A New Chapter Begins for Atomega
We are excited to announce that we are launching a new program of updates to Atomega – starting today!
Nine years on from the original release, we are returning to the arena, and we have a lot of ideas we are excited to bring to the Atomega community. We have been inspired by everyone who has kept playing, commenting, and sharing Atomega content, so we think that it is time to reopen the Atomega story – and we want to bring players along to help shape the next chapter.
Starting today, we'll be releasing a series of content updates designed to expand, refine, and breathe new life into the experience. Whether you're a longtime veteran or someone who's been thinking about jumping back in, there's never been a better time to revisit the game.
What You Can Expect
Rather than delivering everything at once, we'll be rolling out updates over the coming months, the first of which is live in game right now and includes a new form, new UI, and multiple QoL improvements - you can view the full patch notes at the bottom of this article. Future updates will include:
New content and gameplay additions
Quality-of-life improvements
Balance adjustments and bug fixes
Community-requested features and enhancements
Additional surprises along the way
Some content has already been fleshed out, but many of these future updates will be based on player feedback.
Built With the Community
Rich Alexander, who was the Producer on the original game team, says:
“The team will be working fast, making changes quickly, experimenting and iterating. We might get some things wrong, but that’s exciting! We have lots of ideas based on almost 10 years of player feedback, but we think this is just the starting point for building the future of Atomega with players. We’ll be on the message boards and forums and really want to hear from you. Whether you first played the game back in 2017 or are an Atomega newcomer – we’re keen to work with you to test out new ideas and evolve what the game can become.”
If there's something you'd love to see improved or added, you can let us know by joining the Official Atomega Discord
We will be keeping a close eye on the conversation there as well as on Steam, and your input will play a key role in this update cycle.
PATCH NOTES
Unity Engine Upgrade
We upgraded the game to the latest 2026 version of Unity.
This allows us to take advantage of a decade of engine improvements. We have benefited from a huge range of quality-of-life enhancements, stability fixes, and performance optimizations. As a result, the game is more robust, more efficient, and provides a stronger foundation for future development.
The engine upgrade also enables us to move to Unity's modern rendering pipeline. This unlocks far more advanced lighting, shader, and material capabilities, giving our artists a much richer toolset to work with.
We've also modernized our audio technology. The new audio systems allow us to create a richer and more immersive soundscape, delivering a more engaging experience for players.
Updates to the Arenas
With the update to the latest version of Unity, we have taken the chance to update all the Arenas in the game. Each has had a fresh lighting and materials pass and an injection of a little extra space drama. The changes seek to enhance the overall look and feel and address some of the readability feedback from the original classic Arenas.
UI Updates.
We have updated the HUD to be a cleaner experience and to make the vital information like Health and Mass easier to look at a glance. We've also simplified the reticle to help targeting and reduce noise when switching between forms. Other minor updates include new tutorials and menu layouts. These changes will allow us to iterate and improve systems much more easily as we continue to grow and improve Atomega.
New Form: Dragonfly
Dragonfly is a new flying Form that introduces vertical gameplay and aerial combat to Atomega. With rapid ascent and descent, helicopter-inspired controls, and access to abilities like Stomp, players can navigate the battlefield from new angles, launch surprise attacks, and engage enemies from the air. The addition of a flying Form creates new threats across the map and expands both gameplay and progression possibilities.
New Power-Up Feature: Mass Swap
Mass Swap allows players to convert unwanted Power-Ups into Mass, adding a new layer of strategy to progression. Players can choose to use a Power-Up, save it for later, or consume it for an instant Mass boost. Unused Power-Ups grant their full Mass value, while partially used Power-Ups provide Mass based on their remaining value. This ensures every Power-Up remains useful while giving players more control over their growth and playstyle.
General Balance Updates
We've made a number of balance changes to support the introduction of Dragonfly and Mass Swap. Evolution requirements have been rebalanced to maintain a consistent pace of progression, while Form damage values have been adjusted to better reflect each Form's role and position in the evolution chain. Health regeneration has also been tuned to improve survivability and create fairer engagement opportunities.
Controller Updates
We've taken the first steps towards improving the controller experience, with initial aiming and targeting enhancements designed to bring controller performance closer to mouse and keyboard. This is the beginning of an ongoing effort that will continue in future updates.
