Apanana 1.1 is here, and this is the biggest update to the game so far.
· New diagonal directions unlocked after completing adjacent normal directions
· 4 new minigames
· Fishing has been added
· Familiars can now join you and give buffs
· 2 new constellations
· Updated constellation sky
· 80 new trinkets
· New skins
· New achievements
· 3 save slots
· New stat: Minigame Special Chance
· Smaller updates to skills, trinkets, skins, butterflies, fireflies and minigames
· Resetting is not required, and you can now start fresh in a separate save slot
After completing Level 25 in both adjacent normal directions, you can now unlock new diagonal directions.
These new directions continue the adventure path after North, East, South and West. Each one has its own theme, visuals, trinkets, skin and minigame.
There are four new minigames to discover:
· Jumping Jitters
· Dragonfly Drift
· Termite Trouble
· Rhino Rumble
These new minigames work like the others: getting better medals cuts down adventure time, and scoring beyond Gold can cut even more.
Fishing has been added to Apanana!
You can now catch fish between adventures, as long as you have bait. Bait is gained over time through a bait timer, but there are several ways to speed that timer up. Trinkets, skills and even clicking the monkey can help reduce the time until your next bait.
Fishing is meant to be a cozy collection system, but it also connects to progression. There are fish to collect, fishing levels to gain, and a collection book to fill out.
Familiars are new little companions that can join you during the game.
They are unlocked in different ways, and once they join you, they give helpful buffs. Some are tied to adventure progress, some to fishing, and some may appear after your minigame efforts.
Familiars also have their own progress, and their buffs can grow stronger as you spend more time with them.
The constellation sky has been updated and made more beautiful.
There are also two new constellations, with new skills connected to the new systems in this update. I will not spoil too much here, because figuring out the constellations is part of the fun.
Some older skills have also been adjusted to better fit the new update.
A new stat has been added: Minigame Special Chance.
Some players felt that certain minigames could be a little slow. This new stat increases the chance for special 3-point objects to appear in minigames.
Since minigame difficulty and rewards scale with points, gaining Minigame Special Chance from skills and trinkets can make minigames speed up faster and feel more rewarding.
There are 80 new trinkets in total.
Each new diagonal direction has 16 new trinkets, and each normal direction has 4 new trinkets added as well.
There are also new skins connected to the new diagonal directions.
New achievements have been added for several of the new systems in this update.
Some are tied to adventure progress, some to fishing, some to familiars, and some to other parts of the game. So whether you are starting fresh or continuing an old save, there should be new things to chase.
A small note about Steam achievements: because Steam currently has a limit on how many achievements can be added, some older Steam achievements have been removed from the Steam version of the achievement list to make room for the new ones.
These achievements are still part of the in-game achievement system, but not all of them can exist as Steam achievements right now.
Apanana now has 3 save slots.
Your old save should appear in Save Slot 1, and you can use the other slots to start fresh without deleting your original progress.
Existing saves should still work, but I do recommend starting fresh if you want the full experience. A lot has been added to the progression, and some of the new systems are best experienced from the beginning.
This update also includes smaller changes to older skills, trinkets, skins, butterflies, fireflies and minigames. Most of these changes were made to better support the new systems and make the game feel smoother as a whole.
This update took a long time, and it grew much bigger than I first expected.
Thank you to everyone who has played, left feedback, reported bugs, suggested ideas, or just clicked the monkey for an unreasonable amount of time.
I hope you enjoy Apanana 1.1.
Love, Martin
Who knew the tutorial could end up feeling like the final boss. That is how the last month has been for me. But now we have it, a tutorial for new players to feel welcome and introduced to the game! It’s short, but gives new players a clearer introduction to the core game loop, which was something a lot of feedback pointed out.
Existing players probably won’t see the tutorial unless they reset their save, but they will notice a cleaner UI update. You can enjoy a new, clearer, way of eating bananas with a yellow button that feels amazing to press! As well as the tabs on the menu and adventure timer being clearer.
Not the biggest update, but definitely one the game needed.
If this update goes well, I'll keep working on a major content update. I don't want to spoil anything, but I have a lot planned.
Love,
Martin
