Today is a very special day for us.

Backrooms: Realm of Shadows is officially 3 years old.

Three years ago, we released the first version of this project without knowing where the journey would lead. Since then, the game has grown far beyond what we originally imagined.

Over the past three years, we've spent countless hours creating new levels, expanding the story, improving performance, fixing bugs, introducing seasonal events, and continuing to build the game with every update.

Every update has been driven by one goal: making Backrooms: Realm of Shadows the best experience it can be.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported the game throughout these three years.

Your support, feedback, bug reports, screenshots, videos, and kind words have helped shape this project into what it is today.

Added a new Sub-Layer level, accessible through the Electrical Station

Added a brand-new Sub-Layer featuring tight corridors, distorted lighting, and environmental storytelling accessible through Level 0

Winter Nights Event

Winter Nights Event is now live! Explore the Backrooms transformed by a cold, eerie atmosphere.
A brand-new Winter Lobby is available for the duration of the event.
Added Winter Lobby Menu Music designed specifically for this season.
Winter Crystals (Winter Energy) now spawn in Level 0 and the Icy Rooms.
Collect 65 Winter Crystals to unlock a Secret Ending, redeemable in the Event Dashboard.

Engine & Performance

Added Shader Compiling before game launch to reduce stuttering and improve overall performance.
Improved engine stability and reduced memory spikes.
Enhanced lighting optimization and reflection handling.
Faster load transitions between certain rooms and levels.

Bug Fixes

Fixed entity audio occasionally stopping after transitioning between rooms.
Fixed flickering light sources in Level 0 on lower graphics presets.
Fixed collision issues and floating geometry in Icy Rooms.
Fixed delayed footstep audio on certain surfaces.

From Private Test Build to Live

Before releasing Winter Nights publicly, the event went through a limited Private Test Build phase with our Game Tester community. Thanks to their reports and feedback, several improvements and refinements have been made before going live:

Improved Winter Crystal spawn locations to prevent edge-cases where they spawned too close to walls.
Adjusted ambience and lighting in the Winter Lobby based on tester feedback for better mood and performance.
Fixed additional Icy Room collisions discovered during the test phase.
Refined Winter Lobby menu music transitions to prevent audio clipping.
Improved clarity of energy tracking inside the Event Dashboard.
Fixed several minor UI issues that testers spotted during event preview.
Additional optimizations and balance tweaks informed by tester gameplay sessions.
Decreased the Number of Winter Crystals that spawn in Level 0
Decreased the required Amount of Winter Crystals to 65 (was 100)

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the testing phase! Your help ensured a smoother and more polished launch for all players.

Known Issues

Shader compiling may still take longer during the first startup (normal behavior).
Fatal Error may occure when loading new Levels (still under investigation)

Return to the Shadows – Version 1.0 Now Available!

Greetings Wanderers of the Backrooms,

Today, we’re opening a special door into the past, a door that leads back to where it all began.

We’re thrilled to announce that Version 1.0 of Backrooms: Realm of Shadows is now officially playable for all Steam users! This feature has been highly requested by long-time players, speedrunners, and lore hunters who wanted to revisit the earliest iteration of the game.

What's Different in Version 1.0?

Version 1.0 represents the very first public release of the game. It’s raw, unpolished, and eerie in ways the current version no longer is, and that’s part of its charm.

Here’s what makes it unique:

The Original Movement System Before we refined and rebuilt the player controller, movement in Version 1.0 had its own pace, quirks, and flow. It’s back exactly as it was.
Classic Level Design You’ll find early versions of levels that have since been redesigned or removed. Expect a more surreal, unpredictable atmosphere, complete with old lighting setups, asset placements, and layouts that were later overhauled.
The Original Note System Before narrative integration was more seamless, notes played a bigger role in storytelling. The old system is back in its original form.
Legacy Systems Restored Version 1.0 includes systems and mechanics that no longer exist in the modern game, some experimental, some chaotic, and all part of the game's early DNA.

Important Notes & Recommendations

While we’re excited to offer this nostalgic option, there are a few important caveats to keep in mind:

The Eternal Shadow DLC is NOT compatible with Version 1.0. You’ll need to return to the latest build to experience any content from the DLC.
Bugs and Balancing Issues Version 1.0 is exactly as it was on release. This means you may encounter old bugs, balance problems, or features that no longer behave as expected. We’ve made no changes to preserve its authenticity.
Recommended for Experienced Players Only If you’re new to the game, we strongly recommend starting with the current version for a more polished, stable, and balanced experience. Version 1.0 is best enjoyed by those who’ve already completed the game and want a deeper look at its history.
Steam-Only Feature This feature is only available on the Steam version of the game. Unfortunately, it is not supported on the Epic Games Store at this time.

How to Access Version 1.0 on Steam

To switch to Version 1.0:

Right-click on Backrooms: Realm of Shadows in your Steam library.

Select Properties.

Go to the Betas tab.

Choose version1.0 from the dropdown list.

Close the window and allow Steam to update the game.

You can switch back to the latest version at any time using the same method.

We know many of you have a deep connection to this game, some of you were here since the very first build, reporting bugs, exploring hidden corners, and sharing your theories. This release is for you.

Version 3.0 - What to expect

Hello Everyone, Its time for a new Dev Blog. This Time we will talk about everything thats coming with the next Patch. The Next Patch is going to be a big one. Version 3.0 will feature new Level Changes aswell as the DLC. Lets talk about the DLC First.

