A place that was a melting pot of Vietnamese and Chinese people, with access to the sea and strategically located, and somewhat neglected by the politicians of the era – just the ideal place for pirates to meet! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/8191ad12dd8e1d172421b28c06098ce2882435d9.jpg Now, we come to the third and final catalyst: war and conflict. Let’s be serious: pirates cannot compete with a properly organized naval force. Whenever they thrive it’s because there is a power vacuum (see the Caribbean piracy) or because some naval power sanctions and protects it (see corsairs like Francis Drake) – and usually it was because of both. A similar situation happened for the South China Coast pirates to grow. In 1771, civil war broke in Vietnam between local lords, and many Chinese pirates were hired (in both sides) to harass the enemy’s naval forces. We’re not going in detail into this war and the following conflicts between Vietnam and China – the key fact here is that this turmoil is perfect for pirates. Sometimes they just took advantage of the chaos to rob and plunder, sometimes they were even officially hired as mercenaries or corsairs. At some point, the new Vietnamese emperor decided to stop backing Chinese pirates. They were forced to flee, and started fighting each other for control of their respective turfs – until seven of their most prominent leaders met and created a pirate alliance, a massive fleet with the potential to become a serious threat to the regional powers, from Vietnam and China to the Portuguese settlers and merchants of Macau. The head of this pirate alliance was the fearsome Zheng Yi, leader of the powerful Red Flag Fleet. He died suddenly in 1807, and his widow Ching Shih inherited control of the Fleet. More than 30,000 men and several hundred vessels were under her control when she took command. Along with her second husband (and former adoptive son), she fought the British, Portuguese, Chinese and Vietnamese; at some point she controlled hundreds of islands and coastal towns with a vast fleet of more than 1,500 ships, manned by 80,000 pirate sailors. Saying that Ching Shih was a larger-than-life figure is probably understating. Her exploits and adventures are featured in hundreds of books, novels, films and games in China. She was a strong leader, a military genius and a clever politician. She could only be weakened by treason, when some pirates of her alliance switched sides and joined the Qing government. Eventually, she suffered a series of defeats against the powerful Portuguese navy. But as we said, she was also a clever politician: she negotiated a honorable surrender, was pardoned and retained control of more than 120 ships, becoming a powerful merchant (and military advisor at some point). Her husband became a government official and died at sea fighting for the Quing dinasty. This surrender marked the end of the South China Coast pirates era. All in all, she is widely considered the most successful pirate in history. And Mu Zhiyun, the eponymous Oriental Pirate of this DLC of Banner of the Maid, serves under her banner – and is sent to France in a secret mission, bringing Chin Shih’s pirate troops with her… As you can see, just as Banner of the Maid, The Oriental Pirate DLC might be fiction but it has deep roots in history. We hope you enjoyed this short review of its historical background! The Oriental Pirate DLC comes today for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, and it’s already available on Steam. Hotfix Update July 28th: V2.0.3 Update Items that was consumed in the Roster panel cannot be sold anymore. Items that provide EXP cannot be consumed in the Roster panel when the character is at max level. Fixed a bug that caused the level-up UI displayed improperly in the Roster panel when you promote a character. ---- Hotfix Update July 24th: Fixed a bug that save failed when using the "Suspend Game" button. ---- Update log on July 21th V2.0.2 Update You can now hold down LB+RB+START on your controller (or corresponding buttons on other controller) to return to the title screen immediately. Today we want to post the second part of the dev art diary we started a week ago with JiuJiangzi, lead artist of the game. Enjoy the read! * * * Hello again! Last week I showed you how Pauline’s design evolved over time; this time I want to give you some insights on the creation process of some secondary characters of the game. Let’s start with Charlotte Cornell, for example. This is her final design; when I was painting her, I paid special attention to how the different fabrics and materials of her clothes would behave. I hope you can see it in the folds and creases of her jacket, leather boots… {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/24328079a1d2988405cfd911fc71edc7769664a1.jpg This is Rose Duter, general of the French artillery regiments. For her design, we started from the uniforms of that era’s French artillery commanders, but we made some adjustments to highlight the character’s temperament and special charm. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/cc8f91f70ef5c86fcf3ce87380694b97f4bca263.jpg Having seen this, I want to show you a character that didn’t make it to the final game. When I started working in this project I wanted to create a few designs just to practice the style. This is the result – I called her just “Prussia”, as she is supposed to be Prussian, but I did not try to be really faithful to the historical Prussian uniforms and clothing at that moment. The characters I’ve shown you so far are basically dressing a direct adaptation of male uniforms, but in these, what I did was to disassemble and reorganize the key features of the real-life uniforms they are inspired by. For instance, in this case of the Grenadier, I re-imagined the swallowtail of the Grenadier’s uniform as a cloak. The cuffs and gloves were combined into long gloves, and I put the Grenadier’s bag tied to her leg instead of her waist. The leather wristbands are a reference to the leather boots of the time. The neckline sorts of keeps the design of the throat guard, and the high waist skirt is an evolution of the British military jacket. V2.0 Update You can now use consumable items that add experiences/stats in the Roster interface. Debuff duration now shows in the status list. Trophy loot progression now shows in the pause interface. Status list interfaces now have fixed size. You can now hide the dialogue interface by pressing down the right mouse button or cancel button. When you change skills and leave the panel, skill icons will automatically align to fill up the blank slots. Diagonal tiles are now considered flanks. Fixed the bug that sometimes causes ambience sound lost when loading saved data. Fixed a bug with the pixeled figure of Pauline in certain conditions. Fixed the display position of the Gallery. Fixed an UI bug when you click the page up/down buttons too fast. The effect duration of Misguide is now properly shown as 2 turns. Fixed the description of Command, Eviction, Superiority and Rise. In the DLC mission "Defense Line of the Heroes", Dutheil's starting position cannot be changed anymore. Fixed a bug that when you move to the destination via position-switching skills, the command menu isn't closed automatically. The boss in chapter 22 now has a unmovable skill. Fixed the bug in chapter 23 that causes the reinforcements appeared in turn 12 won’t move. Fixed the figure of enemy artillery boss in chapter 26. Fixed the skill description display issue when playing with controllers. Fixed some text display issues. Added the rainy sound effect to The Oriental Pirate DLC missions.

