Faster armor regen for all variants (fastest on 'L')
Stronger barrel rolls on the 'Falcon'
+10 Armor and faster 30mm on the 'Eagle'

The goal with these changes is to make some of the least used setups a bit more competitive in comparison to the 'Hawk with missiles' setup. The 'Falcon' now gets to be the one with the most effective barrel rolls while the 'Eagle' gets a bit more armor plus the best 30mm performance.

• Fixed cargo score exploits

No more score/extra time when damaging a cargo engine. Destroying a cargo now gets you 1500 points + 30 sec of extra time. Thanks to Hijongpark for pointing out the exploit.

Slower steering but now they can fire at you from behind.

Dev Update

In case you're wondering due to the lack of recent updates, I'm working on a sequel and hopefully I will be able to show something soon enough. So far it features an improved flight model (with full throttle control), a 2 weapon system (guns + missiles) and no health/ammo regen (at the moment you have to pick it up or clear a wave but its not final). The rest of the design is a bit up in the air at the moment, including an upgrade system between waves/missions and ally units. • Added 'Endless' game mode

Endless waves, no checkpoints, random seed for each new run and a dedicated leaderboard. And the wave size is dynamic, depending on your skill (will probably need some tweaking later).

• Distant enemies will respawn

Now you can go in any direction as much as you want. I'm not 100% sure this is appropriate for campaign mode but I think it makes the game more fun, thoughts?

This one is for stick users. Set it to 'Roll & Pull' if you prefer classic flight-sim controls. Beware though, there's no separate yaw control.

Do you want the widescreen experience but don't have a 21:9 monitor? I've got you, set it to 'Cinematic'.

Added a few more color options and finally the HUD text changes as well.

• Removed 'Overdue' fail state

I don't make this change lightly, it is one of those things that can change the feel of the game. Anyway, it's all the same until you run out of time, after that the mission will continue but you will not be getting any extra seconds on kill and the dangerous flying bonus stops working. Nothing changes for veteran players and new ones (and those who want a more relaxed experience) will not get punished too much. Fair?

• Less grind for weapon unlocks

Self explanatory, mostly applies to new players.

• 30mm bullets are a bit faster

30mm challenge anyone?

Mostly applies to first-time players: added a few words, made the 'master barrel roll' achievement a bit easier to obtain and the aircraft config is not saved anymore if it is locked and you quit the game.

I need your help. Do you have 5 min to review the tags applied to the game and perhaps boost some of the more relevant ones like 'flight' ? Afterburn is releasing out of early access very soon and that can help a lot with the visibility of the game. UPDATE: this 👇 has been reverted back in v0.99. About v0.85, it is mostly a maintenance update but I wanted to try and merge the 'Last Campaign' board with 'Ranking': I'm not 100% sure about this but I dont think many of us care about seeing the last campaign details in full, so I've put only the last campaign position and score under the 'Ranking' table, which is a bit more interesting. What do you think? Changelog below:

First of all, I'm thinking about doing a reset of the stats / achievements on release: yay or nay? Please let me know.

• Ranking Leaderboard

You can find it after the 'last campaign' board, in the hangar. It will update on each new day and will show the average score between the last 2 days and the total stats at that moment (missions, hours, kills). The 'current / last campaign' boards, under the player name, will now show the daily stats.

• Added 'Top Dog' achievement

To get it, you just need to be first on the daily leaderboard at any time during the day, as long as there are at least 2 players. Which is nowhere as difficult to get as the 'Furious' achievement in Furious Angels 🤭

• Aircraft setup saved from last session

It's nice to start the game with the last setup ready, isn't it?

Wrapping Up

We're almost there, I think the game is mature enough for release. There's room for more updates after release but how many and often depends on how well the game will perform. So, if you like the game please tell your friends! It will help greatly. I'm expecting a couple more updates before v1.0 for last minute tweaks. I've refactored a lot of the code that deals with the leaderboards and there could be some bug lurking in. • Radars fire missiles from mission 4

Added some thrills to the last 3 missions.

• Gameplay tweaking

You'll have to destroy 3 engines to bring down a Cargo now. Total health doesnt change, so each engine now takes a bit less to damage (4 Hawk missiles, 7 Falcon rockets or 10 Eagle rockets). Plus, no more 'Dangerous Flying' points for dead Cargos and Radars.

• Polishing

Added a sound cue when hitting enemies, subtle but very satisfying if you ask me. You can now click on the leaderboards to open a user page (to send a friend request, etc.). Finally, added 'Anticipate' option to the 'Camera Lag' setting, check it out.

• Added the 'Eagle'

A bit of mashup between an F-15 and a Su-57. Movement wise, it is the most balanced plane. It also gets the 30mm cannon as default weapon. You'll have to grind some kills to unlock the 30mm on the other planes.

• Complete aircraft customization

With this update, aircraft selection/customization is finally complete with 3 planes, 3 variants and 3 weapons types for each (turret, missile-like, fixed cannon). There is still some room for tweaking in the upcoming updates, depending on your feedback.