BACKROOMS: ETERNAL SHADOWS - WHAT TO EXPECT

Journey back into the Backrooms and try to find the Exit this Time. The DLC will feature new Levels, aswell as old ones that are making their way back. The DLC will wrap up the Backrooms Story for our Game. So before playing the DLC we are highly recommending Playing the Normal Story first. Also here is an Important Announcement: The DLC: Backrooms Eternal Shadows will be available for Free! LEVEL CHANGES

THE END

In Level The End we are changing one Thing that got reported to us serveral Times. After this Patch, you no longer need to go to the Computer to put in the PIN. Now you need to go to the Keypad and enter the PIN there. This will fix several Bugs in this Level.

LEVEL 188

Also here, we only removed one Thing from the Level to make it better. After this Patch, you no longer need to "put" the Numbers to open the first Door. The First Door is now Automatically open. For the Second Door you still need to find the Key.

OTHER LEVEL CHANGES

We removed all Notes from the Levels as these are no longer required. Also the Notes where not compatible with Gamepad so we deceided to remove the Notes from our Game.

SAVE GAME CHANGES

We got several reports that Players are getting teleported back to the Main Menu after hitting "Start Game". This only happens if you didnt set a Level from the Drop Down Menu. To make it easier for the Players to start and Load a Game we are introducing a new Save Game Function. After this Patch you can Start a New Game that will override your current Save or you can Load the Game from the Save you already have and continue Playing. This is everything we have for you Today. We are happy to announce that this Patch including the DLC will release late March! Stay Tuned for more Infos!

Transition from Free to Paid

Your dedication has allowed us to create an experience that we are incredibly proud of. Today, we would like to share some important news regarding the future of the game. After careful consideration and evaluation of various factors, we have decided to transition The Backrooms: Realm of Shadows from a free-to-play model to a paid one. To make this Transition possible we have added a New DLC called "Full Version". This means without the DLC you can only Play Level 0 and Level 1 and then you need to buy the DLC. If you bought the Game before we made it Free, you can contact us via Email with a proof of Purchase and you will get a Key for the DLC. We understand that this shift may raise questions, and we want to provide you with a transparent explanation of the reasons behind this decision.

Quality Enhancement

Moving to a paid model enables us to allocate additional resources to enhance the overall quality of the game. This includes investing in advanced graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, and an even more immersive experience. Hello Everyone! As promised we will do a last Dev Post for this Year where we talk about our upcoming DLC and our Plans for The Backrooms: Realm of Shadows for 2024. Before we start with this we want to thank every Player for supporting us over the Year. Without you the Game wouldnt be there where it is now. We have many Plans for 2024 so stay Tuned!

DLC STORY EXTENSION

Like we mentioned in other Posts, in the Main Story you end up in the Backrooms again...but this Time something changed. While it looks like the Normal Level 0, some Exits have been moved and more Levels have been added. Embark on a chilling new journey in the DLC extension for "Backrooms: Realm of Shadows." As the unsettling mysteries of the Backrooms continue to unravel, a dark force emerges from the depths, threatening to plunge the realm into eternal darkness. CONSOLE RELEASE

The Console Release is something very Important for us. We want that all Players on the World can enjoy the Game. The Console Release is currently target for: Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Right now we dont have an Deadline but it will happen sometime Next Year. We will get back once we have more Informations on that.

LEVEL REWORKS

Some Levels in the Backrooms feels....well they feel weird. Some Levels already got their Rework but we have more on the List. Reworks:

LOCALISATION

We want to add more Languages to the Game so it can be more enjoyable for Players who dont speak English. Right now we dont have any Deadline or ETA on when this Feature will release, but it is on our List and we will get back with that once we have more Informations. Hello Everyone! Welcome back to an Dev Blog. In Todays Dev Blog, we are going to discuss what next Plans we have for the Game. In an previous Post we said that there is not much Content Planed for the Game, but well our Minds have changed!

MAIN MENU + LOBBY CHANGE

In the Patch after Halloween, we are changed how to Lobby for the Story Mode works. Also, we are going to change the Main Menu a little bit. The Lobby will be removed and the "Game Options" Widget where you can change everything like Starting Level or Difficulty will be added directly to the "Story Mode" Widget. This should make it easier for New Players to understand how to start the Story Mode. The Main Menu will be changed the following Way: Everytime the Player will be spawned to the Main Menu, you will be prompted to click anywhere to continue. Once clicked, the Main Widget will appear as well as the Menu Background. With this Update, we are adding 2 new Menu Backgrounds with more to come!

ELECTRICAL STATION

In the Electrical Station, there is one Part where you can fall off the Map and have to Respawn. Yep this Part is getting Removed with the Update after Halloween. We have seen quite a few Gameplays where players thought they have to do anything in there. So we have deceided to remove this Area so New Players will easily understand they have to go back.

LIGHTS OUT BALANCE CHANGES

With this Patch, we are also going to change some things in the Level: Lights Out. First we want to lower the Monster Run Speed in this Level for all Difficultys. Also, the Monster will spawn somewhere else so that new Players can have a better experience facing this Level.

TAPE COLLECTED CHANGES

Well the Only thing we are going to change/add in the Tape Collected Gamemode is a Tutorial Screen so new Players know what to do in this Gamemode. With this Update, we are also going to remove the Tooltips on the Bottom.

LOADING TIME IMPROVEMENT

Also, with this Patch we are going to Improve the Loading Time it takes to load into the Start Level. Players have reported this Issue several Times and with this Patch this Bug is finally fixed! After this Patch, once the Loading Screen starts, it should only take around 5 seconds and you are loaded into the Level! The Changes listed above will Release after Halloween. An exact Release Date will be announced soon. Also here is something we are announcing Today that is coming in the near Future:

DLC STORY

Today we are Happy to Announce that in the near Future an DLC will become Available where Players can continuing exploring the Backrooms. In the Main Story end you endup again in the Backrooms...But this Time something changed...Some new Levels are making their Way into the Game aswell as new Entities. Also some Old Levels are going to be back. Stay Tuned for more Infos! This is everything we have for Today.