Hi revolutionnàires! One of the key features of Banner of the Maid is its art; this blend of Japanese anime visuals with a French Revolution setting is quite unmistakable, both in the pixel-art battles and the more realistic character and background artwork. We wanted to share with you some small secrets on how it was created – a “making of Banner of the Maid”, so to speak! For this purpose, we present to you today a dev diary written by one of the key artists of the game. Enjoy the read! * * * First thing I should do is introduce myself. My name is JiuJiangzi, and I am the lead artist of Banner of the Maid at Azure Studios. This was my first project as a lead, so I’ve learned quite a lot along the way! I have taken care personally of creating the ladies of the game, while the masculine characters were mostly drawn by another colleague. When we started this project, we spent a lot of time researching and studying this era, looking for a way to recreate their elegance and complexity. As I studied their clothes and styles, I fell gradually in love with this charming (if quite complex) age. On the other hand, we had to make some compromises to appeal to modern audiences without losing the unique charm of their fashion. Finding a balance was difficult, but I think we managed it! I want to share with you some of the character designs I created; we’ll focus mostly on Pauline Bonaparte, our heroine – but also a real character, although Napoleon’s sister was quite different from our Pauline, as she was more a socialité than a military leader. This was the real Pauline: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/0d61a6a61c3e4a16d065f9396922e2731b314e86.jpg Our Pauline became a military hero after a trip to Toulon to visit her troops, where she found herself in charge of some troops in the middle of a chaotic battle. Her design is the most detailed in the game, even if she is not (on purpose) the most beautiful lady of this story. When we started working in her, we drafted the character with different clothing schemes inspired by Napoleon’s early military uniform. Some of the elements of these preliminary drawings have remained, like the small bow tie and jacket. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/13d1b612cf3b29aeaf0101ca0c34d2c1e57ec2d6.jpg Once we had reached a character design we were happy with, I started drawing her in different situations to see how to reflect her personality. I thought of how she would look like when she was involved in the war for the first time and she thought it was too late to change dresses before rushing to the battlefield, and how her face could suggest heroism, wisdom, calmness… {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/ca01f0951638f612590317eadd153a5d81d3e52e.jpg Finally, I dug deeper into this character study, trying to highlight both her firm and strong beliefs and her tender manners. I also redesigned the hairstyle so it echoed the real Pauline’s curly hair while showing its own personality. We also had to create two sets of clothing, one for the battlefield and one for social settings; for the latter we went for an exquisite, but not too luxurious style, as she is supposed to be accommodated enough but not of noble birth. V1.9.8 Update You can now repeatly play the challenge missions of "A Sailor's Gossip, Part 4" and "Miss Elisa's Journal" via the Salon interface. Mission rewards won't be given again though. Now you can see the category of the item/trinket reward in mission briefings. Added a notification when you lit the 4th candlestick in Chapter 11. The English text now displays faster. Fixed the description text regarding chase-attack speed checks. Fixed an display issue of certain terrains like Artillery Sites when they're occupied.