• No more collisions with enemy jets (again)

I've got the memo: random collisions out of nowere, even if rare, are annoying.

• General tweaking

Mostly worked on the Falcon and Hawk stats to make sure each plane covers its specific movement niche. Also added some more infos on the UI and other little things here and there.

• Better Target Locking

Cargo mines and out of range targets gets a lower priority and should not interfere too much now.

• Added 'out of range' HUD indicator

Took a while but there you go.

• Gameplay tweaking

The radar takes 4 missiles to destroy (it was 5) and enemies crashing give you half their normal score, no more free lunches.

• More optimizations and bugfixing

Finished the optimization round started with v0.80c.

• Terrain overhaul

All new, 3 different terrain types with 3 'time of day' variations (which can be customized in the options). The terrain is done.

• Last mission split in two parts

We're back to 6 missions total with a single epic wave for the last one. There will be no more changes to the campaign structure, only tweaking and adding new enemy types.

• Aircraft variants tweaking and removed the 'X'

The default variant is now called 'A' and has a 15% decrease in mobility (the price to pay for extra armor). Mobility bonus for the 'L' bumped from 20% to 25% (but with less armor). 'S' stays the same and is now the most balanced variant. The 'X' was redundant and the cost for it (dead with 1 valkyrie shot) was too high.

• Added 'Time of day' and 'Camera lag' options

If you feel the controls are "too floaty" then you should probably set the camera lag to 'Fast'.

• Improved and more diverse enemy spawn

Spawn patterns for Falcons and Valkyries should be a bit more interesting now.

• No more endless last mission

So, we've been trying the endless mode for a bit now but I think Afterburn is more fun when there is a score ceiling. For most of us it wont change much, I've noticed that most people dont go beyond the 3rd-4th wave of the last mission anyway. What do you think?

Whats next?

I've been working on better terrains and its time to add a new enemy type.

Quick update to tweak a few things.

• Extra-time tweaking

Back to how it was a bunch of versions ago: 15 sec for cargo / radar, 10 sec for valkyries, 5 sec for falcons. In endless the values drop after each wave to a minimum of 20%.

• No more crashing with enemy jets

I guess a few of you will like this one.

• Added 'Target Lock' option

Set how fast it takes to change target.

Waves and mission changes

We are down to 5 missions total, with waves and they should ramp a bit better than before. The last mission has endless waves but extra time on kill is down to 5 seconds: beware this is just the first iteration, I'm sure it will need a lot of tweaking.

Aircraft variants

Skins, which are now called 'variants', are a bit more clear-cut and armor values are not as punishing as before except for the new 'X' variant. Some of you were expecting a variant that gives extra time in exchange for some handicap, I tried it but it did not feel right. The new 'X' is more in line with the vision of the game. The big change, aircraft customization

I know, not a lot of options so far but I think this is the right direction: not many aircrafts but each with distinct mobility and customization options in the form of skins and weapons. At the moment the 'Falcon' focuses on guns, the 'Hawk' on missiles/rockets and the upcoming one, the 'Eagle', will probably have all kinds of weapons. But I think it would be also nice to give some guns to the 'Hawk' and some missiles to the 'Falcon' via achievements. I hope that will be a welcome change. Fixed game-breaking bug: the game could freeze on the mission recap screen.
Testing new scoring.
Valkyries nerfed a bit.

So, what is this new scoring about?

Accuracy is no longer a major factor but it is added as a bonus at the end, along with the time bonus. Not sure how this will play out but usually simpler things works best. Lets try this. Target locking improved: less jumping around.
General gameplay tweaking.
Falcon-C tweaking: easier aiming but less extra time on kill.
Some polishing here and there.

It's not the content patch I was planning for but I'd like to tackle some of the balancing issues we've been discussing on the forums lately. So, each player aircraft has its own 'extra time on kill' now: the Falcon has the most (13 sec), the Falcon-C the least (7 sec) and the Falcon-M stays at 10 sec. Plus, you get the 'time bonus' on any mission outcome, not only on completion. There's also a better steam input default config, if you are using it you might have to re-apply it. Missions tweaking: 6 missions total, adjusted a bit the difficulty curve and added a couple more enemy spawns.
Fixed AI aiming + more effective barrel rolls: now the AI uses the fixed aim prediction of v0.71 and so I had to make barrel rolls more effective (Falcon-C has the best improvement in that regard).
Improved Falcon-M missiles.
Added controls options: if the mouse controls seem too different try "cursor curve: linear". Also for controllers there is a "stick accel" option, off by default, you might want to try it with the Falcon-C.
Added HUD color option.

Quick thought about missions: with only 4 enemy types things become a bit stale after 4 missions. Adding these new enemy spawns helps but I think its time to add a few more enemy types, to make things more fresh for later missions. So, unless there's something broken with this update that needs fixing I'm thinking about taking 2-3 weeks for the next update to work on new enemies and perhaps adding a new aircraft. Sounds good?