V1.9.6 Update Fixed a bug that caused the advisor notice in A Sailor's Gossip, Chapter 4 not showing properly in English. In A Sailor's Gossip, Chapter 4, the 2nd time that any skill cast by the Mist Pirates will have their areas of effect shown when dealing damage. In A Sailor's Gossip, Chapter 4, the last whisper will be cast by the Mist Pirate in the upper area. V1.9.5 Update Added 3 new achievements: Break In, Unfinished Business, Master of Deception. If you have already completed the missions for Break In and Master of Deception, these achievements will be automatically unlocked. You can now restart Chapter 1 and 2 of A Sailor's Gossip from the Deployment interface. Added advisor hints. In A Sailor's Gossip, Chapter 1, there won't be reinforcements of either side in Turn 8. Bonjour revolutionaires! Today is a very special day for us at CE Asia and Azure Flame Studio: on a day like this a year ago, Banner of the Maid was released in China. It's been a very exciting and challenging year; this 1st anniversary of the game is a great opportunity to stop for a moment and look at the path that brought us here. The core members of Azure Flame Studio are all hardcore gamers who started our gaming life in the 1990s. We started working in the industry about 10 years ago, but after a few projects that weren't anything special or exciting to us, we felt that we would eventually burn out, losing our drive and passion for developing games. Circa early 2017, we sat together and discussed what each of us really, really wanted to do. Turned out, we all wanted to make a game that would bring us back to the good old times of the SNES Era. We didn't want a sword and sorcery setting, though -- that was just too common, well-trodden territory. On the other hand, we didn't want it to be too sci-fi, because we felt that it didn't fit the nostalgia theme. So we started looking for some setting that would allow us to mix cavalry, firearms, fancy uniforms, a rich historical period with lots to build upon, but on the other hand, that would allow us to add fantasy elements. We suddenly realized the French Revolution was a perfect stage for all this and, to our surprise, a setting that has not been visited too many times in games before. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/5d2ebda4f99250934d1c7a992b3fbe69b71da6ed.jpg Hard at work at the office Once the background settings were decided, the storyline and quests were relatively easier to come up with. It was basically done by Borris Hou, our chief designer/lead writer. From there, the development process went quite smoothly: even though it was our first time as an indie team developing a single-player game, we had enough experience as developers under our belt to tackle this challenge. Actually, the most pressing challenge we faced was not about development, but more at the business side of things: as many indie devs out there, we were always short of budget and had to find ways to make ends meet all the time. Because of that, there was some content that we wanted to implement in the game that in the end had to be scrapped. For instance, there was a deck-building, sword-fencing minigame planned, and its game mechanics were already completed, but we had to abandon it. The game grew in our hearts during this time, and it actually changed here and there because of that. For instance, the possibility of saving certain character's life was a last-minute addition to the game: at some point, a big part of the team "revolted" because they didn't want him to die, so we decided to add a way to save him just one week before release! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/cd6356cc8be4ec69c79afb5ddd3d0237f533360c.jpg First key art of the game After lots of hard work, we finally released the original Chinese version of the game. It was a great success, something for which we are incredibly grateful; so we decided to release the game too in the West. Unfortunately, the game is massive in terms of text, so outsourcing its localization was out of our means... which of course did not stop us! We decided to tackle the English localization all by ourselves. It took us a great deal of time and effort, but finally, with the kind help of an editor, Christan Michael Voss (who happened to have enough free time and liked our game), we managed to complete the English version. The Westen release was not as successful as the Chinese one, but it was successful nevertheless. We read all the comments and reviews on the Steam page and the posts on the community board, and we're happy that the majority of players are satisfied and felt our love for the genre – that's why we started the project in the first place! And now... what? First of all, it's not exactly a secret that Banner of the Maid will eventually arrive to consoles. We cannot talk more about that at the moment, but we recommend you stay tuned to our social media and CE Asia's for more details about this in the near future. But that's not all -- we're also designing "Banner of the Maid: The Italian Campaign"... which is not a video game but a complete and standalone board game! We are working hard to make sure that it meets your expectations and becomes the great game our community deserves. V1.9 Update The Oriental Pirate DLC: Added “A Sailor’s Gossip” quest line to the DLC, which will be unlocked after Chapter 18. The quest line includes 4 missions that will be gradually unlocked with your main campaign progress. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/8964ae55fa8ea494e33d34a825b2620bb8b9a700.jpg  You’ll be able to find the special MUSYNC cross-over event item in Free Combat: Offensive missions. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34696828/4486874e0ccdf2905366d9a815523d863107b70b.png  You can now switch to Story Mode from Officer Mode in the Options menu.  When you are already in Heroic status, now you can use skills that consume Morale even when you don’t have enough Morale. In this case, the Heroic status will work as 100 Morale.  The defeat conditions of Chapter 3, 5, 8 and 18 are changed. Existing saves during these combats must be restarted to take effect.  skill adjustment: Intelligence Gathering now provides Attack +1. Dine now lasts 3 turns. Tolerance now takes 9 damage at maximum. Projectile Calculation now lasts 2 turns. Terrain Advantage now provides Hit Chance +25. Round Shot Supplement now also increases movement.  When Mu Zhiyun joined your army, a default weapon will now be added to your inventory.  Exiting the trade interface won’t play NPC voices anymore.  You won’t be able to deploy Mu Zhiyun when the DLC is not successfully loaded.  Fixed the display error of Heroic Attacks when using weapons like Golden-stripe Sidearm.  Fixed some voice errors in dialogues.  Fixed some flickering image issues in certain dialogues.  Fixed a controller issue in the character status interface.  Fixed the sound effect of fires in some missions.

The game is updated to v1.8.3

• Fixed a bug that may cause the buff cards selection appears on Turn 2 in certain missions in the Story Mode. (It should always appear on Turn 1)

• Fixed a bug that may sometimes cause the rolling credits to freeze.

• Fixed a bug that may cause errors in the New Game+ mode while Mu Zhiyun is in your army.

• Fixed some voice casting errors.

Also, we want to take this chance to let you know that we'll be adding a high-difficulty challenge mission "A Sailor's Tale" to The Oriental Pirate DLC recently. (It should be coming along with the DLC, but we didn't finish it in time because of the coronavirus thing.) The English localization is immediately available as a free major update: if you already own the game, it will update automatically; if you purchase it now, it will be already in English. But that's not all, we've got a surprise for you: The Oriental Pirate, the second DLC (and the first paid DLC) of Banner of the Maid that also releases today, is already localized to English. You won't have to wait to have Mu Zhiyun the Piratess leading her Oriental Pirates to battle! We want to thank our community for their help beta-testing the localization. New DLC - The Oriental Pirate:

Adds a new playable character, Mu Zhiyun, and a new unit, the oriental pirates, to your roster. The pirates can use both musket and blade in battles. The pirates can loot extra treasures (collector's items & special weapons) from certain enemies with their Heroic Attacks. Purchase the DLC and check out the new quest "The Oriental Pirate" in the salon. Complete the quest to unlock Mu Zhiyun and her pirates.

Story Mode:

Added a new, easier mode for players who focus on the story rather than the combat. In the Story Mode, you start the game with more resources and start each mission with a boost effect.

Miscellaneous:

Added emotional voices to dialogues and city interfaces. Added subtitles for in-combat voices. Added dialogues for side quest: "The Merchant, the Drunk and the Food", "A Defeated Opponent", "Journal of the Nameless" and "Enemy of the People". Added achievements for completing the main campaign in Officer and General modes. You'll automatically receive these achievements if you have a saved data with the main campaign completed. Added a language selection interface for first-time players. You can change the language setting later in the Options menu. Added an entrance for the Credits interface. The advantage and disadvantage chart is now shown when you deploy units. Some enemy reinforcements that appear during the Enemy Phase will not take action immediately. Fixed Paulette's in-combat voices. When the saved data is broken due to accidental termination of the game, you can still read the unbroken saves.
